The hostage crisis in which Republicans refuse to budge from their “our way or we kill the country” stance continues unabated. My first reaction to the Read Plan was to tentatively oppose it, but now that I know what it contains, I still consider it a cave in, because it contains no revenue enhancements, but I can live with it, because it safeguards Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The Boehner Plan is not only the old Republican plan in disguise, plus it preserves the option for Republicans to blackmail America again in the run up to a national election. Last night, two men gave news conferences. One told the truth; one lied.
With the deadline for raising the nation’s debt limit and prospects for financial-market panic now a week away, an impatient, frustrated President Barack Obama warned the nation Monday night that the partisan impasse risks “sparking a deep economic crisis, this one caused almost entirely by Washington.”
But House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, presenting the case for the Republicans, countered that “the solution to this crisis is not that complicated. If you’re spending more money than you’re taking in, you need to spend less of it.”
Obama and the Democrats should just accept the massive spending cut package pushed by the GOP, Boehner said — but Obama, he charged, “wants a blank check today.”
Obama’s 15-minute nationally televised address capped a day when Senate Democrats’ and House Republicans’ positions hardened, as each unveiled deficit-cutting plans Monday that showed the two sides remain sharply divided…

I found it ironic that Agent Orange claimed that Obama wants a blank check, when what Obama wants to do is pay for what Congress already spent, mostly during the Bush Regime. Raising the debt limit is completely unrelated to future spending, and the liar knows it. That was not Boehner’s only lie.
Ed Schultz covers Obama’s speech and Boehner’s lies. Then he interviews Bernie Sanders and Steve Israel.

Bernie is right: “The Democrats have compromised, compromises and compromised”
Boehner, on the other hand had to kiss the holy ring of Republican Party head, Rush Limbaugh, before he could even present his plan to his own caucus.
Why aren’t Republicans jumping on the Reid plan, when it has everything the said they wanted? There are two reasons. First, saving the country by any means other that a complete cave-in to cut, cap and amend, leaves Obama looking conciliatory and Republicans looking like the criminals they are. The second reason is more important. In the Ryan plan, Republicans threw granny under the bus and got caught red handed. They tried to take away her medical security, hand her a coupon, and cut her loose to fend for herself in the midst of a vicious insurance company feeding frenzy. America reacted so strongly that the only way Republicans can escape the stain of their greed is to force Democrats to harm Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.
Obama asked America to let Congress know how they feel. America’s response overwhelmed the servers and crashed Congress’ web site. Keep calling!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
The Teapublicans are trying to bully and blackmail the country into accepting their very one-sided plan. They are counting on the President to reject it, just so they can pin the resultant economic crash all over him to defeat him next year. This is a very diabolical and cynical game they are playing that will not end in electoral victory for them, but rather to completely needless suffering for the entire world. We are dealing with some very misguided, totally ignorant evil people here…
Yep.
Amen
Agreed.
I finally got through to -day, keep calling everyone. Thank you Tom.
Thank YOU Audrey!
I wonder, sometimes, why we even bother to listen to Boehner. He’s a typical Republbagger. How can you tell when they’re lying? Their lips are moving.
Only because I need to know which lie to debunk.
No he’s totally inept at his job and is way over his head. He can’t even get his own caucus to agree to what they want; he’s having a hard time holding it together.
At least he can remember his bar order
Something occurred to me that no one has even mentioned. If there is an “economic default” what would prevent the president from activating the “War and Emergency Powers” that are granted him under USCA Title 50?
Actually, I have included emergency powers in a couple recent posts. If he intends to do so, he has to wait until the actual emergency exists, and the worst thing he could do is announce it in advance, because it gives Republicans an excuse to continue their obstruction. I certainly hope that he does, if Republicans drive us ober the cliff.
Keep calling your congresspersons and senators! Their lines were pretty tied up last night.
Amen Patty!
Lines are still pretty tied up today– but keep calling– all we seem to be able to do–
Amen, Phyllis!
Why does anyone listen to these idiots?
That’s like listening to the excuses of a drunk driver after he killed someone.
The Republicans have zero credibility on spending cuts, or balance for a better economy.
Tom, as above, I listen to know which lies to tear apart.
Tom, you said: “Raising the debt limit is completely unrelated to future spending, and the liar knows it.” Maybe yes, maybe no. Boehner has been around the block long enough to know that but I am not sure that some of the tea Party idiots have a clue what this is all about.
But a wonderful comment that I read on another site: Boner is a goner.
Charles, I agree. Boehner is the liar to whom I was referring.
It the teabaggers – they don’t understand how government works and they don’t understand compromise. They want it all and they want it their way – kind of like toddlers.
Although to be fair, we have some like that on the left too, who want everything out way. People forget that the best possible outcome is rarely the best outcome.
