The phrase, "Let them eat cake." was falsely attributed to Marie Antoinette as a statement of contempt for the poor, who had no bread to eat. Even though she never actually said it, that same attitude is alive and well in today’s Republican Party. Typically, Rep. Adrian Smith [R-NE] made it clear that he thinks the poor have no right to eat by the way he kept ducking the question.
A Nebraska Republican refused to say whether all Americans were entitled to food.
Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) appeared Saturday on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” where he discussed farm subsidies and food stamps, which both would be cut under a budget proposed by President Donald Trump, reported The Hill.
Host Scott Simon asked Smith “bluntly” whether he believed every American was entitled to eat, but the lawmaker refused to give a straight answer.
“Well, they — nutrition, obviously, we know is very important, and I would hope that we can look to —” Smith said.
Scott cut him off and reminded the lawmaker that living creatures died without food…

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I could probably do a whole comment on "Let them eat cake" (was it really cake, what would it have meant really had she said it, which she didn't), but history's most maligned woman prior to hillary Clinton deserves to rest in peace.
Adrian Smith is the real story here. I am surprised he didn't "righteously" quote "He who will not work, neither shall he eat," which, somewhat ironically, was not a reference to the poor and disabled, but to those who didn't want to invest any effort into propping up a world that was about to end any minute – far more like today's Republicans than like anyone else alive today. I think Adrian Smith needs to wash out his mouth with soap after swishing all that BS around in it.
Why??????? do "We need to tighten our belts" (nasty video playing in my head, as people slowly starve) in this kind of area????? Why can't we do so in the pentagon budget, which is greater than the defense budget of numerous other countries all taken together? I expect there are many other areas that could take a little tightening, so that we could give still more to the suffering already wealthy. Compassion on both sides? "Compassion" is a response to suffering that includes a wish to help. We need to "help" the already wealthy? The already wealthy are already wealthy because of the boons they have received from being a part of this society, culture, and, I suppose, in this Mr. Smith's view, they have no incentive, no reason, to pay back to the culture that has fed them? "Hey, you know, those who are in danger of starving are there because they "deserve" it, AND hey, you know, they are not apt to vote for Republicans, anyway, so……..screw them."
The other thing he misses when he talks about "compassions for taxpayers" is that EVERYONE is a taxpayer – down to the very poorest who only pay sales taxes. I make little enough not to pay income tax, but I pay property taxes, sales taxes, and heaven knows what else. You pay taxes too. Where's the compassion for US?
I'm (not) amazed at how low…..these guys can go.
Yea, nothing like jumping on the repug bandwagon, and NOT worrying or helping our folks in need!
Yup, al those starving poor really could show a little compassion with all those farmers and shouldn't whine when they get their food stamps or meals on wheels cut to give those Republican voting farmers what is their due. Mr. Smith sure looks after his own well, doesn't he. He'll just need to practice his "balanced" talk a bit more, because now the BS that comes out of his mouth leaves us with the strong impression that food stamps are a luxury people can do without, the air is sustenance enough for them. Indeed the air where those people who depend on help is so polluted they can cut it with knife and fork.
All the Republicans that I know insist the poor could change their situations if they worked harder. I have given up on them
they will never change.
I wonder how Smith's constituents feel about his words. Did he hold a townhall recently and get booed? Or did he just not bother.
The Declaration of Independence, a dearly held document of the US, states:
Smith, and I dare say all Republicans, needs a course in American history, specifically the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. What constitutes "Life"? At the very least bread and water (not of the penal variety), in other words food and drink. This is an inalienable right.
Resist and Persist!!!
"Let them eat cake" reminds me of Ivanka Trump's own website posting a totally, 100% tone-deaf list of "How To Celebrate Memorial Day"
Someone took the time to Tweet the perfect response to Ivanka's "Champagne Popsicles" suggestion:
I read about the champagne popsicles but wasn't masochistic enough to seek them out. Thank you fordoing it so I didn't have to, and for the perfect response indeed.
Great minds fall in the same ditch.
This was toi be Short Take #2, bit I saw yours in time to plug in Andy instead.
Thanks all. Hugs!
