My God is the Lord. That’s the meaning of the name Elijah, and his parents named Elijah Cummings well. Throughout his too-short life, he dedicated himself tirelessly to his faith, to his nation, to his community, and to anyone he could help in any way. His passing leaves a terrible void in the fabric of our nation, and except for the Republican Reich, we shall miss him.
Elijah E. Cummings, a Democratic congressman from Maryland who gained national attention for his principled stands on politically charged issues in the House, his calming effect on anti-police riots in Baltimore, and his forceful opposition to the presidency of Donald Trump, died Oct. 17 at a hospice center in Baltimore. He was 68.
The cause was “complications concerning long-standing health challenges,” his office said in a statement. Mr. Cummings was chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and a leading figure in the Trump impeachment inquiry and had been out of his office this week while recovering from an unspecified medical procedure.
Born to a family of Southern sharecroppers and Baptist preachers, Mr. Cummings grew up in the racially fractured Baltimore of the 1950s and 1960s. At 11, he helped integrate a local swimming pool while being attacked with bottles and rocks. “Perry Mason,” the popular TV series about a fictional defense lawyer, inspired him to enter the legal profession.
“Many young men in my neighborhood were going to reform school,” he told the East Texas Review. “Though I didn’t completely know what reform school was, I knew that Perry Mason won a lot of cases. I also thought that these young men probably needed lawyers.”…

I shared just a peek at Cumming’s early life. Click through for an extensive review of his heroic life.
Here is what I saw on TV, in which I first learned of his death.

My God !!! So very sad.
I loved this man from afar, he was so right and good for this country. He was a true Patriot, and an extraordinary Statesman, and cared deeply for all of us, and this Country. Such a kind man.
My heart is heavy, and I teared up this morning reading about his passing in the news.
May the Lord find a special place for him in the Heavens. Condolences to his wife, Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings and his family. The country mourns right along side with her.
Rest in Eternal Peace, Sir. We have the Watch.
Thank you for sharing the newsTomCat.
Oh, my God, what a loss. I didn’t know until I read this, and I just have no words.
One thing that comes back to me now is AOC’s description of what happened when she applied for the Oversight Committee. We can be confident that the Committe he chose will be the best possible committee that it can be without him. That is what a real leader does.
(Incidentally, they got his middle name right too. “Eugene.” Well born.)
Here is what Ilhan Omar had to say:
I expect to get more commemoratins; this was just the first one to arrive.
What a terrible shock. Elijah Cummings was by far my favourite politician, a man that stood out among fellow politicians all over the world. A politician with a heart and a soul and courageous as well. Men like Elijah Cummings are hard to come by and difficult to replace. He’ll be sadly missed by his family and friends and by the nation. My condolences to all.
What a loss….for out country today.
I was shocked to hear of his passing this morning on the news, while I was getting ready for my appointments.
I like others had high regards/respect for Rep. Elijah Cummings.
He did so much for the people. Treated them with dignity.
He will be sorely missed.
My condolences to his family and friends.
When I read on CNN yesterday morning that Elijah Cummings had passed, I was devastated for his family, for the nation and for the world. What a giant among all people. Elijah Cummings was one that you could think would always be here. For that to be, we must carry his banner high going forward.
CNN wrote of the many tributes to Elijah Cummings. The article has many tributes so keep scrolling passed the ads. Do I respect the fairness that Cummings stood for or do I comment further with Trump’s reaction. Knowing Trump as we do, his words are at odds with his previous words and actions. Who would say “warmest condolences”?
Rest in Peace good and faithful servant.
Thanks and rushed TGIF hugs to all.
