By the time you read this, the results will be in, so please understand that I’m writing while the polls are still open. The two high profile races are the gubernatorial contests in NJ and VA, and they appear to be done deals, but one can always hope and/or fear depending on the state. There are other very important issues, especially determining who will be allowed to exercise their right to vote and who will have it stolen.
Welcome to Election Day 2013, where two gubernatorial contests and the race for mayor of the nation’s biggest city will be settled and a GOP primary battle for a U.S. House seat in Alabama is getting outsized attention.
But what makes most of these 2013 elections interesting is what they may tell us about 2014 midterms and the 2016 race for the White House.
Virginia and New Jersey are the only two states to hold elections for governor in the year after a presidential contest, putting them directly in the national political spotlight. In New Jersey, public opinion polls indicate tough-talking Gov. Chris Christie, one of the biggest names in the Republican Party, will easily win re-election over little known Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.
With Christie considering a run for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, his re-election campaign is seen as a tuneup or stepping stone for that likely White House bid.
In Virginia, national issues like the government shutdown and the health care law are playing a large role in the battle between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. For months McAuliffe has held a consistent small lead in public opinion polls over Cuccinelli, who is considered a hero to many tea party supporters and other grass-roots activists thanks to his very public conservative crusades, including his push against Obamacare…

Perhaps the reason Republicans now admit that they are excluding minorities to help Republican chances is to make this seem practical rather than racist. They ignore the reason most minorities vote for Democrats. Minorities object to the racism inherent in Republican economic policy and the overt racism embraced by so many prominent Republicans in their quest to capture the hate vote.

My jaw has been dropping at Rachel Maddow's revelation of what has been going on in various parts of America (those ruled by the Repuglicon party) – but in Dallas County, Texas ONE VOTER IN FOUR HAS HAD TO FILE AN AFFIDAVIT TO SAY THEY ARE WHO THEIR DOCUMENTS SAY THEY ARE!!! (Apologies for shouting – but my jaw is still at half mast with disbelief!). Out of 700,000 people who could vote in Texas but who do not have the proper ID only one hundred and twenty one people have been given free voter IDs to vote ….. Does anyone wonder about their voting preference and perhaps skin colour????

Does anyone know how I can get my jaw back into position – the other Rachel Maddow is equally amazing – we are now told by a Reich Winger that abortion causes storms and what we call global warming! He says 'once you open the door to killing' that God takes his protective hand away …. does that include judicial killing – as in death sentences, which I believe the GOP are very keen on??? Off to do some jaw exercises!
It worries me – voter suppression will only be tolerated for so long – sooner or later someone's temper is going to snap, it can't be good.
Well, don't look for North Colorado to be a state any time soon. And several Colorado communities voted in bans or moratoriums on fracking, which may last until the TPP gets fast tracked. We may not know the results for Washington's Prop 522 for some time. Let's hope we at least find out before the TPP gets fast tracked and makes it academic.
And if anyone cares, we voted tax increases for education down 2-1 and taxes on pot up 2-1.
All in all, I was not disappointed too badly.

I am happy McAuliffe won. We had another major lay off in the mining industry here today, and since coal is the main source of employment, that is going to make it harder for a democrat to be elected since they are blamed for the "War on Coal" that McConnell keeps preaching about.
I was relatively pleased with the outcome in Virginia, although withless than 1,000 votes separating the Democrat and Republicanus/Teabagger candidates for Attorney General and each getting in excess of 3/4 of a million votes, it will be interesting to see if there is a recount etc. When a Cuccinelli spokesperson mentioned that if the voter turnout was below 30%, Cuccinelli would win, and if over that, he'd lose, I thought about the statistically low turn outs on off years. Turn out I believe was just over 40% and Cuccinelli lost. That should be a lesson shouted from the highest mountain — get out and vote. Your vote does make a difference. Of course, Cuccinelli really was a horse's ass in his political message and alienated the thinking, common sense Virginians. Yup, Couch screwed the pooch!
New York City, a good outcome.

In Colorado, I was pleased to see that the issue of secession was dealt with cleanly by the people.
And of course in Washington, the GMO labelling initiative will take a while. In thinking about some of the products I buy, many are already being labelled as GMO free. Of course, that is because they are and admittedly there is an advantage to the companies to do so. Wouldn't it be interesting if these products experienced up swings in sales while non labelled products experienced a loss in sales. That is the only way to move the discussion.
I just heard a bit of info from Christie. Although he did not outright say he was making a bid for the Republicanus/Teabagger nomination for the presidency in 2016, he did say he did not anticipate serving out his full term as governor. Seems he has made his decision to run which a lot of people, myself included, figured he was going to do. With an ego as big as his, he can't help but run.
