Yesterday, I overslept, having stayed up too late the day before, trying to get too much done. This week, I can handle that. I’m glad it wasn’t last week or next week. The weather was drk and cold, although without precipitation, which probably also contributed.

Mother Jones – I’m Moving to Portugal, See You Never
Quote – [I]n a lot of ways telecommuting chained workers to their offices even more by making sure that their work was always present, in their computers and in their cellphones. Something needs to get done late? It’s not waiting until you get back into the office. Your boss is going to email/Slack/text you tonight to do it…. Portugal is done with all of that.

Wonkette – Six Colorado High School Students Take Bullets For Gun Freedom
Quote – Monday afternoon, six teenagers were hanging out at Nome Park in Aurora, Colorado, across the street from their high school. For no reason anyone can yet determine, the teens were shot by gun-toting cowards who drove away after the sneak attack. The students, aged 14 to 18, were hospitalized with what the police describe as non-life-threatening injuries. However, one student required emergency surgery.
Click through for details, video, and summary of gun laws. Sadly, we have our share – matbe more – of crazies hereI can only speculate they are most active in Aurora and Boulder on the mistaken assumption there are no liberals in colorado Springs.

Reason – Cops Thought Sand From Her Stress Ball Was Cocaine. She Spent Nearly 6 Months in Jail.
Quote – The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled last week that two Atlanta police officers are not entitled to qualified immunity from a civil lawsuit brought against them by Ju’zema Goldring for malicious prosecution. Goldring says the officers falsely accused her of jaywalking and cocaine trafficking, based on a field test of a powdery substance inside a stress ball she had in her purse.

  1. Glad that you overslept…the change in the weather helps it along too. I’m feeling a little better…
Cartoon: The Holy Father does not look happy in this picture. His face speaks a thousand words.
MJ: How cool is this? Takes the load off of the workers and their families.
Wonkette: Hope that those kids at the park are safe and healthy. re: the  shootings. At schools: Yes, it is a national crisis. Still hasn’t gone away…I’ve not seen any here, pray it stays that way.  I feel bad when I read these stories. Yes, ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ in null and void..imho.
    FFT: Yep. They love this.

    • TJI #1 – This is in reference to VP Harris pronouncing the article the “thee” for wemphasis, as of course all normal people do.. And the other time it is pronounced :thee” is before a vowel. Try saying “the other time” while pronouncing it “thuh.” You probably won’t be able to The next thing they’ll ask about is whether she bakes cookies.
TJI #2 – And those who died have no one to blame but themselves. My sympathy goes to the survivors who did everything in their power to get their loved ones vaccinated and failed due to stupidity.
      TJI #3 – True that.
TJI #4 – Interesting. We’ll see. A big landowner as land commissioner doesn’t sound like the best idea, but there are exceptions.

  2. Comment from Mitch –

    Toon: Amen!
MJ: We can’t have nice things like that because we are still in thrall to the, very outmoded, Puritan Ethic…work ubber alles!Wonkette: As per GK of yesterday, this has to be laid at the feet of Dumpness!
Reason: Can’t open the page, but yes, at least she’s alive.  Guessing, by her 1st nme, she is black, I’m willing to bet that if she were white, nothing of this sort would have happened.
    FFT: Excellent!
    MItch D.

  3. Cartoon: Stand up for it Pope Francis, Way to go.
MJ: Hope the Portugal’s socialist can get this going. Will benefit the workers if they do.
Wonkette: Crazy to see more of these shooting. How many more is it going to take, before the start passing laws to ban carrying guns?
Reason: 6 months in jail, because these cops assumed the sand was cocaine. I take it that they’ll be facing a big law suit over that one. Glad the two Atlanta officers out getting off for that. Plus reading some of the other illegal acts by other officers, it’s despicable.
    Food for Thought: Good one.
Happy to hear that you got some extra sleep. Like Pat mentioned the time change plays such a big role, with the sun going down before 5 here.
Hope you have a nice day.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

  4. SoINeedAName UPDATE
Hello, everyone!  I miss you guys!
The tech guy came the other day and removed my PC’s hard drive, and yesterday he gave me:
    [1] Encouraging News and
    [2] Bad News
The encouraging news is that he’s almost positive he’ll be able to recover my data from the hard drive.
The bad new$ is I’ll $till have to purcha$e a new computer.  OUCH!
He said that the older computers Boot Drive stored the Operating System (OS) on a Hard Disc Drive (HDD) which has moving parts that eventually wear out.
They’ve been replaced by Solid State Drives (SSD) – although you can still use HDD to store documents, pics, music, etc.  The SSD is for the OS and your programs/apps.
I’m sure you’re all aware of the computer chip shortage across the board.  I suspect this will put some speedbumps in getting new equipment.
I’ve decided I’m going to get a new PC that I’ll spend time seriously vetting, and a laptop possibly off-the-shelf so I can do at least the minimum stuff at home, because I suspect I won’t get my bespoke PC for a month.  I’m at the library starting to do my “Due Diligence” vetting now.
The problem is that although I stored critical files on my MS OneDrive cloud, it doesn’t include an programs (like MS Office, Quicken, Norton, etc.).  And I don’t want to mess up the laptop until I’m ready to migrate my old data to the new computer.
Actually the tech guy is going to do that for me.  He go rave reviews on Angie’s List, and I used him ~ 5 years ago to salvage my broken External Hard Drive (EHD), and he was excellent.  Then again, at $100/hr. he should be!
So you can see I have my work cut out for myself.  But at least it’s nice to have a keyboard to use on a regular PC rather than typing on my cell.
Say a big “HELLO!” to everyone, and who knows – maybe I’ll get lucky and catch a break!
Not having a PC is like not wearing a watch – you don’t realize how often you look at your watch until you’re not wearing one!

