I’m sure I’ll have a lot more to say about this, as time goes on, and I know more about the details of the deal reached. From everything I can see so far, it appears that it includes all the safeguards we need to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. This seems to be the best possible outcome.
A historic agreement Tuesday to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief will ensure Iran has no possibility to achieve rapid nuclear weapons “breakout” capabilities for at least the next decade, U.S. leaders said.
“We have stopped the spread of nuclear weapons in this region,” said President Obama as he listed some of the pillars of the deal including international inspections, reductions in Iran’s centrifuges used to make nuclear fuel and a sharp cut in Iran’s stockpile of nuclear material.
“We put sanctions in place to get a diplomatic solution, and that is what we have done . . . This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction. We should seize it,” said Obama, noting the potentially tough review ahead in Congress.
Secretary of State John F. Kerry described the deal as moving beyond a political framework reached three months ago, and said it met all U.S. requirements for blocking pathways to weapons development with strict inspections and provisions to snap sanctions back into place if Iran violates the rules.
But he also raised the possibility it could also provide the platform for expanded diplomatic overtures between Iran and the United States — which cut ties shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution… [emphasis added]

I saw more of the details about the deal on Way Too Early.
The biggest obstacle we now face is getting approval from Republicans in Congress. They will also be stirred on my Israeli war monger, Butcher Ben (R-IS). What will happen? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, I’m sure you have a pants-load of petitions.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
It would be a lot easier for the Republicans to swallow if thie deal wasn't called "The historic deal Obama has made with Iran" or something along those lines but "The historic deal between America, Russia, Frace, Germany, Great Britain and Japan and Iran). It describes what happened much better and takes that enormous sting for the GOP out of it too. A deal with Iran is bad enough, but having to give Obama credit for it is just a bridge too far for them.
Next Obama has to deal with two psychologically deeply ingrained aspects of anything related to Iran: their own fearmongering and warmongering. They've been trying to instill so much fear for Iran for such a long time that they've started to believe their own press releases and so have a majority of Americans. It['s very hard to overcome this fear overnight. Much of the Republican fearmongering was part of the strategy to to start another war in the Middle East with Iran as a target. And too many Republicans in Congress are not prepared to give up on that idea either, especially when lobbied out of their skulls by Iran's archenemies Israel and Saudi Arabia. Better keep an eye on those two, they're going to do all it takes to make the Republicans reject the deal.
Obama has already stated he'd veto any attempt by Republican opponents to undermine the nuclear deal, so we're in for another hot and long summer.
Lona, I don't think that describing it properly as "The historic deal between America, Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain and Japan and Iran", which is as you say, exactly what transpired, would make any difference to the rapacious warmongering Republicanus/Teabaggerum. They are too bound up in their war meme.
I agree with Lynn. Republivans might change, if Obama turns white.
I've signed several petitions today–one directed at 19 Democrats who might side with war mongers.
Speaking of war mongers, one of my emails today says that John McCain has a GOP challenger in his primary…also says majority of GOP don't have a good opinion of him…
RepukkklicanTs won’t let this pass without many changes to where they can say it is “their” agreement with Iran! They won’t let President Obama have one more victory to add to his legacy!
Sad to say that the RepukkklicanTs will color every success that President Obama has accomplished to where they can call it their “idea”!!!!!!
They are the whiny little urchins that are always in the class of politicians that are in power at any given time.
Sad. Sad. Sad!
Just Foreign Policy is only one of 20 groups which have teamed up against the 19 Democrats who are thought possible votes against the deal. Here's one like:
http://www.stopwarwithiran.com?source=justforeignpolicy
The groups are listed at the bottom.
Just think of it – that is one group for every potential Blue Dog, and one group left over. I really hope we don't lose this one.
VoteVets has one too:
http://action.votevets.org/page/s/iran-deal
I thought there was a third which I cannot find. I did, however, also get a puff piece (of elephantakopros) from my very Republican Congressman with the subject line "The Iran Nuclear Deal is Worse Than I Imagined," which is probably good, and means it's better than we could have hoped for. I am not reading this, but I am tucking it away as evidence, so if anyone is brave enough to want to wade through it, let me know.
