Yesterday morning I reached Store to Door.  Someone had misplaced my grocery order, so it had not been filled.  They had not called, because they were gone by the time I called them, and they had not realized there was an order to call about.  They had just found my order and were very apologetic.  hey did an emergency shop for me and delivered mf food around noon.   After I put them away, I slept fore the rest of the day and night.  I’m feeling groggy, but relieved.    We have three more days of very hot weather forecast: high 80°s today and 90°s Saturday and Sunday.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:37 (average 4:42).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: By easing tensions with Cuba and now Iran, President Obama is “recklessly squandering America’s precious supply of enemies,” the leader of a conservative think tank said on Tuesday.

“Our adversarial relationships with Cuba and Iran took years of frostiness and saber-rattling to maintain,” Harland Dorrinson, the executive director of the Washington-based Institute for Infinite Conflict, said. “Thanks to the President, decades of well-crafted hostility have been thrown out the window.”

According to Dorrinson, fears abound in conservative circles that the President might be “capriciously casting about for other powder kegs to defuse” during his remaining time in office.

“If his shameful record is any guide, he’ll probably try to disarm North Korea,” Dorrinson said. “That’s the doomsday scenario.”

Oh Andy!! Down with that Kenyan!! If world peace were to break out, it would destroy the Republican party, who need hostility to feed the fires of hate and fear.

From Upworthy: Business can thrive on kindness.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about Rosa’s, check out our interview with Wartman. And of course, pay it forward and pass it on.

Click through to see how well this wonderful company has done, since Upwsorthy first told their story back in March. Isn’t this better than how Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians use their businesses to propagate hatred?

From NY Times: A 24-year-old Kuwaiti-born gunman opened fire on a military recruiting station on Thursday, then raced to a second military site where he killed four United States Marines, prompting a federal domestic terrorism investigation. Three other people, including a Marine Corps recruiter and a police officer, were wounded, according to law enforcement officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the gunman, who also died Thursday, as Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, who became a naturalized United States citizen and went to high school and college in Chattanooga. Although counterterrorism officials had not been investigating Mr. Abdulazeez before Thursday’s shooting, federal officials familiar with the inquiry said that his father had been investigated years ago for giving money to an organization with possible ties to terrorists.

At a late night news conference, F.B.I. officials said that thus far they did not have “anything that directly ties” the suspect to international terrorist organizations.

For now, there is not enough public information about this terrible crime for me to comment, but I would like to say two things. The Republican attempts already springing up misuse this tragedy to generate hatred against Muslims in general are shameful. I offer condolences, thoughts and prayers for the surviving victims, their families and the families of the slain heroes, and all who loved them.  Please join me in that.

  1. Powerful cartoon that speaks volumes.

The common sense gun policy organizations point out the deaths are attributable to not following common sense in the rules without there being any need to link it to terrorism.  Thus far it appears that there is insufficient evidence for that claim, yet I have no doubt some media who don't wait for evidence are doing so…sigh.  I wish they knew it makes it harder on the families and wouldn't choose to hurt them more in this way.

That Pizza Shop is wonderful.  Other restaurants do something similar, but don't seem to have set things up to take donations to make the giving bigger like this one has.

AB makes excellent points, per usual.

Glad you have food on hand.  I'm to have that kind of weather for at least 15 more days.

  2. So it was an honest mistake by Store to Dore and they did everything possible to rectify it. That must have taken a load of your mind in more than one way, TomCat. No wonder you slept so long to compensate. Now you're all set again to toughen out a new heat wave; good luck to you.

The New Yorker: Andy's on a roll here, again a brilliant yet extremely funny analysis of the way Republicans have been thinking for decades. Warmongering is their raison d'être and if you take their enemies away one by one, they might actually have to do some governing and then it'll soon come to light how terrible they are at that because they're only the mouthpieces of the men who have their hands up the Republican buts. Beware, though, if Republicans lose too many of their external enemies, the last bit of veneer comes off and the GOP will find it's enemies internally. It is already picking the replacements from minorities (immigrants, black people, LGBT people, socialists…)

Upworthy: That video and the message it send, really made my day, TomCat. You know I've been feeling grumpy all day (Friday) but now my day is drwawing to a close, this inspiring and hopegiving video has lifted my spirits and made me smile. The world is not all bad, and compassion can be found in little things like a $1 slice of pizza and a postit note, it's as simple as that sometimes.

NY Times: What a horrible deed, my heart goes out to the victims and their family. Sad to know that the murder of these people will be used by the Republicans and the NRA to spin their own special brand of reality from it. The timing with the Iran deal couldn't be more opportune for them.

