The heat here continues and is forecast to last an extra day, ending on Sunday.  The temperature in my apartment dropped below 90° slightly after 6:00 AM.  The DNC is dominating the news cycle, so my coverage of it is today’s only other article.  I’m current with replies. Tomorrow appears routine.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:37 (average 4:55).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From MoveOn: What All Women (And The Men Who Love Them) Need To Know Before November

We cannot repeat often enough that a woman, who votes Republican, is voting for her own oppression.

From Huffington Post: President’s Accomplishments Highlighted Ahead Of DNC Speech

Finally the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party are publicizing Obama’s accomplishments. This should have started over three years ago.

From The New Yorker: Former President Bill Clinton apologized last night for reading what he called “a severely abbreviated” version of his Convention speech, saying that he had planned to read a “very educational and interesting” nine-hour version but lost his nerve.

Dang! We missed it!! 🙁

  1. Puzzle — 3:45 I don't smell so sweet!  But on my second try, got to 3:31.  I enjoy the challenge of "How low can I go!"

MoveOn — An excellent video.  A MUST SEE for every woman and man in the country!  This really touched a nerve for me.

"92 laws in 24 states restricting access to family planning in 2011 and 430 more introduced in 2012" — that is way over the top!

"I don't think people understand the medicine enough and I don't think the members of Congress understand the medicine enough to be making these decisions…" — Most members of Congress are NOT medical doctors, so they are acting like unlicensed practitioners, which last time I looked was illegal and unethical.

"…women are not equal in different states because of where they live" — and this doesn't just apply to women's healthcare but it applies to other things too like voting laws.  There is NO separate but equal.  There is only separate and UNEQUAL.

"Every woman in this country should have equal access to the full range of healthcare choices…" — a given!  unfortunately not a reality!

"…women have had to go to backalleys for treatment, and incurring deprivation of their opportunities to succeed in the workplace, to go on and build productive lives.  It sets us back!…" — I don't know US divorce rates, but when a couple divorces, more often women have custody of any children; have to provide with or without child support, for those children; have to be able to get out into the workplace and earn a descent living.  Further, by not allowing contraception means women playing russian roulette with their reproductive health and their careers.

My fondest wish is to see men (well some anyway) subjected to the same 'opportunities' of pregnancy as women endure every day.  Can't you just see Agent Orange or Cantor or Ryan all of a sudden finding out that they are pregnant!  I bet their tone would change.  All of these idiots that support such draconian laws, who wage a war on women, are frightened little boys in short pants!

Huffington Post — Excellent video again!  This is the type of video that should come annually, say around the State of the Union address when the look back is evaluated and the path forward is layed out.

The New Yorker — Hmmm… 2 and a quarter hours per year to sum up a presidency.  That's not much!  Although, I imagine butts in chairs would take issue with it!  I'm glad he went to plan B!

Cartoon — Personally, I think the dialogue should be "I AM the President!" but my impression of Mr Obama is that he is more the "I am the President!" type.  Couldn't help thinking that he is a fine looking man!  (Yes I have already cleaned up the drool from my keyboard!)

  2. You don't have to have the benefit of hearing to be moved by this video of Rep. Gabby Giffords leading the delegates in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance on the last night of the Convention.
(WARNING: Even a grizzled old curmudgeon like myself found it useful to keep a Kleenex close by.)

    • WOW!!!!!  Hanky time indeed!

It was a stirring moment indeed!  People did not join in immediately.  I think their emotions at seeing Gabby Giffords caught them off guard, but they did join in!  Certainly the cameras showed many tears — tears or wonder, of joy, of courage for her.  Marvellous.

      Thanks Nameless!

    • I think the people were stunned to see her walk out on stage with her good friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz and actually speak. She did a wonderful job with a little help from her friends. Bless her and all the survivors of "terrorist" attacks.

    • Hasn't she come a long way back since Sarah Palin's bullseye?

  3. Obama is our president  love the cartoon thanks Tom

  4. I don't understand how any woman could willingly vote for the repubs this year.  They have gone after women's rights in a way not seen since the fifties.

  5. One of the most effective ways for the ruling class (grumpy old white men) to subjugate women is to keep them barefoot and pregnant.

I am thrilled that they are finally praising Pres. Obama's accomplishments.

Yes! Obama is OUR President and as Bill Clinton so graciously informed everyone of one of GW's famous quotes, he is the "decider". I got a giggle out of that one.
