It’s another slow news day, as the media play “he said, she said” over last weeks gaffes.   However I did find a couple interesting items.  I’m current with replies.  Tomorrow I’ll be doing volunteer work in prison, so it’s probable that I’ll post only an open thread.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:04 (average 5:27).  To do it click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From MoveOn: Bernie Sanders Has An Amazingly Simple Idea To Fix Social Security For The Next 75 Years

11SocSec

I disagree with Bernie. If we eliminate the income cap altogether, we fix Social Security permanently.

From Reuters: Six American families paid no federal income taxes in 2009 while making something on the order of $200 million each. This is one of many stunning revelations in new IRS data that deserves a thorough airing in this year’s election campaign.

The data, posted on the IRS website last week, brings into sharp focus the debate over whether the rich need more tax cuts (Mitt Romney and congressional Republicans) or should pay higher rates (President Obama and most Democrats).

Both Romney and Obama think this is unfair.  The difference is that Rmoney thinks it unfair only because he isn’t one of them.

From Washington Post: Woodward and Bernstein: 40 years after Watergate, Nixon was far worse than we thought.

Click through for this historic piece, because it is well worth the read.  In addition, it validates my long held position that much of the hate based strategy that has become Republican SOP goes back to Nixon rather than Reagan.

  1. 3:17  Alright!  Second time in a row under 2 minutes less than the average.  I’m on a roll.

How about making the cap flexible?  SS is good for another 25 years or so.  Let’s just adjust the cap every year to keep that 25 year cushion.

  2. While I agree with you WRT removing the SS Cap, I also have to give Bernie some chops – at least it’s a start.

The Fortune Fortunate 400 high-income group that pays NO TAXES figures out to 1 in every 189 of them, according to Bloomberg from the same IRS data.

The media has been obsessed with repeating over and over and over Pres. Obama’s comment taken out of context that “the private sector is doing fine.”  Today Jeb Bush said that his father and Ronald Reagan would not be welcomed in today’s radical right-wing Repubican Party.  You think the media will even cover THAT comment?

  3. Puzzle — well under the average but nowhere near you and Jerry!  I guess it goes to show that I am a bird brain, but with fine cat qualities!

MoveOn — Go Bernie!  You might disagree with him TC, but at least it is a start.  Jerry has a solution that seems workable, and it would provide work for actuarialists!

Reuters — That is blasphemy!  Unfair in deed, but only for the families and persons that end up paying more in income tax than the rich.  Rmoney, get over it!  This is not nor should it be an entitlement society!

     Watergate, 40 Years Later —

from the article — “… At its most virulent, Watergate was a brazen and daring assault, led by Nixon himself, against the heart of American democracy: the Constitution, our system of free elections, the rule of law. …” said Senator Sam Ervin.

    This sounds like today’s Republican/Teabaggers!

    Excellent piece!

Cartoon — There is no ‘could have been’ the candidate that lost to Barak Obama, there only is ‘will be’ the candidate that  will lose to Barak Obama!

    • LOL!

My disagreement with him is only one of degree.

      That’s just what I’m saying.

      Today’s are worse.

      Amen!

      Amen again!
