To quote a man who is underappreciated by progressives (and overappreciated by others who don’t grasp some of what he really accomplished) – “Wunnerful, wunnerful.”
That would be Lawrence Welk, correct?
Yup. Just one of the thinks he did was hire Arthur Duncan as a regular, the first black regular in a varity show in the US, more than 50 years before Flip Wilson He also featured Latino music before that was cool (before he could even get a singer with a Hispanic name), featured Big Band leaders like Duke Ellington amd Count Basie, considering them his teachers (and mighty proud to say it), fixated on Dixieland jazz (that was his favorite, and you’d better be able to play it and play it well). He was also tremendously proud of what diversity he did have, even at times when it wasn’t much, and showed that on air. Some of his singers i think were the steel-bar-up-the-spine conservatives we all know an can’t stand. He was better than that.
Wow! Learned a huge amount about Mr. Welk – I had no idea he did any of those things.
My best friend’s Dad and his “girlfriend” (he was a widower, and the next door neighbor lady would spend evenings watching TV) wouldn’t miss Lawrence Welk for anything!
