In the original article the author refers to to 5 traits of Trump Supporters, but since these were Republican traits long before Fred stood up from the toilet and fished out the future Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, I extended the concept.  Please read the source article in its entirety.

The lightning-fast ascent and political invincibility of Donald Trump has left many experts baffled and wondering, “How did we get here?” Any accurate and sufficient answer to that question must not only focus on Trump himself, but also on his uniquely loyal supporters. Given their extreme devotion and unwavering admiration for their highly unpredictable and often inflammatory leader, some have turned to the field of psychology for scientific explanations based on precise quantitative data and established theoretical frameworks.

Although analyses and studies by psychologists and neuroscientists have provided many thought-provoking explanations for his enduring support, the accounts of different experts often vary greatly, sometimes overlapping and other times conflicting. However insightful these critiques may be, it is apparent that more research and examination is needed to hone in on the exact psychological and social factors underlying this peculiar human behavior.

In a review paper published in the Journal of Social and Political Psychology, Psychologist and UC Santa Cruz professor Thomas Pettigrew argues that five major psychological phenomena can help explain this exceptional political event.

1.     Authoritarian Personality Syndrome

Authoritarianism refers to the advocacy or enforcement of strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom, and is commonly associated with a lack of concern for the opinions or needs of others. Authoritarian personality syndrome—a well-studied and globally-prevalent condition—is a state of mind that is characterized by belief in total and complete obedience to one’s authority. Those with the syndrome often display aggression toward outgroup members, submissiveness to authority, resistance to new experiences, and a rigid hierarchical view of society. The syndrome is often triggered by fear, making it easy for leaders who exaggerate threat or fear monger to gain their allegiance.

Although authoritarian personality is found among liberals, it is more common among the right-wing around the world. President Trump’s speeches, which are laced with absolutist terms like “losers” and “complete disasters,” are naturally appealing to those with the syndrome.

While research showed that Republican voters in the U.S. scored higher than Democrats on measures of authoritarianism before Trump emerged on the political scene, a 2016 Politico survey found that high authoritarians greatly favored then-candidate Trump, which led to a correct prediction that he would win the election, despite the polls saying otherwise…

It’s another busy day here in the CatBox, as I prepare for tomorrow’s needle biopsy.  I will be leaving at 7:00, and I won’t be home until supper time, so I will be posting only a brief Personal Update, prepared the night before, except for my puzzle times.  If you play Fantasy Football in our league, I will be at least a day late in posting the results, so please visit the League to see who you will be playing this weekend and prepare your lineup.  Oh God, It’s Monday!

From Crooks and Liars: The reason Republicans are allowed to do things like obstruct Supreme Court justice appointments and ignore all of the evidence in an impeachment trial is pretty easy to see when you watch this interview on ABC’s This Week where George Stephanopoulis steps off the reality train into Obstruction Desert, where one side is solely responsible for the other side’s unconstitutional, unethical, fantasy-based, cult embrace of Dear Leader.

In this interview it is the job of the Democrats to teach pigs to dance bring Republicans to a place where they can set aside their decision to put their party over their country and instead weigh the evidence and convict Trump of the high crimes and misdemeanors for which he is charged.

As if there is some murky doubt about any of the evidence. As if confessions were not publicly uttered by Trump himself, defiant and just as criminal as if he had whispered them behind closed doors.

Far too many so-called journalists of note, goose-step with the Fuhrer and the Republican Reich! Thank God for the good ones!  RESIST!!

From Crooks and Liars: Duncan Hunter, Republican Representative and convicted criminal announced late on Friday that he will be resigning “shortly after the holidays.” Just a few days ago, Hunter pleaded guilty to a sole charge of misusing campaign funds, although he actually faced a shocking 60 counts! Sounds like he got a sweet plea deal.

San Diego 10 News reports that Hunter put out the following statement late on Friday:

“Shortly after the Holidays I will resign from Congress. It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years.”

