Congrats to Jerry Critter for posting the 54,000th comment here at Politics Plus. This is his fourth award. The last was the last of the every 500 awards that he won in June, 2011. He used to visit, because he is addicted to the Jig Zone Puzzles in our Open Thread. He still mutters “My Precious”, while doing them. Now he is fully engaged in all aspects of this site, and is one of the few people who has been here since before we converted to WordPress from Blogger, masking him a friend of many years standing. He remains one of our most prolific commentators, and writes an excellent blog of his own. You can find him at Critter’s Crap. Please join me in thanking him.
Here are the results of our PP Theme Poll. Politics Plus Polls are not scientific, because those who respond are not balanced according to demographic categories. Therefore, we do not accurately reflect the makeup of the US population. Nevertheless, our polls are often both accurate and indicative of the nation’s view. However, I rather doubt that the nation is riveted on the look and feel of Politics Plus.

First of all – change it to WHAT?!?
I voted "Doesn’t Matter"
No doubt there are "tweaks" that would improve ANY website – but has there been a major problem in this one? (OK – Emoticons … but I don’t consider THAT a MAJOR problem)
As the adage goes:
"If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it."
(Improve it all you want – but I’ll keep coming back)

Love it just as is change is only important if it makes your life easier….
Posted by Edie June 1, 2014 at 5:44 pm.
I like it just as it is, but if you change it, I will still be reading it.

Unless changing things makes it work better for you, it’s fine the way it is, with just one little nit-pick. Those posters you put up with the multi-colored wording are sometimes difficult for us color-deficient vision types to read.

I look forward to Tom’s articles, even though I do not comment, I do read them and would not change a thing.

Like everyone else, I like it just fine the way it is. But I don’t come for the theme. I come for the content, and to some degree for the other commenters.
Posted by Lona Goudswaard June 1, 2014 at 3:14 am.
I’m with the others on this one. You don’t have to change ot on my account, but it is your blog, TomCat, and if you want to change it for one reason or another, please feel free to do so, as long as you keep the quality and content as it is.
Posted by Patty June 1, 2014 at 1:18 am.
I’m with Lynn on this. If it makes it easier for you, then by all means do it. If it makes it more complicated and harder for you to continue this wonderful blog, then leave it be.

Concur with Lynn.

Doesn’t matter to me. I am of a mind that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Having said that, if it makes your job as administrator/owner easier, then do it. I come to the site for content and people. Always have, always will! . . . well unless you get a weird disease that turns you into a Republican! God forbid!

OMG!! Republicosis?!!?
Posted by Lynn Squance in reply to TomCat June 1, 2014 at 7:21 am.
"OMG!!" is right! That is akin to a full blown psychosis! Not good! Not good at all!
Rarely in such a minority, I was one of the two who voted yes. The theme I’m using now is a good one, but it has undergone a lot of changes since I originally installed it years ago. I don’t fully understand them and support is not the programmer’s strong suit. I’m considering a switch to Graphene. It appears to have all the features I want, is very well documented, and because it is open source, there is a large community of knowledgeable people that support it well. That is the upside. The downside is that, when and if I change it, redesigning the layout will take many hours of work. So, sooner or later, I probably shall, but don’t expect it in the immediate future.
In May, Politics Plus improved in every category except Sites and Pages, which was unusually high last month, so I’m pleased with the progress. This is a highly abbreviated report. Normally, collecting the data and formatting it takes several hours, and with this week’s schedule, it’s several hours I just don’t have. Please accept my apology. Next month’s should be back on track.
In the monthly totals, a Site is any website from which someone accessed our server, a Hit is every access attempt to our server, and a File is every access attempt to our server that returned data. The difference between Hits and Files is from access attempts that were sent in error or damaged in transit and failed attempts by hackers, spammers, phishers, and Republicans to access the back end and take control of the site. Any questions?
Here is our latest Clustrmap:
This is the new map that is starting to look less naked. It shows only the visits from March 2 to May 31.
Our improved performance again last month was because of you. Thank you for everything you do.
Here are the results of our Hillary Primary Opposition Poll. Politics Plus Polls are not scientific, because those who respond are not balanced according to demographic categories. We need someone more Progressive than Hillary. but I would vote for her if she is the candidate.

