Dump Bought Bitch Mitch

As you know, I have often said that not all Republicans are beyond redemption.  Most just act that way.  I have said that there is a remedy for the vile infestation of greed, hate, and violence that identifies the Republican Reich.  That is to come out from among them and renounce their crimes.  One month and one day ago, long term political strategist, Steve Schmidt, did exactly that, making him welcome among decent humans.  He has a suggestion about Senate Majority Leader, Bought Bitch Mitch [R-KY].

0720BBMitchFuhrer

Former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who recently renounced his Republican affiliation and left the party, pulled no punches when it comes to Mitch McConnell. Schmidt noted the Senate Majority Leader has been “up to his eyeballs” in this entire Russian affair and makes the case that it is time for Republican senators to remove Mitch McConnell from power and elect a new Senate Majority Leader who will right the ship

Even as former Senator Harry Reid and Democrats were trying to sound the alarm about Russia’s cyberattacks and propaganda campaigns in the summer of 2016, Mitch McConnell refused President Obama’s calls for a bipartisan statement alerting the public. From an NBC News interview with President Obama’s former White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough:

“The president asked the four leaders in a bipartisan meeting in the Oval Office to join him in asking the states to work with us on this question,” McDonough said. “It took over three weeks to get that statement worked out. It was dramatically watered down."

Asked if it was watered down at the insistence of McConnell and only McConnell, McDonough responded, “yes.”

Former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid had Mitch McConnell and Republicans absolutely nailed when he gave this speech on the floor of the United States Senate in June 2016. He implored them to stop enabling Trump’s racism and vile rhetoric. Two years later the problem is worse than we ever could have imagined…. [emphasis added]

Here is the same video as the one embedded in the source article, but from a different source and in a different format.

I’m sure Schmidt still leans far enough right that I will often disagree with him, but agreeing with me has never been a prerequisite for my respect, which Schmidt now deserves.  It’s too bad that the chances Senate Republicans will dump Bought Bitch Mitch are virtually nil.

From Alternet: Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) introduced a measure on Thursday to designate additional funding to states for the protection of elections.

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) spoke in support of the measure, saying, the federal government should help “slam the door in the face of the Russian bear or any other adversary who seeks to steal the integrity of our elections."

Hoyer explained that the amendment was about "one of the most pressing issues of our time."

“Surely we can rise above pandering to party and Putin to act on behalf of our freedom and our security,” he continued. “We have sworn an oath to defend our Constitution and our liberty against all enemies, foreign and domestic. What a disgrace in Helsinki!  Someone failed to inform Twitler that “Summit” is NOT spelled “S-u-b-m-i-t”.

Finally coming to the realization of what an abject failure his traitorous performance was, Trump demands a “Do-Over” and tries to salvage at least a little bit by declaring an “Oopsie” and changing what he actually said ( and truly meant):

“I have President Putin. He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this. I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

With his  bend-over-backwards-tie-me-in-linguistics-knots attempt to clarify with a “sort of double negative” – basically admitting that his own words were “fake news”:

“In a key sentence in my remarks I said the word ‘would’ instead of ‘wouldn’t.’  The sentence should have been: ‘I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia.’ Sort of a double negative.  So, you can put that in, and I think that probably clarifies things pretty good by itself.”

Clarifies?  Ahhh, no – not really.  But Twitter elected to have fun with his would – wouldn’t flip-flop.

Clearly the most straightforward (and sadly, truest) is that Trump got mixed up about what he was supposed to say because his text was badly translated from the original Russian.

And that opened the floodgates with Kim Jong Un wanting to take advantage of that precedent

The most important thing for Twitler?  He added in with his Sharpie “There was no colusion (sic)”.  Of course that “stable genius” (as he refers to himself) couldn’t spell it correctly.

But most folks on Twitter had fun with seeing what kind of impact the “would-wouldn’t” switcheroo have on movies:

Apollo 13 actually went quite well:

And Dorothy actually felt right at home:

And of course the “Star Wars” series would be forever changed:

Why, they even revived the much-loathed and mocked “Clippy” to try to help Twitler out with his editing – but I don’t think even Clippy can save Twitler.

Worst of all – that was just Act I.  Putin is now coming to America to see what HIS new country looks like.

Trump Lies about his Lie

In Helsinki, when Donnie Diaper Dump was bending over in front of Putin and holding his ankles, a reporter asked if Trump believed his own intelligence agencies about Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election, Trump said that he would have no reason to believe that Russia had done so.  His lie created such an uproar, even within the Republican Reich, that Trump walked it back with a lie about his lie.

0718putin holding baby donald

Facing withering criticism over Monday’s deferential joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, President Trump asserted Tuesday that he misspoke when he said that Russia had not interfered with the U.S. presidential election.

“Let me begin by saying that once again, full faith and support for America’s intelligence agencies. I have a full faith in our intelligence agencies,” Trump said, in a prepared statement.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said that after reviewing a transcript of the press conference he realized that “in a key sentence I said the word ‘would’ instead of ‘wouldn’t.’”

“Just to repeat it, I said the word would instead of wouldn’t,” Trump said, referring to his answer at the press conference, in response to a question about whether Russia had tried to influence the American election: “All I can do is ask the question — my people came to me, Dan Coats came to me and some others, they said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin he just said it’s not Russia. I will say this, I don’t see any reason why it would be,” Trump had said, in a remark that stunned listeners and provoked outrage, even from many Republicans.

