No doubt everyone is busy recuperating from Thanksgiving activities or shopping or just enjoying a long Holiday weekend, so this will be very brief.

Have you ever seen more pumpkins in one place?

Me neither.  It’s a Bing wallpaper shot that I got from “Daily Picture” option.  It was taken in Columbia County in Pennsylvania – but that’s as much as I know.

PROLOGUE

OK, seems pretty clear I’ve created a “Failure to communicate …”

The YouTube Video has absolutely NOTHING to do w/ cooking a turkey.

It’s an O-P-T-I-C-A-L   I-L-L–U-S-I-O-N … that’s the POINT!

I’m not talking about the pros/cons of brining or roasting or grilling or smoking …

It’s about an OPTICAL ILLUSION!

*sigh*

And here’s a timely optical illusion for Thanksgiving involving a turkey from a regular cooking show that will make your head spin.

First, I would strongly encourage you to make the video full-screen.

Then you can watch from the beginning or just skip to the 1:50 mark and then continue to stare only at the swirling brine he just stirred.

  1. Cross posted to Care2 HERE

    • A fellow named Venetucci used to have world class pumpkin patches here in Colorado Springs, but he passed away (saddening children all over the Pikes Peak Region.)

      No comment on the brine.

I will get something up tomorrow, but right now I don’t know what or when.

      • [1] Check your email, please

[2] Did you watch the brine?

I almost always watch all YouTube videos from their site, and not ones posted in a article or comment.  And almost always watch them full-screen.  This one made a significant difference WRT the optical illusion watching full-screen.

        • 1) Brief response on the way

          2) I did increase the screen size; I’ll try again.  Brine is pretty controversial among foodies and I didn’t want to get into that (there are IMO more important controversies)

Just looked again … I’m sorry, I’m not seeing it.

  2. NO news is good news!!!
Lovely shot of Columbia County in Pennsylvania!

    TY

  3. PS: Yes, I had a very, very delightful TGD with the family.

I didn’t get the drumstick I was hoping for (I was next to last in the buffet line of the 18 people there, so not surprising).  But I did get a wing and it was more than enough.

I don’t mind saying that the Pumpkin Pie Cake I brought (from the host’s deceased wife’s recipe – a bit dicey since his new girlfriend lives w/ him after a second failed marriage) was absolutely delicious!  And so much easier – AND tastier – to make then a regular pumpkin pie.

Definitely a keeper of a recipe!

  4. I’ve never used brine in cooking my turkey. Mine was 25 lbs this year, and it was delicious, with some leftovers to take home too, nice get-together. Smallest one that I’ve cooked though this year, usually I get 30+. NO brine, though. lol

Now that’s a lot of pumpkins! Gorgeous countyside!  My mother used to make homemade pumpkin pies, so this brings back memories for me. Fun to paint, and fun to cut up too.

Having been raised in the NE, I remember visiting places like this with family, years ago, and interestingly enough, besides the beautiful landscape that you featured here, it also has quite a few covered bridges to drive over, or view. I love autumn. Ahhh…the memories!

    Thanks, Nameless for post, and
    Joanne for cross-posting.

    • Maybe I’m overstepping here, but the YouTube video involving brining has absolutely NOTHING to do with cooking a turkey.

It ONLY involves the setup to induce the optical illusion.

While watching the swirling brine I kept thinking it was going to be one of those scary “MONSTER SCREECH” popups – but it’s not.

It’s strictly a legit optical illusion watching the swirling brine and then the transition change.

I did NOT expect that at all!

Would like to find some scientific background WRT what causes it, but haven’t had the time to look into it.

      • Thanks, Nameless, for correcting my ‘foo pah’.
Enjoy reading your posts. Keep ’em comin’ !!

BTW…hoping that TC is feeling better!!!

  5. No turkey for me until Christmas, and even then it often is a smoked ham straight from the butchers. Only a few reckless will stand in a summer heatwave and overlook the smoking of their turkey. With fire dangers at the max Aussies can’t risk leaving their barbies alone for too long.

Loved that pumpkin patch, though. Such a wonderful picture of autumn colours. Thanks for posting, Nameless.

  6. I had a fairly good Thanksgiving. No family close, so I went to a tavern and enjoyed a nice Turkey Day buffet. Great salad and mac & cheese, though the pumpkin pie left a little to be desired.

I’ve seen that optical illusion before. It’s all in how the swirl stimulates your retina, so it overcompensates one the still picture appears.

Let TomCat know he is in the thoughts and prayers of many Care2 peeps. I’ll keep sending healing vibes.

  7. Hello all this is an update from Wendy. Tom has been out of circulation for the last few days wanted to let everyone know that I had to take him to the hospital for admittance on Thanksgiving day. Tom is doing well and he is where he needs to be but is Recovering from a respiratory infection. He asked that no one spend any money on him please… He will be in the hospital probably till the beginning of next week. I will try and keep you updated all of your thoughts and prayers are appreciated

    • This message was in pending which I just released.  I have copied it over to your TC Update and will also add it to a OT for later today.

      • Thank you, Wendy for your info re: Tom. you’re a Blessing!  Hope that he’s feeling better.
        Thanks, Lynn for commenting too.

  8. Sorry Nameless but I don’t get the optical illusion.  I watched the whole vid too.  I am a turkey fan but I would never cook a whole bird for myself.  It is easier to go out.

The pumpkin patch is great . . . I just wish pumpkins were purple.
