Yesterday was hot, but not as hot as was expected – which is a good thing – and particularly because I didn’t sleep all that well Monday night. I did make it through the day, though.

Cartoon –

Short Takes –

The Hill – Officers offer harrowing accounts at first Jan. 6 committee hearing
Quote – “The indifference being shown to my colleagues is disgraceful!” said Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone as he slammed his fist on the table. “My law enforcement career prepared me to cope with some of the aspects of this experience,” Fanone said. “Nothing has prepared me to address those elected members of our government who continue to deny the events of that day, and in doing so, betray their oath of office.”
Click through for more, including some video. I’ll cover the hearing every day there is news of it – it may not always be from the same source.

Wonkette – Democrats Need To Pass Some Voting Rights Bills While We Still Have Voting Rights
Quote – How exactly will Democrats “out-organize” legislation that was specifically crafted to fuck them? That remains unclear in the electoral Magic Eight Ball. Nancy Wang, executive director of Voters Not Politicians, a Michigan-based ballot initiative, said Republicans are actively “trying to peel away Democratic-leaning voters wherever they can. … It’s sort of death by 1,000 cuts.” A relevant example in Michigan is a Republican push to require additional steps for voters who cast ballots without a photo ID. (The GOP likely isn’t interested in making photo IDs easier to obtain, of course.)
Click through for article. I cannot agree more. I don’t know what will work, short of a miracle. (And if you can stand any more discouragement, check this out. Unbelievable, but – true. )

The Guardian – Trump officials can testify to Congress about his role in Capitol attack, DoJ says
Quote – “The extraordinary events in this matter constitute exceptional circumstances warranting an accommodation to Congress,” Bradley Weinsheimer, a senior career official in the office of the deputy attorney general, said in the letter. The justice department told Rosen and Trump administration officials that they could appear before Congress as long as their testimony was confined to the scope set forth by the committees and did not reveal grand jury or classified information, or pending criminal cases.
Click through for details. This is noteworthy exactly because the DOJ has been (in my opinion, the opinion of Glenn Kieschner, and probably the opinios of everyone here) has so far been way too generous in extending executive privilege to TFG & Co. It would not surprise me if this is the theme of Glenn’s chat today.  (Update – it isn’t ytoday, but he’ll get to it, I’m sure.)

  1. Cartoon: Bummer that they were dispersed. All they were asking for was wanting to be compensated for their military service. They rightly deserved it.
The Hill: I watched parts of the hearings…got a BIG lump in my throat listening to the Capitol police, with giving their testimonies. The R’s denial of their testimonies and events of that day, is horribly cruel. imho
Wonkette: Yes, we need to get voting bills through and step up. If not, the R’s will.
    The Guardian: Bring. IT. ON!!!
    Cartoon: Right on, Ms. Pelosi.
Glad that you are doing well with the high temps. We are consistently in the mid/high 90’s.

TJI:  My dad used to say, “all you want, as a middle-class person, is just to have a little bit of breathing room.” We can deliver for the American people on an infrastructure deal that creates good-paying, union jobs. Jobs that give families breathing room. Let’s get it done. ~ President Biden ~
    2. “Is there a vaccine for Fox News? Asking for a country.” ~ George Takei ~
    3. “Obama didn’t hold rallies after Trump got elected. This isn’t normal, it’s an attack on the peaceful transfer of power and it’s dangerous.” ~ Sarah Reese Jones ~
    4. “Texas’ George P. Bush bent the knee, kissed the ring, and sacrificed his dignity – – begging Donald Trump for support – – even after Trump disparaged his own mother. And…in the end, it didn’t work.” ~ Rachel Maddow ~

    • TJI #! – Yes. Joe knows.
TJI #2 – It woould also have to work on NewsMax ans OAN. I surely wish there were. I suppose, in a sense, a good education could be considered one – but it’s not 100% effective, and for many, it’s already way too late.
TJI #3 – No President ever has. The closest I can think of would be that there were probably some kind of motivating events in what would be the Confederate South after the election of Lincoln. But Buchanan did not hold those as personal rallies.
TJI #4 – Who did Trump** NOT disparage?

    • TJI #2 – Would a “Truth Serum” count?

    • TJI #3: Obama didn’t rally unless it was election time either. Trump never did anything but rallying. It was the only way he could keep his devotees attached to him. He lost the last election decisively, but he can’t stop rallying. If he does that, everyone will forget about him and his lies.

I had never even heard of the “Bonus Army” before – let alone know a thing about it.  Thanks for educating me!

    Officers offer harrowing accounts …

    More on this later

Democrats Need To Pass Some Voting Rights Bills

    AMEN!

Trump officials can testify to Congress about his role in Capitol attack

    Looking forward to it!

    Food for Thought

Gym – Be careful what you wish for.  Especially since you’ve now admitted you talked to Donnie on 1/6/21!

    • The Bonus Army was another TC cartoon.  I had heard of it somehow – probably through being a veteran somehow – but yes, there’s very little known about it today and it contains a lot of messaging we should hear.

  3. Cartoon: I’m not familiar with Bonus Army either. Will look at the link Nameless posted.
The Hill: Listening to these Capital officers speak of all they had to go thru; racist slurs, physical violence acts that has caused them major mental/physical harm, really hit me hard. I’m angry at all the rotten R’s who have been downplaying the whole ordeal. When being asked yesterday, certain ones of them telling reporters, that they weren’t watching it, or even cared about it. Making it like it should be swept under the rug and totally forgotten about. These R’s need to be removed from the positions they hold. They’re not performing their jobs that they were sworn in to office to do, which was to serve, fight for the people and our country.
Wonkette: I agree, the Democrats must pass more bills to protect the rights of voters. What the R’s have been doing to make voter’s harder in their states, taking away the voters rights, to me is illegal. Why the courts are allowing it, puzzles me?
The Guardian: I honestly hope they do. That goes for all of his side kick too, like rUdy.
Food for Thought: I hope Nancy does slap him, plus all of the other rotten R’s with subpoenas. Of they dare to lie under oath, off to jail they go.
Hope you’re able to keep cool with the high temps.
We’re having a Flex alert here which started at 4 PM, due to the high temps. Plus the humidity makes it’s worse.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

  4. TH: Those four brave men couldn’t have been more clearer on who they think is to blame for the ordeal they went through and which some barely survived. They also made it quite clear that they never thought of their job in political terms; theirs was to protect everyone and democracy in general. But they may feel quite differently about that.

Wonkette: After reading the second article you’ve linked to:

If this keeps up, I’m going to run out of emoticons soon

TG: Excellent. Subpoena them a.s.a.p; they have nowhere to hide. Of course, they can lie their heads off because it isn’t a court. But it will be for all to see.

FFT: I sure hope Pelosi does just that and my previous statement about lying not being perjury is completely off the mark.
