If Barack Obama wants to win reelection, he needs to stop being the great compromiser or the adult in the room. He needs to stand up for the American people. When Republicans scheme to blackmail America for the sake of millionaires, billionaires, and corporate criminals, Obama needs to resist. Just say no to tyranny!
A 37% plurality now contends that Obama should challenge the Republicans in Congress more often; 25% say Obama should go along with GOP leaders more frequently, while about the same percentage (26%) say he is handling the situation about right. In April, fewer (27%) said Obama should challenge GOP congressional leaders more often.
Democrats, in particular, are now more likely to say Obama should challenge Republicans in Congress more often. Today, a majority of Democrats (57%) say Obama should challenge the GOP more frequently; in April, just 39% said this.
And there is little difference among Democrats on this question. Liberal Democrats and their conservative and moderate counterparts are about equally likely to want to see Obama stand up more to Republicans (60%, 55% respectively)… [emphasis added]

If Obama wants his party behind him, he needs to represent them.

Well put, Tom. There are many well intentioned folks out there who feel that any critique of Obama is wrong and potentially destructive, and could end up hurting his chances at re-election. To that I have to say that there is a thread of self-destructiveness in how the President responds to these immature obstructionists in the GOP, and that just makes a lot of us lose faith in him.
I hope he wakes up. I will vote for him and work for him, but it would help immensely if he gives good reasons beyond “who else would you vote for?”
Welcome George! 🙂
Thanks! As I see it, I have a right to my own opinions, not my own facts, so although I am in his corner, I am not in his pocket and will not sugar coat his failings. A supporter who speaks truth to power is worth a hundred sycophants.
This is only my opinion and I don’t claim to know everything, but if I was the President, the next time a disaster happened and ANY Republican said they weren’t going to fund aid, until “programs” were cut elsewhere. I would say “fine!” “Let’s end the wars and cut defense.” “There will be no cuts of any domestic and social programs!” “PERIOD!” 👿
Now would be a good time to do it. I think there are a lot more people disgusted with the “wars”, than is showing in the polls. A lot of my tea party friends were against them when Bush started them!
If I was going to get voted out of office, I would rather it be because I was for peace and prosperity, not for caving to Republican nonsense! 👿
Even as TS Irene was bearing down on New York city, the NY Times carried this article this morning. Glad to see national coverage on this — think O’s team reads the NY Times?
Well, just like Repubicans think that if you give folks who can’t find a job unemployment insurance to keep body and soul together, it will just encourage more people to be unemployed.
So following this Repubican “logic” – if our government gives aid to citizens devastated by earthquakes and hurricanes, it will just encourage more and MORE earthquakes and hurricanes.
I agree with everything said here.
I agree, however O has made it clear, and campaigned on the idea that he would finish the “war” where it “should have been concentrated on in the first place” – he may have been right a decade ago, but now is not the time to finish/start the beating of the hornets nest – when the country is reeling from economic and infra-structural devastation and neglect!
It is O’s worst policy to continue the imperialistic path to gain oil – neglect jobs – de-regulate Wall St and industry – seems all too familiar, if he wants to save face he might want to implement the policies that his party stands for and not advance those of his dumb predecessor!
I agree that is what he needs to do, but he cannot do it alone.
You nailed it in this post. There is no question that Obama is the adult in the room, but when you’re dealing with children who are behaving badly the last thing you should do is treat them like adults.
Welcome Maria! 🙂
Thank you so much. You understand my thinking perfectly.
I support President Obama-have from the start- he has the potential for greatness–However..At this time I just want to shake him sometimes–He is needed to provide Leadership–to make it clear what he stands for ; as it is I am no longer sure-Perhaps it is time for new advisors ?
Phyllis, how can you help him realise that he has a potential for greatness? How can you shake him as you say into realising his leadership role?
Wasn’t it JFK that said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!”
Stand up and be vocal and be counted.
I agree with both of you. Support him, but at the same time demand that he support us.
Numbers don’t lie.
Amen!
“A 37% plurality now contends that Obama should challenge the Republicans in Congress more often; 25% say Obama should go along with GOP leaders more frequently, while about the same percentage (26%) say he is handling the situation about right. . . .”
Let me guess, the 25% who say Obama should go along with the GOP leaders more frequently are all Republicans?! Of course, why wouldn’t they want that?!
Although I am a Canadian, I am with those that think Mr Obama should challenge the Republicans more. Enough of this Republican bullying of the people.
A while back, I said that if people were unhappy with how Mr Obama deals with the issues by caving to the GOP, then they should ‘coach’ him instead of criticising him. Tell him how you feel and make suggestions, well thought out logical suggestions based in fact as to how he can improve, how he can more effectively deal with the GOP. He needs to know that the people are behind him!
Lynn, we have been doing just that for almost three years in countless emails and petitions.
