Democrats, Knock It Off!

If I wake up in the middle of a political wet dream, and I am ripped from sleep by members of my own party drenching my naked body with ice water, I can tell that I am a Democrat.  In 2008, there was a struggle between Clinton and Obama.  Almost 5% of Democrats, angry that Clinton lost, voted for McCain.  In 2016, angry that Bernie lost, over 10% of Bernie supporters voted for Trump.  Are we starting for 2020 already?  Democrats, knock it off!

…From canapé-filled fund-raisers on the coasts to the cloakrooms of Washington, mainstream Democrats are increasingly worried that their effort to defeat President Trump in 2020 could be complicated by Mr. Sanders, in a political scenario all too reminiscent of how Mr. Trump himself seized the Republican nomination in 2016.

How, some Democrats are beginning to ask, do they thwart a 70-something candidate from outside the party structure who is immune to intimidation or incentive and wields support from an unwavering base, without simply reinforcing his “the establishment is out to get me”’ message — the same grievance Mr. Trump used to great effect?

But stopping Mr. Sanders, or at least preventing a contentious convention, could prove difficult for Democrats.

He has enormous financial advantages — already substantially outraising his Democratic rivals — that can sustain a major campaign through the primaries. And he is well positioned to benefit from a historically large field of candidates that would splinter the vote: If he wins a substantial number of primaries and caucuses and comes in second in others, thanks to his deeply loyal base of voters across many states, he would pick up formidable numbers of delegates…

This is the worst thing establishment Democrats could do.  Look at this video:

Bernie’s campaign is behaving just as badly.  They are fundraising with the message “The Democratic establishment and high-dollar donors are already planning how to stop our campaign. They are terrified of our movement — as they should be.”  That will only frighten establishment Democrats more, a very unwise choice.

In the end, no matter who wins have a massive bloc of resentful lefties, who feel anger toward and unrepresented by the winning candidate.  How insane!

Democrats need to knock it off. If you support Bernie, support him. If you support someone else, support them. If we allow our disagreements to become feuds, whoever wins our nomination will be too battered and bloody to win the general. Let’s compete on issue and let the voters choose the individuals. And when we have a nominee, we ALL need to get behind them with enthusiastic support. The alternative is four more years of Republican tyranny.

RESIST!!

  1. Well, this is discouraging. Of course you are correct – I just said the same thing in the Open Thread before I had read this article. Unfortunaltely, I am the only person I can force to be courteous. Although I can certainly advise (and there are others doing so.) Just between us, I am very tired of fearing for my country.

  2. Good point, and well taken, Tom.
We need to make a united front, with no malice, otherwise we’ll be left behind…imo. We can’t afford to not win, no matter who, and yes!, by all means support the democratic nominee and have his or her back. ALL the way, to the WH.

  3. NYT: So, maybe it would behove the mainstream Dems to wise up, and support Bernie, themselves??!!  I can’t believe that, well maybe aI can (people of any stripe can be soooo stupid) that 10% of Bernie supporters voted for the Orange POS!
MSNBC: I’m guessing Bernie feels a need to separate himself from the pack, but he starts out that way, from the get-go.  “Democrats need to knock it off.”–AMEN!

  4. How can anyone know what % of Bernie supporters voted for trump?

There are corporate centrist democrats & socialist democrats, it’s time to know the difference.
Bernie is way ahead in polls, donations & popularity but main stream media is often not reporting this.

Also -“The matter of What To Do About Bernie and the larger imperative of party unity has, for example, hovered over a series of previously undisclosed Democratic dinners in New York and Washington organized by the longtime party financier Bernard Schwartz. The gatherings have included scores from the moderate or center-left wing of the party, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi; Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader; former Gov. Terry McAuliffe of Virginia; Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., himself a presidential candidate; and the president of the Center for American Progress (CAP), Neera Tanden.”

Bitching between supporters is unavoidable & can be healthy BUT bitching within the democratic party is crazy & can’t end well!!

i’m watching this evolve daily on Twitter!

  5. That picture is all too true. All too often, Democrats are their own worst enemies. Unless they get their doo-doo together, we’re going to have four more years of Agent Orange.

  6. I agree with you TC. and many others that the Democrats need to get the butts into the right gear.

  7. It is a fact that the average Democrat is better educated tan its GOP counterpart, so one would expect them to be smarter too. And one would expect the same from Democratic politicians, but if learning from past mistakes is any indication of smartness, they are acting pretty dumb now. Get over your egos, gils and boys – big egos are soooo Republican – and this time do what is in the best interest of the country. So stop qualifying and confusing and annoying your voters and stand behind the person who will take America out of the mess it is in now.

  8. When I was a bank manager, the staff all had sales targets to meet as part of their performance.  Sometimes, the competition between individual staff members could be cut-throat.  I would tell them that their competition was with other banks, not with each other.  For every client brought in through the front door one left through the back door because staff were competing with each other.  Stay focused on who the real competition is.  This is essentially what happened in 2016 and threatens to happen again.

As you say Puddy Tat, knock it off Democrats!!!

“…when we have a nominee, we ALL need to get behind them with enthusiastic support. “

  9. Thanks and Hugs to all. I am blaming both sides. of this argument.  13
