4th of July 2017

This article is a repeat of last year’s, with changes.

Traditionally I have celebrated Independence Day with excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, videos of the local fireworks display, and lessons on the differences between true patriotism and nationalism.  However, then the US was an independent nation.

Now it is under foreign domination. The Republican plague, Trump* virus is sweeping the nation and killing hundreds of thousands of Americans.  Trump* makes it worse with his super-spreader campaign events at taxpayer expense.  Racist Republican police are murdering Blacks with ever increasing frequency, while Bought Bitch Midnight Moscow Mitch and Senate Republicans prevent meaningful reform.  Trump* and his Republican Reich are spouting racist screeds and promoting White Supremacy like never before.

I’m sorry, but as long as Donald Trump*, Putin’s Puppet, and his Republican Reich stay in power, the 4th of July will be a day of mourning.

RESIST!!

  1. I hope we can all at least rest up some for the coming madness (conventions, campaigns, investigations, and the like).

Ken Burns talking about the Statue of Liberty (with help from James Baldwin)

Listening to Baldwin, I could not help but think of what John Quincy Adams didn’t actually say in the Amistad case, but what was so brilliantly written for his character in the movie —

Now, gentlemen, I must say I differ with the keen minds of the South, and with our President, who apparently shares their views, offering that the natural state of mankind is instead — and I know this is a controversial idea — is freedom.
    Is freedom.
And the proof is the length to which a man, woman, or child will go to regain it, once taken.
He will break loose his chains.
    He will decimate his enemies.
He will try and try and try against all odds, against all prejudices, to get home.

  2. Word.
Yep, you said it best, TomCat.

  3. Agreed, TC. Last night was a travesty in South Dakota. Four months to election, 7 1/2 until Biden is sworn in. 2022 is going to be even bigger with the 2010 republican Senators running again and many more republicans than Democrats. There is a future, Gen Z is going to change world far more than we boomers did, my grandchildren are in that group, 2000 and 2002, they’ve grown up in a multi cultural world, they have always had close friends of other or mixed races. And they are activists. I hope I live long enough to see what’s coming.

  4. Yep, tRump has turned our country upside down.
We will all stand strong and fight to get this rotten bas*ard out of office this coming November.
I feel most of his R buddies are going to be voted out too.
Then the Democrats can take back the house and finally get our country back into a positive direction. Moving up instead of downhill like tRump has taken us.
    Thanks TomCat

  5. let us hope soon this is more of a celebration for all persons….and that the US truly lives up to its name that ALL PERSONS ARE EQUAL…..
