It’s a crazy day here in the CatBox.  My main nurse from Providence Home Health just called and will be here momentarily.  She just left, so I missed my morning nap.  Tomorrow is my big appointment  with my oncologist and that team, so please expect no more than a very brief Personal Update, as I leave at 7:30 AM.  Oh God, it’s Monday, AGAIN!

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:03 (average 5:46).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Remember what Bloody Bullseye Barbie (Sarah Palin) and the Republican Reich did to Gabby Giffords!

Trump* Virus Update:

0615TrumpVirusMap

Cases: 2,162,896
Deaths: 117,865
Recovered: 870,077

Short Takes:

From NY Times: Representative Denver Riggleman, a freshman Republican from Virginia, lost a bitterly contested primary race decided in an unusual drive-through state convention, weighed down by outrage among party activists that he officiated at a same-sex wedding.

In a result announced early Sunday, Bob Good, a former athletics official at Jerry Falwell Jr.’s Liberty University who describes himself as a “biblical conservative,” ousted Mr. Riggleman, a distillery owner and former Air Force intelligence officer with a libertarian streak. Mr. Good captured 58 percent of the vote in a convention held Saturday that was decided by roughly 2,400 party delegates, according to party officials.

Mr. Riggleman, as well as outside observers, denounced the setup — enabled by state laws that allow local party officials to choose congressional nominees by conventions instead of traditional primary elections — which has tended to benefit hard-line candidates.

This is why every Republican must go. Any time individual Republicans do something decent and proper, they get kicked out of the Reich.  RESIST!!

  1. what is so sad about trump virus disease is that we could have had so less if we had acted early and aggressively…..and if that had happened many might have even been able to say something nice about our evil ogre resident of the white house

  2. ‘Toon: Palin, being the kind of sicko she is, has been credited with opening the way for the other POS, known as dumpness!
TVU: Southern tier just bursting at the seams.  Florida doing in with new, record breaking numbers, daily, now.
    NYT: Too bad.
MSNBC: “Other options.”  If he were a white man I expect the cops would have tried at last one of them first.
    BFTP: A beautiful song.

  3. So tomorrow comes the news we have all been waiting for. No, I’m not expecting to hear it tomorrow – you’ll be exhausted. But maybe Wednesday. Prayers.

Well, well, well. A lot of punch in a 3-minute video. (The journalists’ name is Carey Wedler, and she also has a YouTube channel).

Upcoming New Yorker cover. “Say Their Names.”

Cartoon – Gabby’s husband, Mark Kelly, is polling well in his Senate bid against Martha McSally. But I wouldn’t take anything for granted.

Map – Goodness – what happened to Michigan and Massachusetts?

NYT – And this is related to Mark Kelly’s race, in that Martha McSally LOST (either a primary or a special for the other AZ Senate seat) but when the other seat became vacant she was APPOINTED by the Governor despite the fact the election had made it clear the peole did not want her. You are so right.

MSNBC – Heck, they could have taken him to s different Wendy’s for iced coffee while driving him home, not unlike Dylan Roof.

Past – So may other things have been making me weep lately, that this song no longer does. Like this –

    • Close my mouth.
THIS picture is worth a thousand words!! 20 20 20
I’m sure there are hundreds of other pictures too.
      Thank you, Joanne.

  4. Cartoon: Remember that day like it was yesterday. Horrible day! So thankful for Gabby and the others who survived the shooting.
TVU: Covid Update from June 12th:  Austin- 4,000. Houston-16,000. Dallas- 13,000. Bastrop-282. Dangit! I forgot what link I was on. I believe it’s close enough though. We’ve gone up, unfortunately.
NYT: Yes, I agree, the R’s need to be put in time out.  Such a disappointment for Mr. Riggleman.
MSNBC: How horribly sad…that this young man died by gunshot wounds to his back. Sickening !! Yes, it’s a clear and present danger….. every single day!
    BFTP: Great song!

Hope that your visit went well this morning, and Best to you tomorrow morning, to and fro, and for your appointment too. Rest and relax, take good care, and Thanks, Tom.

  5. Cartoon: Another day we wish never happened. Glad Gabby survived.
TVU: We had another 174 new cases. They’re already mentioning that they may have to shut down again, due to the consistent increases from opening too much so soon. Plus what disturbs me is the brainless leader who continues to say “face mask and social distancing” isn’t necessary.
NYT: Shame on the way the R’s work.
MSNBC: There was no reason to even shoot the flipping gun. He wasn’t threatening either one of the cops. This violence must come to a permanent stop NOW.
    BFTP: Great tune.
Hope you visit with your main nurse went well.
Good luck with your oncology  appointment tomorrow. I’ve been praying that your everything turns out well with your Scan you just had. Plus that you will be able to get in that one study.
    Take care.  Thanks TomCat

  6. The song – “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – comes from the 1945 Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway show, “Carousel”.

In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the protagonist Julie Jordan, sings “You’ll Never Walk Alone” to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, falls on his knife and dies after a failed robbery attempt.

Given the date, it was not uncommon for the audience to be filled with women who had lost their husbands, boyfriends, sons, uncles, brothers – you can imagine the effect.

And it was also able to transform “a man’s man” into “a blubbering snot factory”.  This I know first hand: In my youth I was in a semi-professional boys’ choir (~1955 to 1961).  This was one of our show-stoppers.  It does pack a punch!

[NOTE: You might want to fast forward to the 3:33 mark for the song]

    • And it is repeated at their daughter’s graduation, at the finale.  And, again, not a dry eye in the house.  I costumed the show once for a college production.  Renee Fleming sang the song at this year’s National Memorial Day Concert.

The show has kind of fallen out of favor because of its tolerance of domestic abuse.  And that’s OK.  But if we as a culture can come to see that tolerance as something to be resisted, which therefore makes the whole story sadder (or, even better, as something that was characteristic of the time but no longer exists – of course, that would have to be true; it wouldn’t help if it were just blindness) – it will be back.

  7. Good luck tomorrow; I hope everything goes well tomorrow, TomCat.

3:45 So many prizes and now he’s off to the slaughterhouse.

Cartoon: It could happen again any day.

Update: Please take all necessary precaution tomorrow, TomCat. It looks like COVID-19 cases are spiking again in Oregon.

NYT: Biblical Conservative, isn’t that a pleonasm? Anyway, this guy sounds double creepy and one would hope Denver Riggleman has learned his lesson and looks towards a party with which he has more in common.

MSNBC: By arresting Brooks almost out of the blue the two police officers escalated a situation that wasn’t even in need of de-escalation and got swept up in losing control of the situation and their own agitation about that. Who the hell trains these people?

BFTP: This is Liverpool’s football anthem, which might explain the video a bit. Even if not a soccer fan, Europeans will have heard this song at some time when Liverpool played in some final or other, and honestly, hearing half a stadium sing this song with all its heart is quite impressive.

  8. Thanks and Hurry Hugs to all! 26

  9. As an Atlanta resident I was particularly horrified and angered by the death of Rayshard Brooks. OK, he shouldn’t have resisted arrest – but he didn’t deserve to die from being shot in the back. In the back! How cowardly! On the other hand, was it necessary to burn down the Wendy’s? However, there is now evidence this was not the work of a protester or protesters, but possibly of a right-winger hoping to make the BLM/Antifa people look bad.

    • I tend to assume that arson like this is the work of white RWNJs.  I’m not always correct, but I am enough that I find it reasonable to start with that assumption.
