In many, if not most, cities authorities are not fond of graffiti art – even though some of it is quite striking.  But in Milan, Italy they have come to admire the realistic 3-D work of Osimo Caiffa, aka “CHEONE”.

Cheone was born in 1979 in Gallipoli, a southern Italian town in the province of Lecce. At the age of 11 he moved with his family to Germany and began his career as a graffiti artist.

But after he moved back to Milan he transitioned and limited his paintings to “figurative realism”.  He incorporates the location of his “canvas” into every creation.  And he does not limit himself to just walls, but his art spills out onto sidewalks and roadways.

(He seems to limit his easel to abandoned industrial areas, but I couldn’t be sure because I don’t speak Italian.)

A good deal of his creations are 3-D, and in that sense viewing perspective means everything. Here’s a perfect example of that:

Let’s enjoy some of his works …

The dripping water faucet is the perfect foil for this painting.

I enjoy how he incorporates the louvered slats of the garage door into the frog or toad.

The toe sticking out of the hole in his sock is perfect whimsy.

Some fantastic “needlework”

No point in limiting your canvas.

Fun how a streetlight morphs into a candle.

Now that’s spooky!

This one made me smile.

But there was one I took strong objection to, and I’m curious if you’ll agree …

I think it’s very unwise to camouflage the Exit.

  1. Wow.  Brilliant.  Thanks also for the links, which I will get to – before the end of the weekend.

Camouflaging the exit cold be a serious problem if one is claustrophobic.  (I’m not – and that particular camouflage gives me a feeling of more space, not less.)  Since there are people wh are deathly claustrophobic, it probably shouldn’t be done – but it is gorgeous.

  2. Amazing!
These are absolutely brilliant, and most colorful !!
Thank you, Nameless for a great post!!

  3. Wonderful post, Nameless!

Cheone has taken trompe l’oeil to the streets and to new heights. Brilliant. I hope they are well preserved.

I agree with you. Even though Cheone has made the whole back wall into a visual exit, he has hidden the exit-door in that view, which won’t be tolerated by the fire-safety inspection for good reasons.

  4. Wonderful respite collection of beauty and whimsy Nameless…there is a graffiti artist in the US (NYC, etc.) that won the legal right to have a say in his work when property owner wants to do something that will remove or alter…some of the muralists enhancing public space in CA are rumored to have begun their careers this way–thank you

  5. That is just amazing stuff!
There is at least one fellow doing similar work here, in the U.S.A., but I’ve not seen his work for a good while now.
