In Memory of TomCat

I never met TomCat in person, but I already feel his absence.

We met in cyberspace thanks to the now defunct Care2. Some of you may have been on that site, which started out as a click-to-donate suite and then expanded to include petitions, articles and editorials. I enjoyed contributing to Care2, signing and occasionally creating petitions, and making acquaintance with progressive and pro-ecology people from around the world. I watched sadly as Care2 degenerated and finally died except for The Petition Site. Fortunately, I have been able to stay in touch with many of my Care2 friends, including TomCat.

I have been following Politics Plus for a number of years. I relish reading the blog, seeing Tom’s latest cartoon, and watching the videos, especially the ones with Bill Maher or Beau. Clearly I made quite an impression on Tom since he invited me to join the site and contribute my own thoughts. I appreciate the supportive comments that I get for my Sound Off! essays.

Alas, there will be no more of Tom’s clever cartoons or observations. However, Politics Plus will continue thanks to Joanne Dixon and all who comment. I can think of no better way to remember TomCat and honor his memory than to keep Politics Plus going.

  1. One more fellow Woodstock attendee will no longer claw at the surface of the planet.  TomCat’s physical being will soon return to the soil thereof.  But, he leaves quite a wonderful legacy, which does not need detailing for those who are also a part of the community he created.  The existential psychiatrist, Irvin Yalom, who wrote about the meaning of life (“Momma and the Meaning of Life”), took it down to the concept of legacy.  TomCat leaves quite a legacy, in my view. I expect that the folks that his prison volunteering helped will not forget him, nor will we.
    He will be missed.
    Meow, Tom.

  2. Thanks, Freya.  I won’t be doing it alone, thankfully  Namelless, Squatch, and Lona will be helping, aling with you of course, and Colleen is doig some re-posting.  We have access to all his old cartoons in the library, (and I’ve already been drawing on that), and I sort of know how to make them, thugh I don’t have his wit.

  3. You’re right, Freya – Politics Plus will be Tom’s legacy, up to us to support Joanne, Lona, and the team they mobilise to keep the flame burning here.
Thank you, Joanne and friends for what you do – and what you will do.

    • Thsank you for that vote of confidence.  I know i hold myself accoountable to TomCat and to all of you readers ans commenters.  We will all do our best.

  4. thank you, Freya, well said….I am sure that the “kittens” that TomCat chose for the future of this site will keep his work, memory, and quality going hopefully forever…..we will miss TC, but he will live on for 9 lives or more in memory of those of us he touched…
