I’ve continued to improve slowly, and that translates to spending the time I’m not eating or imitating the bathroom habits of a race horse horizontal. I think I be able to start writing again within a few days.

3:38 Congrats, TomCat. I think this is the first time I have seen anyone finish one of these puzzles in under 2 minutes. Rarely does anyone get under 3 minutes.

Cartoon: Truman was far from perfect, but he certainly called this correctly. McCarthy continued to serve until his death in 1957, but blacklisting and the HUAC continued. It's amazing what you can get used to – and this should be a horrible warning for us. I was in high school between 1960 and 1962, and I remember writing a script for a Latin Club event which contained a reference to "the un-Roman Activities Committee." As if it always had been and always would be. Not a good way to live. But I knew no other.

I was alive when McCarthy was in office, but was ignorant of his dubious activities. Only because I was about 3-4 years old when the era began! LOL!
Puzzles were never my strong suit. 18:18! Isn’t that pitiful? That’s the first one of those puzzles I have ever tried!

Vivian, you tried and there is nothing pitiful about that! It will only be pitiful IF you don't keep trying!
As they do say 'practice makes perfect' – and apparently having a mouse improves one's time immensely (I still haven't got one – there are always more important things that I need to buy). Also, you can choose the type of shapes you want the puzzle's picture to go into – we all have our favourites, I like the birds, someone else likes the bulbs (I'm not advanced enough to do that one – it takes me forever) – just hover your cursor over the LHS of the screen and click on 'change cut' if you want to experiment!
BTW – I would say that completing your first puzzle in 18 minutes shows grit and determination Vivian – you will not be beaten – well done!

But what's a "race horse horizontal"? I Googled it, but learned nothing.
I'm assuming it refers to your taking a diuretic of some type – probably Lasix since it's quick acting. But that's just a guess.
Interesting trivia nugget WRT Lasix. It got its name because its diuretic effects LAst SIX hours –> LASIX.
