An Openly Gay Senator?

Gay Senators are nothing new, but it would be most refreshing to have one who is openly gay, a credit to the LGBT community, not a publicly gay-hating Republican hypocrite, involved in such nonsense as trolling in airport restrooms.  I’m happy to learn that having one is a distinct possibility.  If Tammy Baldwin wins the Democratic primary, she may be the next US Senator from Fitzwalkerstan, formerly WI.

7Tammy-BaldwinRep. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin launched her bid for the Senate on Tuesday, an effort that if successful would make her the first openly gay senator in U.S. history.

The label Baldwin is more interested in running on is "progressive fighter," which is the title of the YouTube video her campaign released Tuesday announcing her candidacy.

"I’ve made standing up for the middle class my top priority, and I’ve never hesitated to speak my mind," she says in the video.

But her campaign is not shying away from the potentially groundbreaking nature of her candidacy. The same video notes media coverage of her election to Congress in 1998 as "open[ing] doors for gays."

"The fact is, I’ve been honest about my sexual orientation my entire adult life. And integrity is important in public service," Baldwin said in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, published Tuesday. "But what voters are looking for is somebody who understands them, is fighting for them and won’t give up. The election is not going to be about me, it’s about the voters."… [emphasis added]

Here is her campaign video.

Now I’m not suggesting that anyone should vote for or against her because she is gay.  That should not matter, but it will to Republicans.  I think she is worthy of our support, because she is a solid progressive.

  1. I think it is really stupid that someone’s sexual orientation is even an issue to some. Most who are voted in due to their “family values” stance don’t give a damn about people at all.

  2. You can bet that all of the closeted “family values” Republicans will be protest loud and long against her.

    • The problem all along with repubicans trying to claim “Family Values” has been: Whose family?  Whose values?

    • Family values? — I wonder what we would find if we looked in the closet of every Republican?  A little hanky?  A little panky?  Hmmmmmmmm. . . . .

  3. As my dear grandmother (b1870) taught me well– “as long as they don’t do it in the streets and scare the horses” none of my concern.

That is still my view– when her door closes- none of my business- or worry–I believe attention paid to what is our concern is much more important that this ladies , or any person’s private social  relationships . Lets get our nosy noses out of bedrooms and on issues that matter–

  4. ELECT TAMMY BALDWIN SENATOR! We sorely need more progressives to join Bernie Sanders there!

  5. I agree with Pope Jack!  She talks a good talk and given that she has been a Congressperson since 1998, I think she must walk the good talk for her constituents.  She certainly seems to have her constituents clearly in focus.

  6. If someone could please explain why a person’s sexual orientation is related to their ability to be a congresswoman or senator, I’m listening.  It will be interesting to see how the Republican party reacts to her campaign — I’m anticipating the long knives to come out immediately.

  7. Go Tammy!