Blasted for questioning the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russian operatives had meddled in the election — also a subject of more than two dozen indictments by the Department of Justice — Trump seemed more open to the intelligence findings, but continued to qualify his remarks. “I accept our intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election took place,” he said. “Could be other people also. A lot of people out there.”

And after attempting to explain his choice of words, Trump again insisted that his campaign had not colluded with the Russians during the election…. [emphasis added]

Note that even when lying about his lie, he went back to his original lie.

Lawrence O’Donnell cover this story in depth.

The statement that he misspoke contradicts everything else that he said in Helsinki.

The most disgusting thing about this is that Republican lawmakers are scurrying back to Trump, accepting his lie about his lie, when they obviously know better.  By doing so, they inherit an equal share of Trump’s treason.

Why it matters: Torshin, who has been described as a "godfather" in a Russian organized crime syndicate, has been under FBI investigation for potentially funneling money through the NRA to help President Trump win the 2016 election. The notoriously pro-Russia Rohrabacher did not deny being the congressman referenced in the document, but said that the charge against Maria Butina is "bogus," according to Politico.

Treason

According to Article III of the US Constitution Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason.  Many have argued that, there can be no treason, because the US is not at war.  However, the evidence in indictments of Russian GRU Officers, make it clear that Russia committed an act of War against the US by interfering with our electoral process, and that state will continue as long as the result that attack occupies the oval office.  Therefore the aid and comfort Trump provided for Putin yesterday qualifies as treason.

0717TrumpTraitor

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a joint press conference on Monday — and the two men both made multiple jaw-dropping statements.

During the event, Trump and Putin repeatedly showered each other with praise, and the two men regularly defended one another from criticisms being leveled against them within the United States and from other NATO allies.

Below are the most jaw-dropping moments of the Trump-Putin press conference.

1. Putin trolls America by offering to have his own intelligence agencies “investigate” their interference in the 2016 presidential election — and Trump praises him for it. Putin’s offer to have his own intelligence officials probe themselves was generally seen as an attempt to subtly mock the United States, since no one believes the GRU would fairly investigate its own activities.

Trump, however, called Putin’s proposal an “incredible offer.”

2. Trump denies a report that he called Putin a “rival” — and insists that what he actually said was meant to be flattering. When asked by a Russian reporter why he had referred to his Russian counterpart as a rival, Trump pushed back and said he’d only referred to Putin a “competitor.” Trump went on to say that he meant it as a “compliment” because Putin was so good at competing.

3. Trump would not say whether he believes his own intelligence agencies when they claim Russia directly interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Even though Trump hedged on whether he believed his own appointees to the nation’s intelligence agencies, he did say that Putin was “extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.” He then said that he “didn’t see any reason” why Russia would interfere in America’s elections…

For 28 minutes of in depth coverage, here’s Rachel Maddow.

Even some Republicans were critical of Trump varying degrees.

  • Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE): "This is bizarre and flat-out wrong. The United States is not to blame. America wants a good relationship with the Russian people but Vladimir Putin and his thugs are responsible for Soviet-style aggression. When the President plays these moral equivalence games, he gives Putin a propaganda win he desperately needs."
  • Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC): "Missed opportunity by President Trump to firmly hold Russia accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a strong warning regarding future elections. This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russia as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves. … if it were me, I’d check the soccer ball [that Putin gave Trump] for listening devices and never allow it in the White House."
  • Sen. John McCain (R-AZ): "Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake. President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world."
  • Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC): Vladimir Putin is not our friend and never has been. Nor does he want to be our friend. His regime’s actions prove it. We must make clear that the United States will not tolerate hostile Russian activities against us or our allies."
  • Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA): "For the president to cast doubt is not unreasonable … Having said that, Putin is an evil man."
  • Rep. Pete King (R-NY): "[I] strongly disagree" with Trump’s statement that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 election. "[I’m] disappointed, not flabbergasted." King added that having Russia cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller "would be like bringing ISIS into a joint terrorism task force."
  • House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI): "There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world. That is not just the finding of the American intelligence community but also the House Committee on Intelligence. The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals. The United States must be focused on holding Russia accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy."

Most have remained silent.  One is goose-stepping, Idiot, Son of Idiot, Named after Idiot, Rand Paul.

While President Donald Trump’s statements on Russia at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin were widely condemned by a group of bipartisan lawmakers, at least one US senator took a stand and said he was "absolutely" with the president.

"I think engagement with our adversaries, conversations with our adversaries, is a good idea," Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said during an interview with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer. "Even in the height of the Cold War, I think it was a good thing that [President John F. Kennedy] had a direct line to [Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev]."

Paul then went beyond backing Trump’s comments and blamed partisan leanings for the ongoing outrage.

"I think there is a bit of Trump-derangement syndrome," Paul said. "I think there are people who hate the president so much that this could’ve easily been President Obama early in his first administration setting the reset button and trying to have better relations with Russia."…  [emphasis added]

Disgusting!  Hannity called it a Witch Hunt.

This how I see it.  Republicans face a crossroads.  Those who goose-step, stay silent, and voice meaningless platitudes also giving aid and comfort to the enemy are are as guilty as Trump.  Those who join hands with Democrats to oppose Russia and Trump deserve another chance.  Sadly, there will be far too few.
