International Mother Earth Day — it has a nice ring to it. But are we willing to do, internationally, what it takes to sustain the Mother Earth or will we be found guilty of matricide?
Each of us can do more to sustain and cherish Mother Earth . . . I know I can and I will try.
Today in church, our pastor spoke of Mother Earth and used an example which of course I can't remember now. But his example drew to a Superman comic from when I was a kid.. In it, a kid throws a gum wrapper on the ground. Superman reminds the kid that littering is wrong. The kid responds by saying "But it's just one wrapper." Suddenly the kid is no longer visible because he is covered in millions of gum wrappers. The there was a second story of a kid throwing down his bicycle on the sidewalk where it would be in the way of others using the sidewalk. Superman to the rescue again. "But it's just one bicycle.." whereupon the sidewalk was transformed into a sea of wheels and spokes, handlebars and bike frames, all piled high and no kid to be seen.
Just as this mess in which we now find ourselves was not created by one person but had contributions from many, so too the solutions. We need to listen carefully to Mother Earth, venerate her, sustain her. In so doing, we sustain ourselves. We were created for Mother Earth, Mother Earth was not created by us. In the United Church's Creed, there is a line that was added years ago . . . "to live with respect of all Creation."

Just don't count on Republican/Teabaggers to contribute to the solution. They are guilty of pre-meditated matricide!
To quote Mahatma Gandhi: "An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it."
Last year I planted a tree. I can't do that this year, so a new Earth friendy heirllom rose is going into my back yard.
I found today's interactive "Google Doodle" celebrating Earth Day most enjoyable.
