I just arrived home from my medical appointment. I’ll have the fasting lab results in a few days. Otherwise, everything is good, except that the heat is back. ARGH!

I love it in theory, but I’ve used all those techniques in practice and found that the more non-threatening I am, the more hostile Republican base goose-steppers become. I think that there is a level of brain-washing past which Republican intellects, if any ever were present, shut down. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!! 85 DAYS!!

Reich – yes, you’re right. I can’t get through either. But he has made it work for him on trips through rural areas, including the midwest. I can’t help thinking part of that is that, being so insulated, they have no idea who he is, so they don’t have preconceived ideas about what he will say. With our friends and family, we don’t have that advantage to use. Even in comments on blogs, people get to know other usernames fast. (Plus, Trump supporters won’t read long comments – too hard.)

It’s usually good to be non-confrontational – at first – but sometimes you just plain have to “grow a pair.” No amount of sweet-talking and waving olive branches is going to make extremists back off. We liberals all need to take a course in spine stiffening. No more Mr. Nice Guy/Ms. Nice Gal!
Have Republicans ever sold anything other than political or economical snake oil for the past 40 years?
I am not confrontational with politics, however; I do talk about my personal concerns that affect me or my family, and with my little circle of friends. The elephants in the room, (when they’re here) are usually tolerant of my views, as they know how I feel about issues that bother me to the core, and the current state we are in, as a population, and a Nation. They (R), don’t offer a remedy to my concerns either, that is effecting them also. Unfortunately, it’s a stalemate where I am, as I’m in deep red country here.

Robert Reich: I think you’re right, TomCat, to engage in a discussion (sorry, I hate the way “conversations” have rendered a perfectly adequate “discussion” completely useless while also denying people the possibility of having a simple talk about all sorts of things in life) and find common ground it is necessary that people remain open-minded and willing to listen.While there are undoubtedly lots of people on the left who aren’t doing a too good job at it either, Drumpfians seem to abhor that common ground and close off completely when they feel themselves sliding towards something that could look like agreement.

I have the same problem as you, TC, when I try to talk to some of my GOP friends. They are so brainwashed by Fox news that they no longer have an true opinion or grasp on reality.

Robert Reich — I agree with Reich but with one caveat . . . as long as people are respectful, thinking and honest. (Or is that three caveats!) Drumpfians could never meet those caveats because they are enthralled by the chief snake oil huckster, Drumpf. Anybody who is truly thinking has to realise that Drumpf is a pathological liar, and Republicans are right there with him, enabling and contributing to the lies that have become the core of the Republican platform.