    • SO  GOOD TO SEE YOU!  Even though the problem is not totally resolved.  Have you cnsidered a rebuild for the laptop?  That might help a little.  Personally, I have never owned a computer which I did’t purchse rebuilt.  And obviously, I have had very good luck.  I’m not surprised you wany  a new desktp, but if you aren’t going to be using the laptop as much, you might be able to save there.

    • Hello to you too, Nameless.
Happy to hear that things are moving forward for you, Nameless.
I’ve had my share of computer issues, especially with the laptop that broke two months ago. Joanne mentioned to me about buying one that was rebuilt too.  Since she mentioned that, I looked on Ebay for ones that were close to the Lenovo laptop that broke, but wonder, if I buy it whether just exchanging the hard drive that was in my broken one, would work?
I never used the app like you mention, the Cloud. It sounds handy and useful, but was worried about whether the data is protected?
Keep us posted. Best of luck, Nameless

      • If I understand you correctly, the hard drive is on good shape and working, but the external part or parts of the laptop are broken?  If you can find one without a hard drive, it can probably be moved, although most people would probably think it easier to just copy everything from the old to the new if you get a refurbished one which has a hard drive.    I just looked at Discount Electronics and they have between 2 and 12 each of 3 Lenovo laptopsand are asking a base price of $250 but they also offer extras which would increase the price if you want them.  I didn’t google “Lenovo laptop no hard drive” though, so there’s that.

My impression is that “The Cloud” is pretty safe.  I know at one point, people were advising anyone videotaping the police, for instance, to load the video to the cloud so that of they took your phone you would still be able to assces and share it from a different computer or phone.  I don’t consciously use it much, although I suppose there are times I use it and am not aware of doing to.

        • Thanks for the information Joanne.
As for the Cloud information, I get some space with Norton 360, but never set it up.
Yes the hard drive is in good shape.
I found ones on Ebay that do come with a hard drive. I take it that people bought newer ones and just want to sell their old ones.
I bought the special cord for transferring date from one device to another, when I bought the shell for using the hard drive as an external drive. So I could transfer like you mentioned.
I haven’t tried using the hard drive as an external one, because I was worried if I mess this one up, I’m in deep Sh*t.
I will check the website you listed too. I appreciate the info.
          Thanks Joanne

          • YVW.  I have some external hard drive which I bought as external hard drives basically to keep more space available on the main drive, and also to prevent data los if the main one goes out.  I love them.  But of course what I keep on them is not system files, but transferable files.  It’s good that there are so many options, since people are so different!

    • Good to see you back again, Nameless.

I won’t join in with advice on your computer, as this is based on Aussie experience and no good to you.

One thing though, I doubt whether the mother board of your laptop is “young” enough to handle putting in a new Solid State Drive. I wouldn’t bother going there.

    • Glad you are finding solutions for yourself Nameless and may they be speedier than you fear.

  5. If you overslept, then you must have needed the extra sleep time, Joanne.

Cartoon: I wouldn’t mind if that was made a rule in the next encyclic.

MJ: I’ve seen this proposed before but never saw it turned into a law. Excellent, but it should not be just for those working from home. For jobs at a certain (management) level and above, the contract often stipulates no overtime for work after the usual business hours and at the same time expects you to be available at all times. Middle management ends up working itself into the grave while having none of the perks of their CEOs.

Wonkette: Of course, this hardly makes the average news bulletin. Not enough deaths, the victims are just kids, the perpetrators probably are just kids too, offering prayers has become a thoughtless reflex, when has America last addressed gun control in a serious way?

Reason: WTF: “What’s more, she was left in jail for four months after a crime lab concluded that the mysterious powder was sand, not cocaine.” Two months in jail when bad, indiscriminate tests put her there and she couldn’t pay the bail, is one thing but letting her rot there for another 4 months? I keep my fingers crossed for Ju’zema Goldring in the hope she wins her civil lawsuit against the two police officers for malicious prosecution. If that ends well, the police force will have to settle the dispute with a substantial financial injection.

FFT: As usual, Betty Bowers is right on target again.

  6. Welcome back, Nameless!
