It’s Not Just the South

Often times, many northerners, like me, slip into the habit of considering extreme racism as a mostly Southern problem.  Sadly, it just isn't true.  My NJ father was such an extreme racist that he would have considered Rump Dump a moderate.  It's mostly a Republican problem.  The only difference between Rump Dump and other Republican politicians and pundits is that he comes out and says what they merely reflect with their policies and dog whistles.  Check these Massachusetts Republicans out.

USA-ELECTION/TRUMP

A Massachusetts convoy of Trump supporters drove from Wrentham to Foxboro in their trucks, RVs and SUVs on July 31 and were caught on tape spewing racist epithets and calls for anti-black violence.

“Lynch the ni**ers by their d*cks!” said one driver, according to Winning Democrats, which highlighted a YouTube video of what the “Make America Great Again” convoy talked about on its CB channel when they thought no one was listening.

“Burn every single ni**er!” said another driver.

“All I know is we got plenty of trees to hang ni**ers from,” said another.

The convoy drove five miles from one township to another with their U.S. and Confederate flags waving…

Barf Bag Alert!!

If you've ever been to MA, you'll recognize that accent.  These were not Southern imports.

As convenient as it is to consider Trump the disease, he is not.  Trump is just a symptom of what the Republican Party has become.  They need to go the way of the Whigs.

  1. No, it's not an exclusive 'Southern' issue, but in the south there are large numbers gathered together, and there has been for a very long time. In other areas the racism and bigotry seems to be isolated pockets and groups. That's just my opinion, of course. Also, I live in New Mexico where most racism is directed at Latinos and Native Americans, ~ probably because there really isn't a large Black population.

I have witnessed and experienced racism from time to time, but never the extreme violence and hateful rhetoric we seem to see in other places, ~ especially the south and metropolitan areas where there is a large African American population.

All that aside ~ we don't need someone like Trump encouraging and accepting racist behavior.

  2. Yes, I did see this this morning, and yes, they are mostly, definitely, from Massachusetts, or at least NOT from the South (Except the singer of the National Anthem sounded southern to me.)  It's not just the attitudes that seduce one into thinkig that they are Southern, were it not for thw voices, but the fact they they are using CB RADIO!  Well, maybe that's not so much Southern as just rural.  But John Adams – and maybe even more John Quincy – are spinning in their graves, aren't they?  And maybe we should pitch in to send Elizabeth Warren some Kleenex or hankies.

I didn't actually see much Confederate stuff – some, yes, but mostly American flags (and if that isn't desecration I don't know what is) – and some I couldn't identify (does turquoise skivvies poking out of someone's pants could as a flag? – but the second most popular seemed to be the yellow rattlesnake.  Wow.  Does that ever fit.

  3. Unfrigginbelievable the way that Rump Dump Drumpf has given a voice to the most hateful part of America!!! To think that people STILL think this way is beyond belief! He is the embodiment of the racist thread that is always been running through the American conversation. Drumpf be damned! There are still way more of us than there is of them! We have to GET OUT THE VOTE!!! No matter what else we have to do in November 8th, VOTING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! PLEASE, help whoever you can to get to the polls and for America's sake, VOTE BLUE !!!

  4. Very scary and sad!

    Thanks, Tom.

  5. I grew up in northern Illinois – but can still remember a well-attended George Wallace rally in our city.

Racism may have varying degrees of occurrence – but there are NO pure place in America.

  6. "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"

Attentively listening, some even singing the national anthem, but one has to wonder how these idiots can sing the last line of the anthem and mean it.  Racism denies freedom to those at whom the racism is directed.  I guess I am assuming they can think which is really silly of me since they are Drumpfbots!  And Drumpf is no different.  He espouses such racism, bigotry and hatred . . . clearly he does not understand the national anthem.

My mother's father lived in an Archie Bunker type neighbourhood in Buffalo, NY.  He was a racist and bigot who I grew to detest when his racism became overt.  I won't go into specifics, but people from anywhere can be racists and bigots

  7. Thank you, TC, for sharing this.  I have said this on here many times, racism is every where, not just the south, and I saw more of it when I lived in northern states than I see here.  Trump has released those who are truly racist to say anything they please, he has made it acceptable for them.  My mother, who is a product of Tennessee and Virginia is a prime example of a non racist southerner.  Last week, when she was in the ER for the third time in three months, she asked an ER doctor, who was from Nigeria, if he looked in the mirror much.  He was taken aback, but said,
"no, not really".  She said, "you should, you are so pretty".  He said " that is not what I was expecting to hear" and laughed.  My sister and I sighed with relief, because she has dementia, and we never know what she will say.  He told me later that evening that she had made his day. She still has an eye for a good looking man!

    • How nice.  Made his day – and probably gave you and sister a lift as well.  Your Mom raised you and siblings well, and it shows.

      • Thanks, Joanne.  I have always been proud to be her daughter.  She and my grandmother were liberated before most women knew the word.

  8. There are disgruntled people who feel entitled to more than they can provide for themselves everywhere and who use their disdain/dislike/hatred (take your pick) of some minority – any minority – to make them feel good about themselves and give themselves a sense of belonging and being accepted by a group. It's not restricted to the South, nor is it to America; sadly we see this to some extend all around the world and all are spurred on by the (far) right. However, America is the only Western country that may soon have a president that is elected by millions because he has become their mascot, their spokesman and their excuse to unleash their hatred.

Even if Drumpf doesn't make it to the White House, America will need a long time to undo the damage that Drumpf has already done by allowing people to let loose all their pent up anger and hatred, instilled in them by Republicans, and destroy any semblance of unity and equality that America might have had before he appeared.
Drumpf has been a catalyst of the worst kind.

  9. Thanks all!!  Hugs!!
