A Close Win for Bernie

Last night I watched one of the best debates I have ever seen.  It was hard fought from beginning to end. If you missed the debate last night, I have the complete video and transcript for you  I think Hillary was the winner on foreign policy, but Bernie was the winner on domestic policy and the economy.  This is how much.

0205Debate

Hillary Clinton appeared frustrated.

Dozens of prominent economists and academic experts have endorsed her plans to regulate the financial sector. Her policies would “try to prevent the problems of the future,” she explained in Thursday’s debate, in addition to reining in “the excesses of Wall Street.”

So why do so many voters not believe it?

Throughout the debate, Mrs. Clinton found herself cornered by Senator Bernie Sanders and the moderators about her ties to Wall Street, the political contributions that have bolstered her campaign account, and the hundreds of thousands of dollars in paid speaking fees she received from Goldman Sachs and other financial firms in the months after she left the State Department.

Mrs. Clinton tried again and again to explain that her plans for Wall Street would be tougher and go further than Mr. Sanders’s proposals by also regulating the shadow banking industry, the insurance companies and other wrongdoers.

“I have a broader view,” Mrs. Clinton said, contrasting her plan to that of Mr. Sanders, whose anti-Wall Street message has turned him from a long-shot candidate to a serious contender for the Democratic nomination… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

While the Gray Lady was clearly attempting to plug their choice, Hillary, even they could not cover up the fact that the audience wasn’t buying part of what she had to say.  On one occasion, they even booed here for attacking Bernie.

If you missed the debate, here’s the complete video,

If you prefer, here is the full transcript.

In my opinion, the biggest difference was that, while hammering on his points, Bernie remained gracious, while Hillary let her frustration get the better of her.

What say you?

  1. I haven't watched it or read it yet.  I understand more are being scheduled, though.  If PBS has one next Thursday, as their schedule now reads, I may watch it.  I absolutely agree with you that tone is very, very important, especially at this stage, but really, all the way up to November, and beyond.  And I'm glad to have your opinion that Bernie remained gracious, which I value highly.  One huge strength of the Obama presidency has been his ability to remain gracious in the face of probably the worst barrage of hatred that any President has ever had to endure.

  2. Thanks for your perspective TC, which is similar to what WA Po and others had to say.  And Bernie outraised her in Jan., too………….

  3. Loved the debate and have to agree with your overall assesment.

  4. TC: "What say you?"

I say there are two civil, intelligent, responsible adults who want to be President … and they're BOTH Democrats!

  5. I would be more willing to believe Clinton on regulating Wall Street if she had not taken hundreds of thousands of dollar personally from them.  These are not campaign donations.  These are monetary payments directly to her.  Some might call them bribes…but I won't go,that far.

she had to know that these payments would be a campaign issue, yet she took the money anyway.  It shows you where her priorities are.

    I'm just sayin'!

  6. Agree with you on all points, Bernie is the winner in my book!

Thank you, Tom for in-depth analysis of the debate.

  7. Did not see it, probably won't see any others.  Not that I don't apprecite your evaluations, TC.

  8. Didn't watch it, but appreciate the transcript!

    Thanks, TC!!

  9. I believe she thought she had it locked up and is rattled at how well Bernie is doing.  Glad he was gracious to her, which is more than can be said of her towards him.

  10. Thanks for the video, TomCat, but even more for the analysis as I won't have time to see it in its entirity. If the debate had gone any differently, that would have meant that Hillary had gone through quite a transformation and that that would have been unreal. You can take a candidate out of Wall Street but you can't take Wall Street out of a candidate, or something like that.

That Bernie didn't score all that well on foreign policy didn't surprise me – for example I don't agree with his position on Israel, although  I can understand where it is coming from – but as a foreigner that is something that has my full attention. Hillary seems to hide her hawkishness a bit these days, but I believe it to be no more than that: hiding. And like many others it seems, I don't think she's really going to reign in Wall Street, not when she makes it into the White House.

  11. I haven't had a chance to watch the debate yet but I'll take your word.  If Hillary gets bent out of shape with a debate, and Bernie remains calm and gracious, who do you think will do better under fire in the White House?

    Go Bernie!

  12. Thanks all!  Hugs!

  13. A gentleman vs a less gentle lady. One honest from the heart and not for sale, the other not so much!

Perhaps the better slogan in the beginning of his campaign should have been "give her hell", instead of "give 'em hell"… 😉 (just thinking aloud)
