Yesterday was pretty quiet. And that is a good thing. Maybe I’ll have time to share a little about my character doll progress (yeah, I know – 75 and still plays with dolls. But it’s never been about the dolls, but about the styles and getting tham as close as possible to right. Remember I’m also a former theatrical costumer.)

Short Takes

The Hill – House to take big step on eliminating Trump-era rules
Quote – Sending the measures to President Biden’s desk would deal a blow to former President Trump’s legacy and mark the first time Congress has repealed his administration’s policies through the CRA, which allows lawmakers and a new president to get rid of rules established under a previous president if they were completed shortly before the change in administration.

Mother Jones – Ammon Bundy Announces Run for Idaho Governor
Quote – It’s not clear how all his pending criminal cases will affect his ability to campaign.
Click through for more details – including that he may not be the most extreme candidate in the race.

Reuters – With Trump probe looming, Democrats vie for Manhattan district attorney
Quote – The candidates have largely refrained from offering specific thoughts on the Trump investigation. But Bragg has often reminded voters on the campaign trail that he helped sue the Trump administration “more than a hundred times” as a deputy in the New York state attorney general’s office. In an interview with Reuters earlier this year, Weinstein said, “Nobody is above the law, no matter who you are or what office you went on to occupy. “Whoever prevails is likely to become a target for Trump, who has dismissed the probe as a “witch hunt” and attacked Vance personally.

Food for Thought

Joe Manchin voted in favor of advancing the voting rights act yesterday. We have all been so hard on him for refusing to, it might be nice to thank him now. Thanking people is a motivator to continue good behavior as a rule – and maybe even to improve upon it.

Well, I think I can take a few minutes to speak about my collector dolls –  mostly 11.5″ fashion dolls, which is the size of a Barbie – but certainly I don’t stick to just Barbies, especially if I can find something better.  I have so far made a 1904 visiting outfit doll complete with feathered hat, parasol, boots, and Gibson girl hairdo, an 1896 traveling outfit doll with the same accessories, some of which are embroidered (I did those two straight from published patterns) and have also some several flappers, a generic Jame Austen character (with a poke bonnet – a way to salvage a doll with trrperably damaged hair), a Queen of Sheba and one of her handmaidens, and an 1876 Centennial ball gown doll with period hairdo (easier than the Gibson, but not as pretty.)  I am also working on, from patterns, an 1840 wedding dress including knockers, petticoat, and shoes, as well as a non-period pillow doll.  I most recently finished the one in this photo – do you recognize her?  The hair might have cooperated better, but then humans somethinines have that problem too.  I have almost collected all the materials I need to start on Michelle Obama’s First Inaugural gown – I just hope I live long ehough to finish it.

  1. Cartoon: Cool.
The Hill: Glad that the Dems are doing this. Getting rid of TOT’s rules through and through is a good process.
MJ: Ho Boy! Sadly, there will be a lot of folks who w/vote for this guy. Sad.
Reuters: I wish Mr. Bragg well in his quest for the Manhattan DA.
    FFT: Dam. So sad.
And.. Thanks to Mr. Manchin for his vote.

WOW…and you make the dresses for your dolls too!!  I am sure that they are all beautiful, with you working on getting the materials, and making the period dresses for them. Thank you for your post.
Is that Ms. Kamala Harris in the picture?

This just in: TJI   Re: FL – “Our unemployment system is in absolute shambles this week and the media won’t address it. Glitches, verification issues, canceled contracts & 5000 employees fired. We have nowhere to go forhelp because @GovRonDeSantis [1] has removed all options for us.” ~ EggMegMuffin ~
    2. “We actually have the opportunity to get @marcorubio out of office.  It will not be easy. Florida is corrupt. And Rubio is bathed in servitude to Republican groups. But we can do it like we did in Georgia. SUPPORT VAL DEMINGS!”  ~ Don Winslow ~
    3. “I’m still waiting for Kirsten Gillibrand go demand Matt Gaetz’s resignation like she did for Al Franken.”
    ~ Jeff E. Guy
    4. “60 votes were needed. Not a a single Republican voted for equal pay for women. Not one. Odd that Gillibrand missed the vote given this is one of her main issues.” ~ Amy Siskind~
    5. “The Capitol rioter who broke into Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s office (and propped his foot on her desk), asked a court to let him travel 100 miles to buy and sell antique cars. His lawyers claim it is his only source of income, though the Washington Post reports he is selling signed photos of himself in Pelosi’s office for $100 a picture.” ~ Doha Madani ~

    • Yup.  You nailed it.  The suit is knitted with pearl cotton, and the blouse crocheted with silk embroidery thread.  She always wears pearls because ahe and sorority sisters in college were known as “The Twenty Pearls” and it’s a tradition.  Her pearls aren’t always white, but with that suit and blouse, they would be.

TJI #1 – That is truly despicable, because of all the state functions one can screw up, that’s the one the hurts pretty much the most vulnerable exclusively … so of course the media won’t touch it. Hey, deSinkhole, I don’t suppose it occurred to you that some of them are white? I’ve been there myself, along with a bunch of other aging veterans.
TJI #2 – We do if we can stop the Republican voting rights grabs. If we can’t do that, we’ll never win in Florida (or several other states) again. Ever.
TJI #3 – Gaetz is not a Senator. (I know, that doesn’t make him not her business, but it’s an excuse.)
TJI #4 – I actually do wonder why. At least she almost certainly wan’t in Cancun.
TJI #5 – Just keep him locked up and he won’t need income. The jail will feed, shelter, and clothe him.

