I’m writing for tomorrow. Leave it to me to schedule my moving week to coincide with an official Winter Storm Warning with high temperatures in the mid to high 20° range (very rare here), wind at 20 – 30 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH, and snow. It’s cold enough to freeze the ObamaBalls off a brass Nevada Leg Hound! I had planned to go do some work at the new place, but see today’s cartoon. Worse than the weather, the Guitar Freak woke up.
Late Update: Guitar Man terrorized the building all day. No sleep. Argh!
Later Update: Guitar Man just went to jail. :-D Good night!
Jig Zone Puzzle:
Today’s took me 3:42 (average 4:44). To do it, click here. How did you do?
Short Takes:
From Daily Kos: …FLOWOOD, MS, 11/24/13: Churchgoers got quite a scare at Pinelake Church in Rankin County Sunday morning. Flowood Police say a man’s gun accidentally discharged as he was sitting down. Officers took Joseph Edgar Ray into custody. He was in possession of a 9mm handgun. According to police, Ray’s gun was in his front right pocket and went off as he sat down. He’s been charged with Discharging a Firearm in the City. Ray will appear in Flowood Municipal Court Jan. 9. MORE: Authorities tell us Ray has an enhanced carry gun permit, which gives him the right to carry a concealed weapon in public. Pinelake has posted signs prohibiting weapons on church property. The signs are not clearly visible so Ray may not have seen them, officials say. There were no injuries. But one woman was hit on the leg by the bullet after it ricocheted off the floor. [Ed. note: What?]…
Click through for lots of other good reasons why only Democrats should be allowed to own guns. Republicans, like this one, are just too damn stupid to be trusted with a knife and fork, let alone a gun. ;-) Seriously, I suppose a woman in MS is considered nobody. I guess packing heat in church shows the love of Republican Supply-side Jesus (not the real Jesus).
From CREW: Map: States Where the Fracking Industry is Active
CREW’s report shows fracking industry contributions flow to congressional candidates from fracking districts. The map below compares the change in fracking industry campaign contributions between Senate election cycles in 21 states where fracking is taking place. Depending on a state’s Senate election cycle, CREW compared contributions for either the 2004 and 2010 campaign cycles or the 2006 and 2012 campaign cycles. CREW also included information about the top recipient of fracking industry campaign contributions in each state.
Click through for the report PDF and a map, of what Republican (mostly) mother frackers are doing.
From NY Times: Much of the media commentary on President Obama’s big inequality speech was cynical. You know the drill: it’s yet another “reboot” that will go nowhere; none of it will have any effect on policy, and so on. But before we talk about the speech’s possible political impact or lack thereof, shouldn’t we look at the substance? Was what the president said true? Was it new? If the answer to these questions is yes — and it is — then what he said deserves a serious hearing.
And once you realize that, you also realize that the speech may matter a lot more than the cynics imagine…
To do justice to this superior editorial by Paul Krugman, I would have to reproduce the whole thing, which would infringe on the ©. So you click through and read it, please. Personally, I believe Obama meant what he said, which means we will have lots of opportunities to keep exposing that Republicans represent only the super-rich and corporate criminals. They do NOT represent YOU!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
3:51 I used snail mail today.
3:19 Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds…but Lynn might.
Later Update ~ WooHoo! He must have really riled all the tenants. Let's hope they keep him at east for the weekend.
Daily Kos ~ They only reported 52 other shooting "accidents" in this article. How many more were there? Every time they relax the gun laws anywhere, more shootings take place. Maybe they will cull the herd of idiots who carry guns around. has anyone read the comment on this article? Quite the arguments raging.
CREW ~ I'm thankful NY is still resisting the frackers and am surprised California is allowing it. What is even more surprising is Jerry Brown signed the bill allowing it. California is one of the biggest farming states and fracking pollutes the water system. Dairy products and green grocer items will be in danger of poisoning. Buyer beware!
NY Times ~ I stand with Paul Krugmannin believing that President Obama did and can make a difference. I watched his interview with Chris Matthews and was very impressed. He sounded more like a Progressive. Now he doesn't have to worry about re-election. He only has to worry about our Country and its many people.
Cartoon ~ That sounds like a normal winter day for me. Sorry about climate change.
They should probably add an additional question to their Concealed Carry Permit Application:
[True or False] – I often forget where I put my loaded gun in public places
Along with the cold temps, we've got 8 inches of snow on the ground here in Eugene. It's time for all of the folks who think owning a 4-wheel-drive vehicle renders them immune to the laws of physics to begin adding to the accident total for the month.
Marva and I plan on staying inside for the next few days.
5:01, which explains why I call it snailmail.
MS: Depending upon the muzzle velocity. the composition of the floor, amd the number of ricochets, it is BARELY possible that the bullet did no damage to the person it hit. It's also possible the woman had a low-tech prosthetic leg. The statement, however, is so idiotic on the face of it that it should have been amplified – and clearly the editor thought so too.
NYT: I was going to say we can only hope, but we can do more – we can support. And as TC says, we can grab every opportunity to expose the criminals.
Cartoon: It's pretty typical for me too. Although last winter was somewhat warmer, we have been having single digit highs this week.
Guitar Man just went to jail. Priceless… 😆
5:24 –
Mayor in small town here went with his beer in hand, waving his gun to tell real estate people they could not be looking at a house at 5 pm! Obviously, those gun folks are not known for their great intelligence….
Stay warm and safe all of you who are in the storm path…. spring is only… um… a few months away….
Hi everyone!
Glad that Guitar man was hauled off to the clink! I feel your joy!
As to the weather, we are having cold here too. Last night was down to -13C (~10F). It is also drier than usual . . . a real Arctic wind blowing through . . . so the static is quite noticeable. Makes cuddling with my 3 a little problematic. I understand this cold snap will be with us until mid next week.
Stay warm!
Glad guitar man got arrested, maybe everyone else can get some sleep.
Good luck with the move, we are having the same weather here, unusual and surely fouled up my plans.
Daily Kos: All the benefits of the "right to bear arms".
Crew: We are getting lots of commercials about the benefits of fracking. So far, Kentuckians are not buying it.
NY Times: I almost always agree with Krugman. I am happy to see the pres finally adressing these issues. He doesn't have to run again, he can use this time to fulfill the promises he made when he campaigned the first time. I think after enough people sign on the the ACA and are satisfied he will be able to put that aside and work on the economy and growing inequality in this country.
Cartoon: Oreo said the same thing when I wouldn't let him go out on the screened porch today.