Encourage responsible democrats unlike the GOP which let the loonies out of the bin and had them running for office.
Posted by Edie May 18, 2014 at 6:20 pm.
I marked "neither". If she is the nominee, I will vote for her, but I think we should not close out any other options. I like her, but she is a seasoned politician, and will do what is best for herself.
Posted by mamabear in reply to Edie May 22, 2014 at 1:32 am.
Edie, lol She already has and will do what is best for herself. In 2008 she thought no one could beat her and in itself was a wake up call for her. Yes she is seasoned no doubt, but in the scheme of things we as a country can not let a republican/teaparty return in the White House. The Democratic Party should take some lead a grow a back bone before all the work that has been done goes to just another side note in history. We must play hard ball or we will lose.
Posted by mamabearclaw May 18, 2014 at 6:59 am.
I think she should run and encourage her. I think it is time for a woman to get in the White House It would be a stepping stone for another great woman like Elizabeth Warren. Who will address all our concerns. Yes Andrew Cuomo and even Biden but in order for our country to go forward we now need an old school like Hillary to push us into to future. Obama has done a wonderful job showing respect for women and our party is the one who take the White House for another 20yrs? So that is what we can do.
Posted by gene May 17, 2014 at 3:27 am.
Hillary is a fine woman but I am more progressive than she by many orders of magnitude. She’d play the "game" the way it always has been played and I want it played in an entirely new way, a way suitable for the 21st century, new ideas, new approaches, all the people of this world valued and cared for, not just pawns to argue over; and more, this world cared for in a serious way we have never yet done, because future generations depend on us and we are failing them. It is time to start fresh. And catch up to the rest of the civilized world in our economic, political and environmental practices. More of the same is just not enough, not anymore, not now.
Posted by Phil Hanson in reply to gene May 25, 2014 at 6:33 pm.
Exactly, Gene! Just because Hillary lacks balls doesn’t mean she’s not one of the good ol’ boys.; a Hillary Presidency would be disastrous for the country for the same reasons that the Obama Presidency is.
Posted by Joanne D May 17, 2014 at 3:26 am.
Boy, if there was ever a question where the answer was "It depends," this is it. Crass though it is, we must consider electability. You can be the greatest Progressive in the world but you can’t accomplish a thing if you can’t get elected. Primary challenges tend to hurt the eventual candidate’s electability, though there are exceptions. There are many people I would rather have as President than Hillary, but I am not sure I’d encourage any of them to run now. I would like to know how David Nir and David Jarman at Daily Kos would answer this question, since I doubt whether anyone understands elections better.
Posted by Rixar13 May 16, 2014 at 3:37 pm.
Neither –
Posted by Marva May 16, 2014 at 6:11 am.
We shouldn’t be putting up an "annointed one." Lots of good, honest debate through a Democratic primary will help show undecided voters what the Dems stand for.
Posted by misstexaskitty May 16, 2014 at 3:52 am.
We need to encourage more voices to speak to possible presidential runs. I like Andrew Cuomo, and would like to hear what vision he has.
Posted by Patty in reply to misstexaskitty 6 hours ago.
If you lived in NY state, you wouldn’t like him that much. He is in bed with some very rich people and still caters to them a bit too much.
Posted by misstexaskitty in reply to Patty 5 hours ago.
I have no doubt that is true, Patty. As does Hilary and anyone that might be considered for a run in 2016. Hilary is on the consultant board for Monsanto, that does irritate
me.
Posted by Yvonne White May 15, 2014 at 4:16 pm.
The party needs to get it’s act together & redefine what it is & what it represents! A solid Progressive/Liberal platform will eject those old-school DINOs for the good of ALL Democrats!
Hillary or not – the Leader MUST be Liberal, NOT another Bu$h League Corporate enabler!
I voted neither. Someone who needs to be dragged into running for President will be a far less enthusiastic campaigner than someone who really wants the job. That said, if there were a more progressive candidate for the Democratic nomination that actually had a chance at winning the general, that candidate would have my support. I’m not thrilled with Hillary, because she’s less progressive than Obama. Nevertheless, if nominated, Hillary will have my enthusiastic support, because the Republican opposing her will be less progressive than Caligula and less competent than Nero.
I’m writing for tomorrow and have spent much of the last day trying to find a solution for the incompatibility between the needed security patches in the latest version of WordPress and several of the features in our WYSIWYG comment editing plugin for all except the administrator (me). I uninstalled and reinstalled it different ways three times to no avail. I tried two similar plugins, but their conflicts were even worse. So I put it back the way it was. The alternative is to return to the native comment editor with no advanced features for anyone. I have made inquiries to s designer of graphic editors about the possibility of a custom installation here. Meanwhile, I hope your remembrance has been pain free. Day 36.
Late (early) Update:
I overslept BIG time, so this is way late.

