From NY Times: The tax preparers at H&R Block had to take a new class before their busy season started this year: empathy training.
They listened to a mock exchange between an employee and a customer whose refund would not just shrink but disappear. The fictitious client had received a $1,500 refund last year, but this year would owe $575.
The playacting was prescient. The tax overhaul that took effect last year promised relief, but now that returns are being filed, some people are baffled. They’re getting smaller refunds — or sometimes having to write a check — even though nothing in their situation seems to have changed.
The average refund among early filers was down 8.4 percent, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
If you are not a millionaire, and if you actually thought that the Republican Tax Scam would do something for YOU, bend over, grab your ankles, and say BAAA-A-A-A-A-A!! RESIST!!

El Paso – “Socialists are coming for your money – coming for your freedom” – meaning, coming to take them away (we aren’t). I prefer the way Stacey Abrams uses the phrase – “I knew you were coming for me (i.e., coming to pick me up and take me to safety)” – and in that sense she says, correctly I hope, that “we are coming for you, America!”
Rachel – Off topic, but some of those fireworks are televised every year on PBS as part of a Fourth of July concert. 7:00 pm Mountain and I assume Central, repeated at 8:30 – so, on the coasts probably 8:00 pm repeated at 9:30. Too bad he missed it. Does he think he is John Adams or something? John was one of the least leftist of the Founding Fathers, but he wasn’t nearly that bad. I was thinking the other day that Hans Christian Andersen must have been terribly naive. What would really happen when the kid cries, “The Emperor has no clothes!” would be that the kid would be shut up and dragged off to a reeducation camp, maybe at Guantanamo, along with the parents who raised such a dangerous criminal. It’s not, I presume, illegal to donate to something political after it is over. For one thing, campaigns can rack up debts, which aren’t automatically wiped out when the campaign (or whatever it is) is over. But – this was ridiculous. I remember at times during my lifetime having feelings of pride that our officials could not be bought – at the same time realizing that that state of affairs was not a given but needed to be maintained with substantial effort. Good thing titles cannot be copyrighted, because the title for a book or movie about how we got here really should be called “While You Were Sleeping.”
NYT – None of the professional tax accountants was fooled for an instant. But who listens any more to people who know what they are talking about? Frankly, I was worried myself, but, for this year at least, my situation stayed the same: nothing withheld, nothing owed, just sent the papers in.

All the bozos who howl about socialism have no idea how much they benefit from “evil socialism.” Public schools, public libraries, public transit, public utilities, public police and fire departments, publicly funded infrastructure – I could go on and on. The dips that call for minimal government will soon be screaming for more government intervention when their tap water is undrinkable, their roads are a mess, their wages won’t make ends meet, and they are living in tents because their houses burned to the ground in the last wildfire.
I’m so glad that we took the House in November and that the House is investigating dumpy’s money trail.

Sorry, I got up at 4:30 AM this morning after hardly any sleep, picked up my hubby from the airport and doused myself with a codeine cough mixture after the 5 hour drive, to and fro, to get this tickling cough that prevented me from sleeping under control.