Hunter faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, although chances are he will see under a year in detention, if he is actually locked up at all. Based on the sentencing guidelines for a first time offender, the judge could just give him house arrest and a fine. He is set to be sentenced on March 17th. His wife also pleaded guilty earlier this year. Her sentencing isn’t scheduled until April.

It’s time to charge Hunter for his own role in the Republican sedition. RESIST!!

It’s a comparatively lazy day, here in the CatBox.  Today’s articles are my only chore, except routine food prep and cleanup.  I am a bit tired, because stayed up to watch the 13th ranked Oregon Ducks win the PAC 12 by beating the 5th ranked Utah Utes 37 – 15.  Tomorrow is a Holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  My Broncos are playing the Texans.  Pat will get to watch it.  I won’t.  Sadly, no matter how much I yell at Pat, her team is just too horny for my guys.  Tomorrow is also a WWWendy Day.  One of our planned chores is to fleece the shaggy TomCat, before de-stinking the rancid TomCat.  Therefor, please expect no more than a Personal Update.  Have a great weekend.

From Alternet: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rammed through eight of President Donald Trump’s lifetime judicial picks in just three days this week, accelerating the far-right court takeover that one commentator warned is “absolutely going to hamstring efforts to make the U.S. into a responsible, civilized country, for as long as we live.”

The latest slew of confirmations, according to Bloomberg‘s Sahil Kapur, means that Trump and his Federalist Society allies have now hand-picked “about one in every five American federal judges,” or 170 judges total.

“Nearly all are in their 40s or 50s with lifetime appointments and positioned to shape American law for generations,” Kapur noted on Twitter. “It gets a tiny fraction of attention compared to other stuff he does but this is the Trump legacy that’ll echo for generations after he’s gone.”

I wish I knew what to do. Frankly, I’m at a loss. Can we impeach 170 at once?  My best guest is that the majority are guilty of crimes, if only lying during their confirmation process.  As soon as we return DOJ to the people, they all should be investigated, and most, indicted, convicted, and/or disbarred.  RESIST!!

Bob Bauer, a trusted Obama advisor, has written a fascinating editorial on how the founding fathers predicted Donald Trump, Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, but failed to provide the necessary tools to get rid of him.  Here is enough of that editorial for you to get the gist of it.

1203Demogogue

Donald Trump’s Republican congressional allies are throwing up different defenses against impeachment and hoping that something may sell. They say that he didn’t seek a corrupt political bargain with Ukraine, but that if he did, he failed, and the mere attempt is not impeachable. Or that it is not clear that he did it, because the evidence against him is unreliable “hearsay.”

It’s all been very confusing. But the larger story — the crucial constitutional story — is not the incoherence of the president’s defense. It is more that he and his party are exposing limits of impeachment as a response to the presidency of a demagogue.

The founders feared the demagogue, who figures prominently in the Federalist Papers as the politician who, possessing “perverted ambition,” pursues relentless self-aggrandizement “by the confusions of their country.” The last of the papers, Federalist No. 85, linked demagogy to its threat to the constitutional order — to the “despotism” that may be expected from the “victorious demagogue.” This “despotism” is achieved through systematic lying to the public, vilification of the opposition and, as James Fenimore Cooper wrote in an essay on demagogues, a claimed right to disregard “the Constitution and the laws” in pursuing what the demagogue judges to be the “interests of the people.”

Should the demagogue succeed in winning the presidency, impeachment in theory provides the fail-safe protection. And yet the demagogue’s political tool kit, it turns out, may be his most effective defense. It is a constitutional paradox: The very behaviors that necessitate impeachment supply the means for the demagogue to escape it.

As the self-proclaimed embodiment of the American popular will, the demagogue portrays impeachment deliberations as necessarily a threat to democracy, a facade for powerful interests arrayed against the people that only he represents. Critics and congressional opponents are traitors. Norms and standing institutional interests are fraudulent… [emphasis added]
