Day 96. After going out for a haircut in heavy rain, getting dry and changed, and preparation for tomorrow’s prison volunteer work, there was no time left to do research. I hope to post tomorrow, before leaving for prison.

I am not a morning person. I usually tell people if they want bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, they need to go catch a frikken squirrel. Maybe I should start saying a tomcat.

I want to leap into that picture and save the darling cat, even though I know he is safe and content – my own rescue cat is sitting near me and purring happily as I type (I think she wants me to hold her bowl of food while she eats – if her purring gets VERY loud then that will prove it!). I can't wait ti see the flutterbys in my yard. I've been shoveling for 5 days straight now. I just finished today. No snow for a few days now but bitter cold coming down from Lynn's neck of the woods. Share nice stuff with me not the bitter cold. Please? Shane has been snow blowing and roof raking every day too, with a little help form me.

Hey Patty, my neck of the woods has been 10 – 15 C (50 – 60 F) during the day lately. One ski hill did not open this year because there was not enough snow, and another on the north shore mountains is likely closing for the same reason . . . snow is actually melting! The Prairies, Central Canada (Ont & Qué), and the Maritimes are another matter. But hey, Wiarton Willie didn`t see his shadow on 02/02 so spring and warmer temps are on the way! Here in Metro Vancouver we only had one small snowfall. Rain . . . well that is another story as we have had a couple of pineapple expresses. So who says there is no such thing as climate change and global warming?

We've lost almost a Billion – BILLION – Monarch Butterflies!
I don't do the puzzles, but I see it's a butterfly of some type. Thought it worth mentioning here that the Monarch Butterfly is now being evaluated for Endangered Species designation!
Monarchs require milkweed (genus Asclepias) to rest on their migration route, lay their eggs and eat, and the widespread use of herbicides has decimated their milkweed homes.
Having spent my summers as a kid with my two uncles on the family farms (and actually farming for 1 1/2 years after residency because one of my uncles passed away), I know milkweed is considered a "varmint". But living in the burbs now, I plan to plant a good patch of milkweed this spring – and I got just the spots for it!

Just be sure to get the right species. I gather not all species are equally nourishing, and apparently some "bad" species drive out "good" species." I know you are good at "doing your homework", and have confidence.
I appreciate that. I looked it up at the Missouri Botanical Gardens (love that place – just too bad it's in St. Louis and not KCMO), and they listed four. But two of them have problems – one grows too tall (4-5') for where I want it, and the other requires Zone 9-11, and that's a LOT warmer than we get. (Although they said it can be grown here as an annual.)
