Who Won the Election… Eh?

The US has a northern neighbor, where fortunately, voters are considerably better informed than their willfully ignorant counterparts here in the US.  Yesterday Canadians went to the polls and reelected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.  Would be Crime Minister, Andrew Scheer, gained ground through disingenuous campaigning, but he did gain ground.

The Liberals are projected to win 157 seats, 13 short of a majority, and will find it harder to pass legislation in Mr Trudeau’s second term.

The opposition Conservatives are expected to win the popular vote but have not translated that into seats.

They are projected to take 121, up from the 95 they held before.

Although Monday night’s results saw a sharp decline in seats for the country’s left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), its leader, Jagmeet Singh, could become the kingmaker.

The NDP is projected to take 24 seats in the 338-seat parliament…

Fortunately the progressive NDP had agreed to work with the Liberals.  Although Trudeau will have a minority government, the Liberals and NDP will have a functional majority.  As long as they work together, Scheer’s Tories will be powerless to block them.

Here’s a video report.

Trudeau’s Liberal Party wins Canada’s general election

Kudos to Canada!

Fortunately we have an expert here at the site to flesh out my report.  For starters, I’d like our resident Sasquatch to explain the ‘Speech from the Throne’ to us.

  1. Readers Digest version – it could have been better, but it also could have been worse – a LOT worse.I too look forward to reading what Squatch has to say.  Don’t strain your hands, Lynn – write on your own computer in bits and pieces and quit before it hurts to much, save it all, and post it with cut and paste.

    • This just in – LONG LIVE CANADA!

      • Indeed the Kind Of Story We Need Right Now. Thanks for posting, JD!

        • What a great video, and this lady still hiking after the incident.
Glad that she is okay, and the cougar left the scene too.
          Metallica rocks!
Yes! This is the story we need right now.
          Thanks Joanne for video.

      • Poor Puddy Tat being subjected to Metallica! He/she was probably thinking “LUNCH!”.

Did you know that the highest concentration of cougars in the world is on Vancouver Island which is a big part of BC.  Beautiful animals but most often deadly.  They are known to have “hunted” near schools when young children are at recess or lunch.  Where I live we have “bear aware”.  On the Island, it is “cougar aware” more often than bear.

      • That Sasquatch was right!  As a Puddy Tat, I know the puddy tat was thinking of lunch.  That lady did look mighty tasty.  Not only should she have been honoured to see a puddy tat from the inside, but also, Metallica is cruel and unusual punishment!  12

  2. Good to know and read.
Thanks, Tom for the head’s up!

  3. Congratulations to all Canadians!

But we can all be happy that Canadian voters didn’t suffer from the usual political short-term memory failure that seems to crop up around election time everywhere and didn’t forget how abysmal times were under the conservative government before Trudeau. True, Trudeau wasn’t the golden boy they made him out to be, but then he started far more centrist than his campaign for the previous election had made it out to be, and he certainly got a few progressive accomplishments to his name.

Having to work with left-leaning NDP is good too, it’ll keep Trudeau on the straight and narrow path of progressive policies. He has to tred carefully, though, the right-wing is working on a comeback, and we all know how they do that.

  4. Here’s hoping Lynn can explain it to me like I’m a 3rd grader.

  5. It all sounds good, to me.  so, when this lady is “of age,” will she herself be “the Cougar?”

  6. I will put a piece together but it will take some time.  Also the Speech from the Throne will not happen until Parliament opens again.

If anyone wants some specific information please let me know asap.

As to this election, Trudeau fell short of a majority but the Conservatives have fewer seats.  Jagmeet Singh of the NDP have committed to working with the Liberals providing the Liberal agenda includes some of the NDP concerns.  The Bloc Québécois, a sovereignist party in Québec has more seats than the NDP but I would not expect help there.  As a result of the election and the defeat of the Conservative party, Western Canada (Alberta in particular) have ramped up separatist rhetoric.  No more “sunny days and sunny ways”!

    . . . this separatist bullshit!

  7. I look forward to seeing your piece, when you are able to do it without hurting yourself. 23

  8. Thanks and Hump Day Hugs to all! 35
