As most of you know, we are suffering under a Republican sequester now because Republicans refused to stop terrorizing America with a government shutdown, unless Obama agreed to massive cuts to discretionally spending (spending for the general welfare of 99%), before any negotiations took place.  Instead Obama demanded that half those cuts come from defense spending.  What Republicans had proposed was a sequester.  Obama just called it that.  Then Republicans refused to negotiate at all, causing the sequester to take effect.  Frankly, Obama gave them too good a deal, albeit under extreme duress.  Now Republicans are using the budget to welch on that deal.

4VetoThe White House stepped in Monday with a veto threat against a House GOP plan to advance a round of 2014 spending bills that would ease sequester-imposed cuts on the Pentagon while forcing even deeper cuts on non-defense programs.

Those cuts would come in areas like education, energy and water development and foreign aid.

In a statement, the White House budget office said the cuts called for in the GOP plan would force thousands of poor children off of Head Start, harm special education, cut federal law enforcement and dent medical research grants to thousands of scientists. It called on the Democratic Senate and GOP House to reach a broader agreement on the budget before advancing spending bills…

The statement promised a veto of every spending bill until Washington reaches a bargain on "an overall budget framework that supports our recovery and enables sufficient investments in education, infrastructure, innovation and national security for our economy to compete in the future."… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <ABC>

Republicans will lead with increases to defense spending and an increase in 3.5% increase in spending for veterans.  They are anticipating the veto so they can claim that Obama blocked spending on veterans.  Obama would agree to the increase for vets in a hot minute, if this were a stand-alone measure, but it is not.  It is just one piece of the budget. The standard practice is for parties to agree on the overall framework of the budget before hammering out the details, but Republicans refuse to negotiate on framework.  Therefore Obama is correct to veto all individual measures until such a framework is in place.  Of course this shows, once again, that Republicans’ word is without value.  Now, when the screaming starts about Obama refusing to fund veterans, you’ll know why that is a lie.

  1. I agree with everything you say TC – and I wish I could think of something to ameliorate the situation – but for the life of me I can't.  The Repuglicons are just dishonourable and vile – and seem controlled by the TP.  End of story – sadly.

    • Pat, the only way to ameliorate the situation is to deep six the Republican/Teabaggers by voting them out of office.  They do not deserve the privilege of serving the people, which is what they should be doing.

    • What Lynn said, Pat.  Hear, hear!

  2. They RepublicanTs don't care how much they hurt the working poor so long as their corporate masters are happy.

  3. Well all I can say is "Hasta la vista" republian/tea party the Democrats are moving in! Thanks Tom

  4. Pres. Obama addresses the American people.  Paraphrased from a post I saw quite a bit ago when the sequester was the raging topic:

"Speaker Boehner asked recently where was the leadership from the White House on the issue of the pending cuts to defense and Medicare. Speaker Boehner, here is your leadership: last year you agreed to a deal wherein the Congressional Super Committee would be tasked to find $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts and, if they failed, then the pending cuts to Medicare and Defense, $600 billion from each, would automatically be triggered in 2013.

This was your deal, Speaker Boehner, and as recently as last November you assured the American people that you were bound by your agreement with me and the Democratic members of Congress.

The leadership from the White House is this: we agreed to the deal and we are bound to it by principle and honor. We expect you to behave no less honorably. If you cannot convince your members to produce legislation that treats the middle class more fairly and asks the most fortunate among us to pay their fair share, then at a minimum the White House and the American people expect you to honor your agreements.

Thank you, good night, and God bless America."

    • I I hope he keeps his word and vetoes them.  Of course, Faux news will be all over him for not helping the veterans. He needs to hold the line for once with the Republicans.

    • The Democrats need to keep this out there, reminding the public that the Republicans started this and are the ones who should be held accountable. I don't understand why we have a country full of sheep.

    • Sadly, I have to disagree with him.  Thed American prople should NOT expect Republicabs to honor their agreements, because doing so is a false expectation.

      Double Amen to Edie.

  5. Even with the sequester, the rich get richer & the rest of us get screwed. Recovery is NOTHING to anyone but Wall $treet! JOBS are the only thing that give the 99% some chance at Recovery. But CONgre$$ knows JOBS, especially good, living-wage jobs, mean UNIONS & increased surplus in Social Security – that means they couldn’t elect more CONservatives or raid Social Security!!!! Obama NEEDS to Lead with JOBS & stick to it!!! Government jobs are necessary to America’s Real Recovery – there’s a freeze on government jobs & America needs those jobs!

    • Yvonne, that was true a few months ago, but no more.  The housing market is recovering, consumer confidence  is up, and eben JOBS are beginning to rebound.

  6. Although the title of this article is "Canadian Politics Just Got Turned Upside Down", it has significant US information in the graphs.

The necessity to cut budgets etc and cut deficits is well known.  But the Republican/Teabaggers keep harping on the deficit as their logic (illogic to anyone else!) to cut spending.  But who was it that got the deficit to where it is?  The graphs tell the story.

As to vetoing class warfare, Mr Obama has little choice.  The Republican?Teabaggers have no honour, no intention to uphold their grand bargain.  That is apparent.  Mr Obama must stand firm.
