ICONIC CLIMATE CHANGE PICTURE?

Cath Bowdler and Jack Egan lost just about everything when their North Rosedale home, south of Bateman’s Bay in coastal New South Wales, went up in flames. ABC NEWS 4 December 2020.*

After a few harrowing hours during which they didn’t know if the other had survived the ordeal, they returned to where their home had stood to survey what was left of their property after the blaze that hit on New Year’s Eve.

The pair made it through the emergency alive, but their home was reduced to a mass of warped iron, scorched wood and ash. Only a sign Mr Egan made to campaign for climate action somehow survived the blaze.

I didn’t expect the sign to make the point so strikingly as it does now,” Mr Egan noted and he had asked  Ms Bowdler take a photo of him by the sign with the remains of their home in the shot to make a point.

I think this foto may well turn out to become the most iconic and poignant Climate Change picture of 2020.

I know there’s a limit to how many NYT articles you can read per month, but I can highly recommend this opinion article: Australia Is Committing Climate Suicide. As record fires rage, the country’s leaders seem intent on sending it to its doom. By

  1. Wow.  Just wow.  The universe is trying to tell us something.

(As if the universe hadn’t been trying to tell us in every possible way for decades what was happening.  I can only hope that maybe some people will pay attention to this when they haven’t  o anything else.)

  2. This is so sad and heartbreaking!
Good picture of the vast waste of land by fire(s), and reading his sign.

I know the feeling of fires running unleashed, and even to this day, I worry over the smell of smoke. We didn’t lose our home, but many in the county did, and their animals.
Sadly, the fires were contained in our little town, but in your case, it’s the whole of Australia.

Prayers up for you Lona, alongside the many others too, and your wildlife.

  3. First, let me say how gratifying it is to see you back in the saddle again.  Your articles were sorely missed by us all. 20

The survival of that sign is pure karma.

I hope and pray that both the US and Australia dump our fascist Republican/Tory leaders and institute sound climate policy!   13

  4. This apocalyptic photo is really scary!

ETA: I should note that almost all “aluminum” tire rims are actually an alloy, and most likely have a bit lower melting point. But still hot as HELL!

  5. What is it going to take to make the climate-change deniers get their heads out of their arses?

  6. Humans are never going to learn. God help our children.

  7. OK ~ So what was all that about? I guess I’m suffering from trying to set up my Iphone!

  8. It breaks my heart to see the devastation. It seems as though Australia is a s bad at Climate action as the good old USA.
    God help us!

  9. Saw some pictures of new growth on trees that looked quite burned otherwise due to recent rain, thankfully.  Two other related articles I’d rather let speak for themselves:https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/01/06/stop-making-killing-planets-expense-climate-advocates-call-fossil-fuel-companieshttps://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/01/03/groundbreaking-study-finds-fingerprint-human-caused-climate-change-global-daily