    • TJI#1: Agree that it’s despicable. All the years it’s been in service, you’d think they’d get it together, but like all government or state assistant programs it’s gone to the dogs.
TJI#2:I honestly hope Val gets in. rUbio must GO.
TJI#3: Don’t understand how this rotten creep is still in office. Sick of these molesters getting away with their evil acts.
TJI#5: Stupid fool, he should of thought about that before his crap on Jan. 6th. I agree with Mitch to keep him locked up.

    • TJI #2 – Val Demings is head-and-shoulders better than “Little Marco”.

TJI #3 – As I’ve said before, I do not think Sen. Al Franken got a fair hearing.  And I’ll always hold that against Gillibrand’s jumping the gun.

  2. I can’t remember what I never knew, cool.
‘Toon: So, he’s responsible for that 7th grade class with that twit!
TH: Interesting, and emotionally gratifying, but maybe the thing to do IS to get rid of the act itself.
MJ: This POS may not leave the public scene until he is in jail, and theft’s only a hope.
Reuters: I knew that Vance has announced plans to retire at the end of the year, but had no idea about the race to replace him.
FFT: GQP: “Sure, we have an agenda, and democracy be damned!”
Manchin: I have signed a “thank you” card for him.

  3. TJI#1: Our unemployment system is the victim of our former, and criminal gov’r Scott, and who knows what else.
TJI#2: VAL DEMINGS all the way!!!!!!!!!
TJI#3: No one has insisted the POS leave office!  And, in his district, he’ll probably win another term…by bragging about how “Bad” he is.
TJI#4: I do not know about Gillibrand, but voting in favor of an equality for women is not in the GQP’s DNA.
TJI#5: So, did he get the permission, poor baby. You breaking the hallowed halls of our country’s legislative center, abuse it as part of an attempt to overthrow the duly elected gov’t, and you want to just go on with your rancid life?

  4. Cartoon: Good ole’ typewriter.
The Hill: Get to it. Do you remember tRump repealing all of President Obama’s acts? Now it’s time for the Democrats to take revenge on tRump’s acts.
MJ: Yikes! At first I thought the photo on MJ was rUbio with a cowboy hat. Keep him out.
Reuters: I hope Bragg does win. The more Democrats we can get in there, the better.Food for Thought: Shameful. Don’t deserve to hold government jobs.
    Manchin: I signed the card.
Wow, never knew you were into fashion designing. I too love the outfit you made for Vice President Harris. Reading all of the ones you’ve made of early years outfits sound beautiful. You’ll have to share the photos of them with us.
Hope you continue having a pleasant day. Take care. Thanks Joanne

  5. Eliminating Trump-era rules is comparable to Hercules’ Fifth Labor of cleaning the Augean Stables.  Good that the House has begun!

The scary thing is that Idaho is enough of a QAnon outlier that Bundy just might get elected.  *sad*

Whoever wins Manhattan DA – GET TRUMP – Family, henchmen & ALL!

It’s so wonderfully delightful to keep learning new tidbits about you!  While I’m not a doll fancier (and have no sewing skills beyond securing a button or closing an open wound), I am impressed with yours!

    • I have one of those CV’s that, if it were on a book jacket, would make people say, “Well, no wonder she’s an author – she can’t stick with anything else.”  And all or mostly totally unrelated.

  6. Cartoon: Apparently, there is a better placement of letters on the keyboard to facilitate learning how to type and make typing easier, but that obviously never caught on. Not with the investment in making qwerty keyboards and of those having learned how to use it.

TH: Yes, the House did good on that but will the Senate? It all seems so futile.

MJ: Please, not another right-wing religious nutjob.

Manchin’s vote to vote: I think Manchin deserves a very small thank you after he actually votes with all other Democrats on the voting rights act. This could still go either way with him and I think he doesn’t deserve more than a pat on the shoulder for doing what a Democrat should always do for a bill like this.

Thanks for sharing, Joanne. I never knew you once were a theatrical costumer too. From Kamala’s picture, it’s obvious you are a good one.

    • I worked a few years for the music department as a volunteer, and then the Theater Deprtment hired me for pay.  We have a huge inventory so I didn’t have to make much … though we did have a budget.  For “Measue for Measure” and “Lion in Winter” I, with a work study, made most of thee costumes.  The music department had a madrigal dinner tradition and gave us extra budget for any play that was vagguely in the time frame because they knew they’d get to use them later.  But the project i got the most recognition for wasn’t a costume but a quilt – 24 feet (almost 8 meters) square with a duplicate of each block for the musical “Quilters.”  UC Boulder saw it and begged to borrow it so they didn’t have to make one themselves – and had is and all the loose blocks dry cleaned before returning them.  I’ve kept the letter (and I still have one of the blocks – all the cast and crew got one afer it was returned and we disassembled it.)
