Here is the one hundred thirty-second article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s honoree is Ammosexual Republican Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. She is so honored for trying to spend funds intended to educate students on putting guns in school classrooms.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is considering allowing states to use federal grant money to buy guns for schools, people familiar with the matter said.
Two people said the question has been raised inside the department as to whether states are allowed to use money available through Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants to buy firearms. Unlike other federal grants, this one does not expressly prohibit such purchases.
Allowing schools to use federal money to buy firearms would fuel anger among those who say the response to school shootings should be fewer guns, not more. But it could find support among gun rights advocates who say that having firearms in schools would make them less likely to be targeted.
“The department is constantly considering and evaluating policy issues, particularly issues related to school safety,” said Education Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill. “The secretary nor the department issues opinions on hypothetical scenarios.”… [emphasis added]

Whenever the Republican Reich evaluates policy issues, they are really floating a trial balloon to see how big a stink they’ll get.
I was surprised to discover that I’ve never given DeVos a parade before. She was certainly overdue. Betsy’s brother is Eric Prince, founder of the GOP SS, Blackwater. When their reputation became so bad it was costing them, they changed their name to Xe. They trashed their reputation again and changed their name to Academi. It wouldn’t surprise me Betsy plans to line the family pockets with federal dollars by sending mercenary thugs to teach white supremacist teachers to blow away naughty Latino students.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Betsy deserved a parade when she made the comment (and, sorry, I didn’t look it up, so this will be a paraphrase) that she was tired of being accused of buying influence, so she decided to admit that, yes, a political contribution is an investment on which they want and expect a return. This really is but a cherry on the sundae. But far better late than never.
RESIST AND PERSIST!
Re: balance in journalism
Outstanding graphic . . . and oh so true!!! Well done!
That is sooooo wonderful! From whence doth one searchest for these thinges?
Right here, Mitch. The backgrounds, figures, and fonts are all there, but you have to do your own “translation” from modern English. Good clean fun.
Now if we could only instill THAT kind of common sense in republicans, we’d all be better off!
Absolutely wonderful graphic and text. Spot on in whatever time and language.
Ditto Squatch, Mitch, Nameless, and Lona!
I am so against this, I could scream.
DeVos should be assigned school duty or teaching for a minimum of 3 or more years to observe, elementary, middle, HS, college classes before letting this happen. Minimally.Teachers aren’t being paid a decent wage, or increase of medical benefits in healthcare. They (schools) are understaffed. Not enough school supplies for students. Having guns changes the focus of teachers to carrying weapons on campus, with no pay increase, nor reflections of the dangers of implementing this. This is a clear danger to our little ones in Pre-K, or kinder, (elementary) levels and on up, really. Use the money for helping these kids, NOT for using federal $$ to buy firearms!
She deserves to be the head of the parade, send in the clowns. Good grief!
Betsy DeVil’s plan reminds us just how much the Rethuglicans are beholden, not so much to gun freaks as to firearms manufacturers, the real beneficiary of lax gun policies.
Apparently, guns are the only form of birth control that Rethuglicans can accept.
“…guns are the only form of birth control that Rethuglicans can accept.” — Right on Freya! AMEN!!!
You KNOW I’m stealing that one!
Freya puts it so succinctly! It is the munitions industry that the NRA works for, and it is the munitions industry that Dumpy, and Pence, want to reward with their imbecilic Space War crap!
Betsy is just another of the cabinet members chosen for their total disregard for anything but making money for one, or another, industry!
Petition on DeVos from Senator Chris Murphy
Signed, thanks for posting, Joanne.
Signed! Thanks!
DeVos is an evil, EVIL person!
More guns are never the answer. These are not colonial times when there was little in the way of extensive trained law enforcement.
As Pat says, teachers are grossly underpaid as it is, but now added to their burden will be the responsibility to ‘pack heat’? What if a teacher is against guns in schools and refuses to carry a gun. Does that mean that their job could be forfeit when their contract is up, or sooner? With the way I see things in the US, I see that as a very real possibility and that disgusts me. Teachers are paid to teach students, not to be police officers. Betsy DeVos is a sorry excuse for an education secretary let alone a human being.
When many of us were children, we played cops and robbers, and of course the cops always won. But we grew out of that game. In life, the cops don’t always win. They get hurt or killed by guns too. It seems to me that it is past time for a nationwide attitude adjustment towards guns for everyone’s sake. Start by developing much stricter gun control. For those with guns, ask yourself, when was the last time I used that gun in defense of my family. Do I really need it? (separate need and want).
The US and Canada have similar backgrounds but the US has substantially more mass shootings (7.3 deaths/100,000 in the US compared to 1.0 deaths per 100,000 in Canada — source Global News). Also from the same article,
“Overall, Americans are almost 70 per cent more likely to die at the end of a gun — shot by someone else, by themselves, by accident — than Canadians are to die in a car accident.”
So why again is Betsy DeVos allowing guns in schools?
I don’t care this “policy” put forward by DeVos is only to test the waters. Just the idea that federal grant money, which should go to giving students who need it support, should now go to the weapons industry, makes me sick to my stomach, let alone the repercussions of introducing even more more guns and trigger-happy gun-toting idiots into schools.
Betsy DeVos is a despicable person and very competent at the job she was given to do by Drumpf and the GOP: undermine the education of every child in the US except for those of the white and religious 1%. For wanting to protect those rich kids by taking grants away from those who deserve them and enriching the Republican fathers of those rich kids, including her own brother, she deserves a place of honour in the Parade.
Thanks, hugs and amen.