Today’s took me 4:55 (average 5:51). To do it, click here. How did you do?
Short Takes:
From Upworthy: Are The Guts Of Your Cell Phone Hiding An Illegal Operation?
The good news is that, on further research, I discovered that Intel has developed a supply-chain to make a line of microprocessors that are 100% conflict-free. Kudos!
From NY Times: Hospital systems around the country have started scaling back financial assistance for lower- and middle-income people without health insurance, hoping to push them into signing up for coverage through the new online marketplaces created under the Affordable Care Act.
The trend is troubling to advocates for the uninsured, who say raising fees will inevitably cause some to skip care rather than buy insurance that they consider unaffordable. Though the number of hospitals tightening access to free or discounted care appears limited so far, many say they are considering doing so, and experts predict that stricter policies will become increasingly common.
Driving the new policies is the cost of charity care, which is partly covered by government but remains a burden for many hospitals. The new law also reduces federal aid to hospitals that treat large numbers of poor and uninsured people, creating an additional pressure on some to restrict charity care.
I actually support this hospital policy, depending on where and when it is implemented. In states where Republicans have denied healthcare to the working poor by refusing to accept federal Medicaid expansion funds, this policy would be horrid, and should not be implemented at all. However in some states, the only people who lack access to affordable health care from their employers, the exchanges or Medicaid are those who refuse to participate by their own choice. Also such a change must delayed until after the next open enrollment period, so everyone has a chance to enroll, knowing that they can’t play the system anymore. In that case, I say go for it.
From TPM: A Mississippi judge allegedly slapped a young mentally disabled black man earlier this month at a flea market and yelled "run, n—-, run," the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported Sunday.
The family of Eric Rivers, 20, filed a complaint against Madison County Justice Court Judge Bill Weisenberger, who is white, accusing him of striking Rivers at the market on May 8 in Canton, Miss.
"This is 2014, not 1960, where someone could slap a young man and call out, ‘Run, n—–, run,’" former Canton Mayor William Truly, now president of the Canton branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told the Clarion-Ledger.
An apparent witness, Tammy Westbrook, told the newspaper Rivers was offering to help flea market vendors unload their goods when Weisenberger slapped him twice, then yelled "run, n—-, run" as he fled. Westbrook and her sister, a vendor at the flea market, recalled that they thought Weisenberger was a law enforcement officer because he was wearing a security guard’s uniform.
The world is getting really strange when Republican judges are dressing up as rent-a-cops to assault minorities at a flea market. On the other hand, if he gets fired in Mississippi, he’ll find a warm welcome wherever else Republicans are in power.

Edie first showed up at Politics Plus a little over a year ago, and she became an instant regular, commenting on almost every article. This her second Big Mouth Award, and her first was in 8/2012. She is a denizen of Care2, where she is also very active. I have no doubt that she’ll be busier than a long-tail cat at a rocking chair convention supporting Alison Grimes to defeat her Senator, Bought Bitch Mitch (R-KY). Lets let her know we’re glad she’s here. Congrats Edie!
Here are the results of our Worst Republican Governor Poll. Politics Plus Polls are not scientific, because those who respond are not balanced according to demographic categories. Therefore, we do not accurately reflect the makeup of the US population. Nevertheless, our polls are often both accurate and indicative of the nation’s view. However this does not appear to be one of those times.

