You may ask why I, as one who opposes war almost by definition, would want to celebrate the day in which we honor those military service people, who have given their lives in service to America. From my earliest days as an antiwar activist opposing the war in Vietnam, I have believed that it is as important to honor the warriors, as it is to oppose the wars.
They took an oath to obey and honored it. They had nothing to do with the decisions. I have no doubt that, if those who died in our Revolutionary War, for example, can look at todayβs wars, they are shedding tears over the senseless waste of life, but honoring their comrades as they fall.
Now, unlike Veterans day, Memorial Day is not intended as celebration of those who served and survived. Nevertheless, to all veterans who read this, thank you for your service. I thank God that you are not among those whom we honor today.

Tom as one who went to sea for this country I have said it before and will say it again, you who stood up were also fighting for freedom. which in my book counts you as a veteran as well.
Thank you Mark Now if only the VA would see it your way. π

No stripes? π
I feel exactly the way you do. People who serve are among the bravest in the country and today is the day we honor the fallen. May they rest in peace.
On that note, did you hear that evil Kasich, the governor of Ohio, refused a $5M grant from the fed for new prosthetics, and went to the VA and actually took them away from men and women wearing them? One man was so upset that he reached for security’s gun and shot himself in the skull. Others were fighting for the gun but luckily no one else was killed. What a sick bastard. It was on Huff Po, but now I can’t find the link. π‘
Lisa, how foul. I just googled this left and right, but found nothing. Nameless?
I understand your sentiments Tom. Applauding. I’ve not lost anyone in my family, to my best knowledge, since the Revolutionary War… yet most generations have served. Both my parents served in WW2. My little brother in first Gulf war and the beginning of the current conflict. I abhor war. I think it’s time we evolved beyond all this bloodshed and pursuit of money. I’m remembering that most today because I think until we remember that better, because until we do we going to continue to shed blood for illusory gains for others… the majority gain nothing.
On the another note;
catching up on Politics Plus! Good stuff ! π
Thanks Gwen. I fully agree,
My family has fought and died for America, every generation, since 1750. I’m grateful to them for our freedoms. They did not fight so that corporations could take from the poor and give to the rich. There will be other battle fronts, though not with weapons. They will be fought at the polls. in the courts and by men of good conscience in politics.
Blue. that’s an excellent point. The danger America faces from Al Dubya today could not be worse if it was a foreign attack.