Just got a separate petition from the National Iranian American Council –
http://www.niacaction.org/niac-action-campaigns/
And one from the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation
http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/6357/p/dia/action3/common/public/
(After you sign, this one provides a link to the full text – 159 pages)
And one from Jewish Voices for Peace.
http://org.salsalabs.com/o/301/p/dia/action3/common/public/
That's three links. I'll be back if more show up LOL
Thanks for posting all the petition links Joanne!
Joanne, PSR also has a petition–got an email but it didn't seem to have been posted on their website yet
Thanks for the links, Joanne, I signed.
I signed them all! They didn't even mind that I am a Canuck!
Great job!!
Just a quick note: If Bibi & his Rethuglican cohorts hate it – then I'm pretty damn sure it must be OK!
A less brief note on why Rethuglicans are against it:
Rethuglicans haven’t had a chance to even READ the damn agreement, so how can they uniformly be bad-mouthing it?
Oh, yeah – because it’s Pres. Obama legacy , and he’s a
nig… you know, a Blachhh manRethuglicans are there to do whatever Rep. Bibi Netanyahu (R-IS) tells them to do
Their alternative proposition is SO MUCH BETTER … Oh, wait – they don’t HAVE an alternative proposition
I think (at least hope & pray) they'll FAIL, because like Sir Winston Churchill said:
I believe McCain articulated the Republicanus/Teabaggerum alternative: "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!"
Such a bunch of asshats!
You're absolutely right about this, Nameless. Lindsey "Where's my Fainting Couch" Graham was just on the Today Show talking about how Iran is now going to bomb Israel.
They want to turn the White House "white" again. That is their only objection to this deal.
Bingo!
You are soooo right.
Amen brother!
It's just more step for hope. Because this deal may not be perfect but just like the "tpp trade agreement" which one of the best deals we have gotten. Just one step at a time. I think this deal will fall in the hands of the 2016 elect President. "Historical Day" July 14 2015 . Just being a bully will not keep our country or in fact the world safe. The nuts on the otherside would just love to sit there and play more war games. Power and greed is all we have had if "I meant what I said what ever that was Romney. That goes for the tpp deal also.
I agree Chris "Whatever will we do without Obama as President? "
Ooops Tom I messes up

Amen X3
I sincerely hope this passes. The Republicans are all ready at war with it. I find it curious that they passed the TPP so quickly, which will benefit their corporate owners, but will fight a chance for peace.
TY TC
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to the negotiated deal as "A new chapter of hope." and I hope he is correct. The world is too small to allow such issues to fester. The diplomatic way, when done by skilled negotiators willing to truly listen, is always the best policy. However, I see two issues at this point.
1) the Republicanus/Teabaggerum US Congress which has 60 days to, as I understand, ratify the agreement; and
2) Netanyahu.
I find it interesting that the Republicanus/Teabaggerum have been saying that it is a bad deal, yet they base that on rumour since they haven't seen the agreement. Over and above the fact that the Republicanus/Teabaggerum have obstructed Obama his entire presidency thus far, they are warmongers who cry "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!" It would not surprise me to learn that their war mentality goes back to "losing" face when the Iranian revolutionaries took power and kicked the Shah out. . . a "we're America and you can't do that!" moment. And matters go back further when Iran nationalised its oil industry effectively throwing Britain and the US out of the Iranian oil fields. The Congress has 60 days to ratify the agreement but I suspect they'll find a way to leave it until the last minute. One thing is for sure, the Democrats better muzzle and leash the Blue Dogs!
As to Netanyahu, he is already saying that Israel is not bound by the deal. This from Raw Story http://www.rawstory.com/2015/07/netanyahu-says-israel-not-bound-by-iran-deal-as-he-hints-at-military-strike/
Netanyahu is a loose cannon who does not like it when things don't go HIS way!
It certainly will be interesting over the next 60 days.
Israel wasn't a party to the negotiations, so why would they even think they're bound by it?
They're just mad because the Proxy they were counting on to bomb Iran (viz. USA) IS a bound by it.
Damn … there goes Bibi's War with Iran by Proxy. Sorry, Bibi – you can go yuck fourself now.
What Nameless said. Butcher Bibi (R-IS) is just an observer.
President Obama has gone on record saying if theire is any legislation passed that derails the deal, he will Veto it when it reaches his desk. Amen!
I have signed numerous petions and I'm sure some more than once.
Fox News alert this morning said that Netanyahu made a mistake in opposing this deal…strange for them
Their logic may be that it give's Butcher Bibi's enemies incentive to support the deal.
Hugs to all. See today's lead article.
