I had another heartwarming moment this morning. The New Mexico Political Report, which for the last four years has been focused on serious problems, like firefighting, and tragedies for immigrants (and for the last year pretty much just on CoViD), is today publishing fluffy profiles of State House members and State Senators. I realize we have a lot more problems ahead and shouldn’t forget that, but this feels like it really is over. It’s not a dream.
Cartoon – The crossed fingers behind the back (or do they use the white power sign instead?) is only for millioraires and poorer.

What a wonderful drawing of Amanda Gorman who truly lifted up the spirit of a dispirited nation after four years of Trump with her magnificent poem.
As a side note in case you weren’t aware, Amanda wore a ring and earrings that were a gift from Oprah Winfrey. It’s a tradition Oprah started when she gave Maya Angelou a Chanel coat and leather gloves to wear when she read “On the Pulse of Morning” at Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.
Amanda had already picked out her bright yellow Prada coat, so Oprah gave her the jewelry. If you note, the ring is an 18-karat gold vermeil caged bird – a nod to Angelou for her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.

How lovely – all lovely in appearance, and what a lovely gesture.
I’ve been musing on some other poets who have read at inaugurations. Being able to read Amanda’s life’s work and all the scholarship her work will generate in her lifetime would almost make it worth living to 130. But I certainly don’t expect to.
All my friends and relatives I speak here and in The Netherlands these days and who have watched the inauguration, speak of two things only. First Amanda Gorman’s poem and her rendition of it, which choked them up and then Joe Biden’s speech. They both made an impression on the rest of the world, but Amanda touched their hearts.
Lovely drawing of Amanda Gorman. I loved her poem, “The Hill We Climb”. Listening to her recite it at the inauguration, was so moving/heart touching. One that will be remembered for a long time. Thanks Joanne
