Housekeeping note – I am having my internet go in and out, and my phone line has so much static that it drowns out everything else, including the dial tone (and that’s loud.) If I should disappear, I’ll be back. But I’m hoping, with patience, to keep to the schedule. Sure glad I reached Squatch before this happened!

Short Takes –
The Hill – Doug Emhoff carves out path as first second gentleman
Quote – Emhoff has headlined regular events but still kept a low profile in the media, striking a balance between breaking barriers as the first male second spouse while also fulfilling the role in a way second ladies have done traditionally. Observers say the lack of media attention is a sign of success.

Aeon – Lies and honest mistakes
Quote – [E]ven honest journalists and careful scholars will sometimes get things wrong. Honest mistakes are made. Once flagged, these errors will be immediately corrected and acknowledged; there might be some hard questions asked about process failures, too. But there’s a very big difference between an error and a lie – and between ‘fake news’ and ‘false news’. A fake is always false, and was intended to be. But a falsehood is not always a fake; it could simply be a mistake.
Click through and maybe bookmark. This understanding is how I was brought up, and it seems to me that it’s not the way that most people think. But I think it’s important for us to strive for and, maybe more importantly, to protect ourselves against increasingly effective ways of spreading falsehoods.
AP News – Jimmy, Rosalynn Carter mark 75 years of ‘full partnership’
Quote – Carter has said often since leaving the Oval Office in 1981 that the most important decision he ever made wasn’t as head of state, commander in chief or even executive officer of a nuclear submarine in the early years of the Cold War. Rather, it was falling for Eleanor Rosalynn Smith in 1945 and marrying her the following summer. “My biggest secret is to marry the right person if you want to have a long-lasting marriage,” Carter said.

Food for Thought
I’m not trying to throw shade on Canada. It could just ae easily been a picture of the US – or anywhere, really.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Sorry to read about your internet, and phone. Can you get a technician out to remedy your situation? Hope so. Thank you for your post, Joanne. Take care.
Cartoon: An historic breakthrough, the R’s could care less. imho
The Hill: How refreshing, and a caring Gentleman at that!
AEON: Great article. Will re-read/save and send on. Begone, trolls that lie. In telling the truth, alot of it has gone out the window, imho. I felt uncomfortable growing up, because as a child and student we were taught to speak truthfully, no matter the consequence(s). Think nuns w/rulers….
AP News: Awww….so sweet! Love their story…
FFT: Yep.
This just in: “When you’re breaking barriers, there’s breaking involved, and breaking means you may get cut sometimes, but that’s okay. ~ Doug Emhoff ~ * h/t JD *
2. “If Weisselberg and his son were being paid off books … what are the chances that the Trump family were being paid off books? ~ Stephanie Ruhle ~
3. “Special interests lobbied to defund the IRS so they could get away with cheating the tax code. And so far, their scheme is working: big corporations and the ultra wealthy avoid paying $1 trillion each year. It’s past time we go after these tax cheats not paying their fair share.” ~ Katie Porter ~
4. “Raise your hand if you’ve never been charged with 15 felony counts.” ~ Jon Cooper ~
5. “If Weisselberg and his son were being paid off books … what are the chances that the Trump family were being paid off books?” ~ Stephanie Ruhle ~
TJI #1 – And he is so right.
TJI #2/5 – 100%.
TJI #3 – Katie Porter is an American Badass, a National Treasure, and a force of nature.
TJI #4 –
TJI#1: Indeed!
TJI#2: Oh, let’s just say…huge!
TJI#3: Of course, and of course!
TJI#4: I love it.
TJI#5: Think I’ve seen that somewhere before. But, it’s certainly worth repeating.
Ditto everything PB wrote! Re: history, I took some classes from Prof. Jellison(quoted in “Hill” article) at Ohio U. awhile back. Truth is often not pretty but we can learn and try to improve on it. Everyone try to stay safe—-from weather,COVID, lunatics, etc.
Doug Emhoff is a trailblazer, and doing a admirable job!
Pres. Obama, as always, hits the nail square on its head:
Pres. Jimmy Carter owns the best Post-Presidency Record EVAH!
Nameless, you are soooo right!
TJI #2 & #5 – 100%!
TJI #3 – Katie Porter’s whiteboard strikes again!
#2 & 5 – Oops on the repeat…Thanks, Nameless for the ‘Heads Up.’
Stephanie Ruhle can say that again, as much as she likes. (So can you.)
Thank you.
Here are some flowers for you, Joanne.
Too bad about your tech issues, hopefully they will be resolved sooner than later.
‘Toon: Does rabies cause irreversible brain damage, like tertiary syphilis? Maybe that’s their problem.
TH: Making us ordinary guys proud, he is.
Aeon: I can truthfully say that i think this is a valuable, and valid, article.
AP: I saw them being interviewed, or some of the interview, last night. Very nice.
FFT: They did it in South America, early in our country…baptizing children and then smashing their heads against trees, so that they would go to heaven unblemished by sin…or so they claimed! Bastards!
I may just have to borrow that picture to put with my article(s) JD.
Hi everyone! Sorry I have been out of touch. Everything is OK. I hope you are all OK!
Yes, it would certainly fit well! You might want to look up Kent Monkman and see how he feels, but it’s just been going around the internet.
All this static on the line and internet going in and out; do you have any idea what causes it, Joanne?
Cartoon: We owe a lot to men of science like Louis Pasteur. Sadly, they haven’t found a vaccine against Extreme Conservatism, better known as Republicanism, yet.
TH: If “no news is good news” when it comes from the Republican side, then you know the country has a long way to go yet.
Aeon: “Truth is empirical, but truthfulness is ethical.” A truth like a cow, as the Dutch say. And the former guy and the current Republicans have neither. That is why 50% of the lies they tell (let’s be generous here) were initially mistakes made because of their unfathomable stupidity and having no grasp of anything empirical at all. But these mistakes became lies when they doubled down on them and repeated them instead of correcting them because they haven’t got an ethical bone in their body.
AP: So sweet. And how envious it makes me.
FFT: It’s understood that it’s the text in combination with a rather “random picture” you’re after, Joanne. This could also be Australia. The “Stolen Generations” is the name given to at least 100,000 Aboriginal children who were forcibly removed or taken under duress from their families by police or welfare officers between 1910 and 1970. Most ended up in “orphanages” to be Christianized.
