It’s been a long, long time since the last time Democrats had anything major to celebrate on election day. In NJ, the Reich that Pignocchio built is history. and in Virginia, Democrats won all the major offices. Also, they might still flip control op the House of Delegate in spite of the Republican Gerrymandering that the court is about to redistrict, before 2018.
THE BIG IDEA: Tuesday was the best day for Democrats politically since Barack Obama won reelection in 2012. Remember, conservatives scored significant victories in the November 2014, 2015 and 2016 elections. Democrats desperately needed some wins after they went all-in on a House special election in Georgia this spring and lost. Last night, they got them.
Voters came out in droves. They braved the rain and the cold to send a message to President Trump. The results across the country represent nothing less than a stinging repudiation of Trump on the first anniversary of his election.
— Democrat Ralph Northam was elected governor of Virginia Tuesday by an unexpectedly large margin of nine percentage points. He won more votes than any previous candidate for Virginia governor.
Republican Ed Gillespie could not escape Trump’s unpopularity, despite his best efforts to thread the needle. Four in 10 Virginia voters yesterday approved of the job that the president is doing, according to preliminary exit polls. Gillespie received over 9 in 10 votes from Trump approvers, but among the larger group of Trump disapprovers, Northam had nearly as large an advantage: 87 percent.
Trump’s impact on the race was also clear from other questions in the exit polling: 34 percent of voters said expressing opposition to Trump was a reason for their vote, with almost all of this group favoring Northam, per our in-house pollster Scott Clement. Half as many (17 percent) sought to express support for the president, while 47 percent said Trump was not a factor in their choice.
— Women made the difference. White women with college degrees — a group that split evenly in the 2013 Virginia governor’s election — favored Northam by 16 points over Gillespie in preliminary exit polling, 58 percent to 42 percent. Northam’s margin is more than twice as wide as the margin Hillary Clinton won those voters by last year, 50 percent to 44 percent.
Married women voted for Northam by 10 points according to preliminary exit polls, 54 percent to 44 percent. In the 2016 presidential election, Trump eked out a one-point lead with this group, 48 percent to 47 percent. Married women consisted of 30 percent of Virginia voters this year, about the same share as in 2016 and 2014. (Check out our interactive exit poll graphic here.)… [emphasis original]

I was very pleased that a trans candidate put the pig that authored the infamous bathroom bill on the unemployment line.
Kudos to Danica Roem.
Finally, where do we go from here? That’s up to you.
RESIST THE REPUBLICAN REICH!!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Break out the brooms and the champagne! Let us hope that this is the bellwether of a political bloodbath.
AMEN!!!
You are not the only person who is pleased about Danica! People are doing happy dances all over the Internet about her (of course, there are also the ones that are whining “How are we going to tell our children?” You know, I remember Christine Jorgenson, and I don’t remember having any difficulty understanding what had happened. It did get me a little hung up on surgery being a necessary part of it, but I think I’m over that.)
Thanks especially for quoting from WaPo. I am over my article limit right now so it was good to see some of their take.
P.S. Massachusetts had a trans state legislator first, but Danica is the second, and certainly the first in Virginia, or anywhere in the South.
KUDOS to all the WINNERS!!! So proud, and so very happy!!!!
Bask in the glory!!
WOO HOO!!
I remember Christine Jorgensen too. I just did a bit of research and found that she was born in my home town, Da Bronx, and I was just 9 y/o when she had the operation. It sounded like science fiction, but according to a letter she sent soon after the operation, she was finally her real self, and so happy.
Danica sounds so authentic and real, and down to earth!
Now, if only Roy Moore can be taken down, on Dec.12th, this will be an even more amazing year!
I think Roy Moore will be a tougher nut to crack, but still doable if people listen to Danica Roem about the “how”.
Here’s an article on Daily Kos about the Moore-Jones matchup. The meat is in the comments, really. One commenter, who lives in a small red town in northern Alabama says the yard signs are running almost ten to one for Jones, something which has never happened before. Another, close to the end when I read it, points out that a loss for Moore is a win for “establishment” Republicans, who are terrified of what they are seeing. David Nir is the head guy on the Daily Kos elections team, which puts out info on electability (on both side) and predictions (as well as post-mortems).
Kudos to all blue voters in Virginia, but especially to all women voters. Smart women are going to show America the way!
AMEN!!!
Knowing that the election was coming, and reading the e-mails etc that said the race for the Virginia governor was very close, I was heartened to hear in the radio news that Dems won the day. Now to hear that in Virginia the spread was 9 points, — WOW!!!
Excellent piece from Lawrence. Danica listened to her constituents and won the day.
KUDOS!!!
There was no silence in Virginia! Let’s hope that Virginia is the seer in 2018!
Thanks and sick hugs.