I finally decided on Chris Christie (NJ). lol.
Posted by SoINeedAName May 13, 2014 at 3:38 pm.
Shame – SHAME – on you, TC, for not including an "ALL THE ABOVE"
I went with Perry – NOT because I think he’s actually the worse, but because his "worseness" impacts more Americans than any of the others.
PS – You know what I don’t hear about anymore from the MSM? The vaunted "BENCH" of potential presidential candidates the MSM pundits kept telling us the Rethuglicans had.
Gee … I wonder why?

5 governors are up for re-election in 2014: Deal (GA), Scott (FL), Snyder (MI), Fallin (OK), Walker (WI). 3 are Presidential hopefuls: Perry (TX), Walker (WI), Christie (NJ). more info: www.citizensforethics.org/worst-governors-in-america

It was a hard decision but I had to go with Rick Scott of Florida. My reasons are varied. Besides all the stupid voter suppression laws and taking money from education and social programs, he stole money from his state’s own Medicaid system and Medicare. He’s a vile man.
Posted by Fred Lemon May 5, 2014 at 9:16 pm.
It was such a close call but I had to pick Perry because of his war against education, his war against abortion clinics, and "OOPS
" you know all the other things he has or has not done.

TomCat,
You just know that people must vote for their own worthless governor. I sure did.

Go Ricky go.
Posted by gene jacobson May 5, 2014 at 5:40 am.
I had to go with other, because it isn’t possible to pick just one of those fools. They are just clones, each trying to outdo the other. And as they are all 2010 teapublicans, I am most interested in seeing most of them sent back to the swamps they crawled out of in November.

Mitch Daniels

I picked Walker..just hear more about him.
But worst "Democratic" Governor is Pat Quinn! He’s setting the RepubliCONs up for an easy victory..:(
Posted by Rixar13 May 4, 2014 at 7:33 am.
More than one… Three comes to mind.
Rick Scott (R-FL)
Chris Christie (R-NJ)
Scott Walker (R-WI)
Posted by Joanne D May 4, 2014 at 5:45 am.
All of the above plus a few others. Susanna Martinez comes to mind. Even my own "Democratic" Governor, while good on other issues, wants to frack the whole state. Isn’t it sad when the best you can say about your Governor is he (or she) could be worse?
Posted by TomCat May 3, 2014 at 9:41 pm.
Come on peeps! All was not included for a reason.

Seems that there are a number of us with like minds — other. They are ALL dreadful in their own ways and not worthy of the appellation "human being"! What do you expect, they’re Republicans!
Posted by Jim Phillips May 3, 2014 at 10:38 am.
While I have not voted, as yet, for the worst governor, will there be a "prize" given for the worst governor to that "governor" after all the votes are in and counted…?
Posted by Jerry Critter May 3, 2014 at 9:31 am.
Other = All Of The Above
Posted by Terrie C. Williams May 3, 2014 at 8:54 am.
ALL of the above.
Posted by Wayne W May 3, 2014 at 7:23 am.
I would vote for Tom Corbett as the worst just because he’s mine, although I know there are really worse ones and the whole lot is dreadful.
Posted by dave c May 3, 2014 at 6:48 am.
I think all governors with an R after their name are "the worst" for their citizens…..still cannot fathom why anyone votes for them…
It seems that we have a lot of people from Texas and Florida. In addition, I unintentionally influenced the results, because I posted a couple articles featuring the Fartfuhrer of Fitzwalkerstan, Scott Walker. The reason I did not include All of the Above is that it’s too easy an answer to pick without really thinking about it. My intent for this poll was to stimulate thought about all these horrid Republicans and thereby create an awareness of the importance of flushing Republicans from state and local offices as well as federal.
I voted for Chris Christie, aka PIGnocchio. With him, I see all the things that are individually wrong with the other governors combined in one obnoxious package.
There is a new poll available not. Please vote here, and on (or before) November 4 where you live.
