Two weeks from today, Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy will face off to determine who will be the new President of France.
Socialist Francois Hollande and conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy are heading for a runoff in the race for France’s presidency, according to partial official results after a first round of voting Sunday.
Voters also handed a surprisingly strong third-place showing to anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim candidate Marine Le Pen, the partial results indicated.
The contest, to be resolved in the runoff May 6, could alter the European political landscape as the continent deals with a financial crisis.
Hollande was in the overall lead, amid widespread disappointment with Sarkozy’s first term and a sense that the incumbent favors the rich when the country is struggling with unemployment and bleak economic prospects.
With about 33 percent of the vote counted, Hollande had 27.5 percent of ballots cast and Sarkozy 26.6 percent, according to figures released by the Interior Ministry after final polls closed…

Hollande is favored and I certainly hope he wins. Sarko is one of the key figures behind Europe’s failed Austerity programs, while Hollande is the closest thing France has to Bernie Sanders. More in two weeks.

Sarkozy does NOT eat cheese, NOR drink wine … I’m not even sure this guy is French. Maybe we can send Orly Taitz over to pester HIM about producing his Long-Form Birth Certificate. (I’m sure France is in need of a few Birther “female” dentist-lawyer combos.)
Damn Nameless, hang a pork chop around her neck and even the dog wouldn’t play with her. So this is the “original birther”.
I hope, for the sake of the French, Hollande wins the election.
Looking at a map of results and comparing it to the 2007 results, it is very clear that the French are tired of Sarkozy and his austerity package. Now the problem will be trying to win over more of the voters for the May 6 run off. Personally, I hope François Hollande wins the election and gives the left the chance to deal with the debt crisis etc.

Just saw an update and Sarkozy is reaching out to the far right — Marine Le Pen and the Front National. She is popular in the northern industrial areas which actually may be more enamoured with François Hollande of the Parti Socialiste. It will depend I think on just how rabid they are about immigration versus jobs. Le Pen is anti-immigration.Just over a week to wait for the run-off election.
