Powell Blasts McCrorystan

On rare occasions, I actually get to say something good about a Republican.  Sadly that usually happens only when the Republican is one that the others hate.  That said, Colin Powell visited the Totalitarian Corporate Plutocracy of McCrorystan and blasted the state for its racist policies right to TeaFuhrer McCrory’s face!

26PowellFormer Secretary of State Colin Powell was the keynote speaker at the CEO Forum in Raleigh, North Carolina, Wednesday evening. After introductory remarks, Republican Gov. Pat McCrory left the stage to listen to the retired general from the audience. Last month, McCrory signed into law new voter restrictions that will make it harder for the poor, disabled, student and minority voters to cast ballots. He did not address the law in his remarks. Powell said:

"I want to see policies that encourage every American to vote, not make it more difficult to vote," said Powell, a Republican, at the CEO Forum in Raleigh.

"It immediately turns off a voting block the Republican Party needs," Powell continued. "These kinds of actions do not build on the base. It just turns people away." […]

"You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud," Powell said. "How can it be widespread and undetected?"

Powell, who served under President George W. Bush, also said the new law sends the wrong message to minority voters. "What it really says to the minority voters is … ‘We really are sort-of punishing you,’" he said…

Please join Daily Kos by urging Congress to save the Voting Rights Act by creating a new preclearance formula. [emphasis added]

I would rather Powell been more direct in his approach, but his meaning was still clear.  The Republican War on Voting will hurt them in the long run, and hurts us all now.

One person, One Vote!

Down with McCrorystan!

  1. I am glad that Colin Powell said what he did – though it didn't go far enough.  As he said ""You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud," Powell said. "How can it be widespread and undetected?" " – goodness me – is there a member of the GOP who still has parts of their brain working?!!  Bet the rest just ignore it though – they have invested too heavily in ludicrous rhetoric for too long to backtrack now.  Bye bye GOP!

  2. Not only is Colin Powell spot-on in destroying the myth of "voter fraud" by pointing out that it's impossible to be BOTH "widespread AND undetected" – he's also correct when yesterday on Face the Nation he said the GOP efforts at voter suppression is "Going to backfire."

These kinds of procedures that are being put in place to slow the process down, and make it likely that fewer Hispanics and African Americans might vote I think is going to backfire, because these people are going to come out … to vote

This is not the way to do it. The way to do it is to make it easier to vote and then give them something to vote, they can believe in

    • Thanks for the article Nameless.  I for one, sure hope it does backfire big time, like an exploding cigar in the face!

    • I agree, and have said sio for some time.  Taking something away from  is a great cure for apathy, even if they didn'r care about it before.

  3. "You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud," Powell said. "How can it be widespread and undetected?"

Just good incentive to vote evey Republican and Tea-Bag out of office…. πŸ™‚

  4. When I read this in our local paper, I was actually surprised because the portrayed Powell in a good light. They are a very Right-Wing-Nut paper. He is not one to mince words withe the wing-nuts like McCrory.

  5. I signed Daily Kos' petition. Thanks for posting it. I don't know how I missed it.

  6. "…The goal is still to suppress enough votes to shave a few percentage points from the Democratic tally, enough in some races to throw the victory to Republican candidates. If they can get away with that, and the U.S. Supreme Court has made that effort easier with its Shelby decision, then they will continue to do so no matter what Powell and other highly placed critics have to say."

This is the true fraud!  We know voter fraud is not an issue.  Baby Bush's study done by the DOJ proved that.  The true fraud is the election fraud and voter suppression that the Republicanus/Teabaggers perpetrate across the country.  The true fraud is a SCOTUS that is partisan, especially when it comes to voting laws.

Why do Republicanus/Teabaggers feel they need to resort to chicanery and deceit?  Could it be that they have nothing to offer the average American?  Could it be that they are drunk on power, control and greed?

The Republicanus/Teabaggers wail about a lack of democracy and the subversion of the constitution, but is they who are subverting the constitution, not for the sake of democracy, but for the plutocracy that they support.

I think what Colin Powell is trying to say is build your own position,  don't try to tear down the opposition by variou undemocratic means.  their actions will come back to bite them in the ass!

    • Republicans feel the need to resort to chicanery and deceipt, because none would be elected, if they ran on what they truly represent: upward transfer of wealth and totalitarian Republican power.

  7. I had all ready signed  the Daily Kos petition, as well as several others on this subject.  I wonder if Powell regrets his time with Dubya.  I still see him holding that vial of white powder, asserting it to be a wmd.  I had respected him until then. Maybe he is seeking validation by going against the GOP this time..

    • I have heard him express regret and apologize several times.  Like those who commit other crimes, if there is evidence that he has remorse, has learned, has changed, and is demonstrating that he is now a contributing member of society, no longer a criminal, he should be considered rehabilitated.
