More Republican Sabotage

I thought that the Republicans’ unfrequented act of sedition, the Butcher Bibi Show, marked the limit of how far the Republican Party would go in their unconstitutional sabotage of the President’s responsibility to conduct foreign policy.  I was wrong.  Now Republicans are actually reaching out and directly threatening a party to those negotiations.

0309Sedition

Republican senators warned Iran on Monday that any nuclear deal made with U.S. President Barack Obama could last only as long as he remains in office, in an unusual intervention into U.S. foreign policy-making.

The letter, signed by 46 U.S. senators, says Congress plays a role in ratifying international agreements and points out that Obama will leave office in January 2017, while many in Congress will remain in Washington long after that.

"We will consider any agreement regarding your nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by the Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei," the letter read.

"The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of an agreement at any time," it read.

The letter, first reported by Bloomberg News, followed a speech to a joint meeting of Congress last week by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who warned that the United States was negotiating a "bad deal" with Tehran.

It comes as world powers have been negotiating with Iran to try to reach some form of understanding by the end of March before a final deal in June that could ease crippling sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy…

These Republicans are conducting their foreign sabotage the same way they do domestically: with lies.  Republicans know that they have a short time with a power advantage, because the outlook for 2016 is as favorable for Democrats as 2014 was for Republicans.  In all probability there will be Congress far more amenable to backing up the policies of a Democratic President.  How can I be confident that we will have a Democratic President?  We have no alternative.  If the Republicans win the White House, the Fascist Five Injustices of SCROTUS will become the SS Six or Stranglehold Seven.  If that happens, America will be over.

As for the graphical question, it most assuredly is sedition.

  1. Fortunately even the Iranian regime has enough sense to not take this rubbish seriously:.

Iran reacted with scorn to the letter, saying it would have no impact on the talks and suggesting that the authors were the ones who did not understand the American system of government in which the president conducts foreign policy.

“In our view, this letter has no legal value and is mostly a propaganda ploy,” Javad Zarif, the Iranian foreign minister, said. “It is very interesting that while negotiations are still in progress and while no agreement has been reached, some political pressure groups are so afraid even of the prospect of an agreement that they resort to unconventional methods, unprecedented in diplomatic history.”

It's hardly surprising that the Iranian foreign ministry understands our system of government better than the Republicans do.  They are, after all, responsible for negotiating with our President — something the Republicans have never shown any desire to do.

  2. The legal definitions of sedition don't quite cover this.  The legal definition of treason (as of 1983), however,  included in pertinent part "…[a]…citizen's actions to help a foreign government…make war against, or seriously injure the [parent nation]."  I suppose you might consider their action to be sedition as a lesser included offense of this particular action and get to it that way.  Then there is "seditious conspiracy."  With 46 out of 100 of them signing this letter, that might also be a possibility.

Barack Obama is a Constitutional lawyer.  I would love for him to explain it.

  3. How in the world, or at least in the US, can they do such an idiotic stunt? That is straight-up SEDITION! I would be so happy to see President Obama call them on the carpet for such goings on!
This should be impeachable actions for every person that signed this “letter” to Iran threatening them! This is just simply UNFRIGGINBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!

  4. Simply too livid at this clear act of, if not Sedition, then at a minimum a violation of the Logan Act, to write any coherent thoughts now.

Steam is streaming out of my ears!  These ASSHOLES deserve to be charged and tried.

And wouldn't it be nice if the vaunted "Librul Media" actually ciommited some Journalism and started digging deeper on this travesty?  But they got the bright, shiny "Hillary's Personal Emails" nothing-burger going for them.

  5. No President has ever been undermined and disrespected before in the history of our country  I am just plain SHOCKED.

  6. I love Infidel's last paragraph, there is little to add to this.  However, I do think those 46 Republicans should be on trial for something!  If he wanted to declare war on Iran I bet they would all jump on board.  Nothing the Repubs like better that making gunfodder of our citizens on foreign soil.

  7. The audacity of the Republicanus/Teabaggerum to participate in this seditious act beggars belief.  First Boehner and his addled Jamesons brain invite Netanyahu to speak before a joint session of the Congress, and now these addle brained senators come up with this seditious act.  I think the Republicanus/Teabaggerum are the most unpatriotic, obstructionist individuals.  Benedict Arnold has nothing on these guys.  Perhaps we should ask to see their birth certificates.

  8. I believe this shows us just how much the Military-Industrial complex controls the Rethugs. They don't want to lose their backing. There is too much money at stake for both. The Chicken-Hawks have spoken.

  9. Just noting that 47% of Senators signed this seditious letter.

    Hmmm … 47% … 47% … 47% …

Where have we heard THAT number before involving Rethuglicans?

  10. I never realized their hero was Aaron Burr.

  11. Backstabbing Republicans Publish Open Letter To Iran Undermining Negotiations

    By karoli

Organized by freshman Senator Tom Cotton and signed by the chamber's entire party leadership as well as potential 2016 presidential contenders Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, the letter is meant not just to discourage the Iranian regime from signing a deal but also to pressure the White House into giving Congress some authority over the process.

“It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system … Anything not approved by Congress is a mere executive agreement,” the senators wrote. “The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.”

  12. TY TC – I have to agree, it sounds like sedition.  Or worse.

  13. Petition to prosecute at whitehouse.gov:

It requires 100,000 signatures to get a response.  It's just about at 10,000 as I post this.
