I’m writing for tomorrow.  The quarterly surgery on my foot was more painful than usual.  The gr4owth was more deeply embedded than it normally is.  But now that it’s over, I can walk without foot-pain for a few more weeks.  I am, however, quite tired, and most of the day is gone, so this article is tomorrow’s only.  Day 16.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:47 (average 5:06).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Upworthy: Out Of The World’s Most Dangerous Animals, I Bet You’re Most Afraid Of The Safest Ones

They forgot ChickenHawk. GW Bush killed more.

From Daily Kos: ACA Signups: The Final* Graph of the 2014 Open Enrollment Period

Click through for details and a closer view. Unlike Republicans, these numbers don’t lie.

From The New Yorker: In what legal experts are calling a landmark decision, on Monday the United States Supreme Court struck down what many believe to be the main reason the country was started.

By a five-to-four vote, the Court eliminated what grade-school children have traditionally been taught was one of the key rationales for founding the United States in the first place.

“The separation of church and state has been a cornerstone of American democracy for over two hundred years,” said Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority. “Getting rid of it was long overdue.”

You know this Republican decision is too rich in embedded satire for Andy to leave it alone.

  1. Glad your foot is better – but sorry it hurt so much!  Upworthy thinks we're all afraid of sharks and wolves?  I'm far more afraid of some humans!

  2. Hope you're up and hopping about soon.

Someone pointed out that since mosquitoes get their top billing only because they transmit disease, then that should apply to humans as well.  Following that rubric, humans are actually the top killer:

    • Very interesting arguments and comments Nameless,

    • ~~" The totals are probably greater than 5 million per year that are killed by infectious diseases where it was humans who transmitted the agent to other humans. Way more than the mosquitoes."

      Agreed and thank you,

    • Good point!

  3. 3:58  They look like funny colored artichokes.   Speaking of choking…I think I did on this puzzle.

  4. New Yorker: If this is true that the First Amendment has been struck down, then the SCROTUM 5 really need to be taken to the woodshed and spanked!

  5. Puzzle — 3:20  Pretty cacti!

Upworthy — I was surprised to see that "humans" were not the most deadly as when I saw the top of the graphic, I immediately thought of humans as the most deadly.  When you think of the wars alone, that seals it for me.  Add on communicable diseases, chemical accidents and the like, humans outstrip any other creature.  Nameless's link further scores points in mking humans the most deadly animal.  Just think of such things as the Republicanus/Teabaggers wanting to cut social security, Medicaid, SNAP etc and that will lead to more deaths, many slow and agonising.  Humans are the one animal on this planet that are very deliberate in causing deaths.

Daily Kos — Whatever the numbers, the signup has been good and people are seeing the benefits, even those that have traditionally called themselves Republicans.  The ACA is working and the Republicanus/Teabaggers don't like that so they, as usual, resort to lies.

The New Yorker — Andy nailed it, again!  The founding fathers put that separation in the constitution for a reason — religious strike was rampant in Britain and Europe.  Today, one only look to some other nations to see how theocracies work to the detriment of people.  There needs to be a house cleaning at SCOTUS.

Cartoon — I hope your bandage looks more colour coördinated than in the picture.  And keep up on the smoking cessation.  You know you have our support.

  6. From Upworthy:

FACT CHECK TIME! As with every piece of content we publish, we rigorously checked some of the numbers presented here.

    I love factual Data… 😀

  7. Upworthy ~ Is this before or after "Stand your ground" was legallized?

Daily Kos ~ Sign-ups exceeded expectations. Great news.

New Yorker ~ Total disregard for the Constitution should be grounds for their immediate dismissal. Lifetime terms, what a joke!

Cartoon ~ Nice cast. Poor puddy-tat.

  8. I hope your foot heals quickly.

Upworthy:  Mosquitoes are one thing I have no regret about killing.  Although, I did get a pretty nasty spider bite while working in my yard yesterday.  Just saying.

Daily Kos:  They have temporaily abandoned the ACA for Monica.

The New Yorker:  Andy is always right.

    Cartoon:  Poor kitty.

  9. Thanks everyone.  The foot is much better today.