Cartoon: This is why I only drink a little green tea.

  3. 4:21 (average 4:42)  Ah, a DYC – as a friend whose father specialized in taxonomy would have said – a "damn' yellow compositae."  Obviously, they aren't all yellow throughout, but they all apparently have some yellow somewhere.

I had to go shopping myself today.  I didn't get everything on my list – I am limited to what I can get into two rolling boxes unless I have help – but I am not considering green beans and ice cream any more for  while LOL.  I noticed it was pretty warm – my car thermometer said 89-90 (F) – so I just checked the forecast – high 80's today and tomorrow, 75 Sunday, then 2 days of low 80's.  Actually, this is warmer than it ever got last summer (which I considered a disaster).  However, it's cooler than the years we had the fires.

New Yorker – I say, GO OBAMA!  Don't worry about the Repubs.  They'll just turn their hostility on us (like with Planned Parenthood) or we might even get lucky and have them turn it on each other, as Hairball is.

Upworthy – I'd write a longer comment, but I seem to have something in my eye.

NY Times – Well, so much for the good guy with the gun preventing gun violence.  If anyone knows how to use guns, it's Marines.  I even had to learn (in my position I might be transporting cash – I think I did so once in ten years, but I still had to train and keep up the skills.)  As far as the GOP using this to foment hatred – yeah, it's who they are.  I certainly join you in condolences, thoughts and prayers.

    Cartoon – Tea.  It's what's for delusions.

    • I have apparently already read my 10 free articles for the month, so I know no more details, and I suppose there might be something mitigating, bu without knowing more this made me furious:

A brush fire broke out in the Cajon Pass this afternoon, closing at least three lanes of the 15 Freeway in both directions. A drone flying near the blaze forced crews to abandon air drops, which would mark the third time in a matter of weeks that firefighters have been grounded because of the devices.

      • I wonder why it never stops me.  I get the headlines in email, but do not subscrove to the paper.  It never blocks my access.

        • It seldom blocks me either.  Ten articles is really pretty generous.  This month I know I over-used it early in the month and expected the block, just didn't know when.

  4. 3:24  Flowers for the ladies?  Maybe, if I have time to pick them.

  5. So glad you got your food!  We had nineties today, predicted for tomorrow and Sunday, with humidity in the seventies.  It will feel like Mississippi.

The New Yorker:  Andy does it again!  Bet McCain has a stroke if he reads this one.

Upworthy:  If only more businesses would do this!  Shared this on Facebook.

New York Times:  This is horrible and any person or organization that uses it to promote their agenda should be penalized in some way.  Real people died, and they had real families and friends who are grieving.  Leave the propaganda out of it.

    Cartoon:   Well said!

  6. Puzzle — 2:52  Sorry Jerry, but you ran out of time!  Thanks for the thought though.  I love the bright yellow and the bright violet.

The New Yorker — Maybe Obama can succeed in making Canada an enemy and restore his legacy!  Oh wait, it's Herr Harper that is pissing off the US with his Republicanus shenanigans!  The Republicanus/Teabaggerum just have to hate, hate, hate!

    Upworthy — Awesome!  Truly awesome!

NY Times — The last I heard, police were still trying to determine a motive for the shootings.  But that won't stop the Republicanus/Teabaggerum, the NRA etc from whipping their followers into a hate filled frenzy!  Why wait for the facts!  My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends.

  7. For those of you who do not remember Harland Dorrinson from two years ago, this is what he also said:

JEERS to…previews of coming attractions?  Even satire is having a tough time keeping up with all the crap these days, but Andy Borowitz still figures out a way, as he reacts to the new Texas abortion restrictions law:

AUSTIN (The Borowitz Report)—Republican lawmakers in the Texas State Senate are proposing a precedent-setting new bill that would make it illegal for women to live in the state.

Senator Harland Dorrinson, one of the many pro-life lawmakers backing the woman ban, crafted his bill after witnessing Senator Wendy Davis filibuster an anti-abortion bill last month.

“That was our moment to say, ‘Enough is enough,’ ” he said. “This comes down to a choice between life and women, and we choose life.”  Senator Dorrinson said his bill would call for a twenty-foot woman-proof fence to be constructed along the borders of the state. …

But another G.O.P. state senator, Cal Jamson, believes that the total ban on women goes “too far” and is proposing a less draconian bill that would allow some women to remain in the state as guest workers.

Yes, because let's not get crazy.
