Yesterday I got most my needed work done, but it really tired me out.  I’m current on replies.  Today I co-facilitate a therapy group for former prisoners, so I’ll miss my morning sleep. Therefore, tomorrow may be light on articles.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today it took me 3:48 (average 4:24).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From LA Times: A court in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, has sentenced a woman to 10 lashes for defying the kingdom’s ban on female drivers, Amnesty International said Tuesday.

News of the decision came just two days after King Abdullah surprised his ultraconservative nation by announcing that women would be given the right to vote, run for local office and serve on the Shura Council, the king’s advisory board.

This is where barbarism and irony meet.

From Raw Story: Leisha Hailey, an actress who starred on "The L-Word" and performs in electro-pop band Uh Huh Her, took to the Twittersphere Monday evening in a tirade against Southwest Airlines.

Hailey said that she had kissed another woman on a Southwest flight, and was told by an employee that Southwest was a "family airline" and was subsequently removed from the flight.

I can understand how Southwest might not want people making out during the flight, but I’ve never heard of a hetero couple thrown off an airliner for it.

  1. It’s easy to get the message of your ‘cartoon,’ Tom.  But in this case, I’m wondering what’s going on outside of the picture’s boundaries that puts that look upon the woman’s face.  Nothing shown in the picture speaks of brutality to me.   Inappropriate, unnecessary, beyond the bounds of respect, yes, but it could also be a photo op for the protester.  I hope no one protesting is baiting anyone because it is only in showing the reality of how our world is crumbling that all the people will finally see we are being killed off, little by little… if not literally, at least spiritually.

  4. Saudi Arabia — In my mind, driving is a privilege, not a right, and the same goes in North America or Europe for both men and women.  However, not to be able to get a drivers’ license on the same basis as men when they are available to men is inequitable.  And women who must have the approval of a male family member before marrying, working, divorcing, travelling, being admitted to a public hospital, or living independently are having their human rights trampled.

Women are not 2nd class citizens of the world anywhere. Women world over are the bearers of children who nurture and raise the children, the next generation.  If they can be trusted with this important task, then why should they not be able to do things and make decisions that affect them like most women in North/South America and Europe do and take for granted?

I have never seen any logical argument to support the prohibition. To me it is all about male dominance, male power, and male ego.

Leisha Hailey — Somewhere inbetween is the truth.  As the line from a movie goes, ‘we have a failure to communicate’.  It would seem that had SW Airline employees simply said there were concerns from other passengers about pda’s then this fiasco might not have escalated.  But instead, the employee made it the airline’s problem instead of the passenger’s and that brought out the ire.  As far as Hailey goes, she could have kept her cool better based on the reports provided.  Not that she had to agree with what had happened, but by swearing and carrying on, she exposes herself to ridicule.  Having said this, had Hailey been engaged with a male, chances are the passenger would probably not complained.  When we as a people, grow up and mind our own business when actions have no bearing on our safety or well being?

Cartoon — When I first saw this photo 2 days ago, my first reaction was to reach for my throat.  Had anybody had their arm or hand in that position on me, I would have looked much the same, not as a ploy, but out of sheer terror that I could not adequately breathe.  When we view pictures of events like this, we take our own baggage into the picture with us.  Do I think this was excessive — yes.  The whole tenor of the police management team involvement was ridiculous.  Just look at Bologna!  And if they were merely carrying out the orders of the mayor, then they need to give their heads a shake and challenge, respectively, the mayor.  After all, if the mayor said ‘Go jump off the Brooklyn Bridge’, would any of these management level officers do that?
    Good cartoon TomCat.

    • I know I don’t get to dictate to other cultures, but I cannot favor supporting such a government.

Good observations, but I understand that the yelling started after they had been told to leave the flight.

Thanks, and see my comment to Caity.
