A Blueprint for Success

I trust the mere mention of Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) is enough to make you cringe.  He is, after all, the author of infamous Nunes Memo.  In addition, he is the sphincter that shut down the investigation into Trump’s crimes by the House Intelligence committee with the finding that Trump is innocent of any wrongdoing.  The Democrats on that committee learned of this when Nunes released the results, making the relationship between Putin,Trump, and the Republican Reich self-evident.  He has, however, shown us a blueprint for success.

0326NUNES-Trump

On a balmy February evening, nearly 150 volunteers gathered in a small office park in California’s Central Valley, home to the North Fresno field office of Democratic congressional candidate Andrew Janz. Most have never been actively involved in politics, but they believe the 34-year-old Fresno County Deputy District Attorney has what it takes to unseat their congressman, Republican Rep. Devin Nunes, and turn California’s 22nd congressional district from red-to-blue. While projections show that Nunes is still safe in the upcoming 2018 elections, momentum against the incumbent has been building.

Nunes is widely perceived to be no more than a surrogate for President Donald Trump thanks to his mismanagement of, and subsequent recusal from, the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 election. So much so, that the district’s leading newspaper, The Fresno Bee, which had previously endorsed Nunes, labelled him “Trump’s stooge” in January. Nunes now refers to the paper as a “left-wing rag.”

Then, there’s the infamous “Nunes Memo.” Reaction to the memo among Janz’s supporters is visceral; its contents, a source of derision. Their congressman’s staunch support of the president is not, however, the sole factor that has brought these activists together.

Nancy Gilmore, a retired engineer and lifelong Democrat from nearby Clovis said there are people in desperate need of help and Nunes has been unresponsive to their needs. “He’s voted against air quality, EPA regulations, clean drinking water. Very baseline health issues. There’s the whole Russia thing, but what’s most concerning is his complete and utter disregard for this district.”

Gilmore believes Janz has a fighting chance. “When Pennsylvania happened, it was like, wow, this could happen here,” she told ThinkProgress, referring to Democrat Conor Lamb’s recent surprising victory in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district… [emphasis added]

There can be no doubt that the Reich loves Nunes, and we support Andrew Janz.

But consider this.  In spite of all the horrid things Nunes has done, the thing that was most concerning to the people willing to work to support Janz is that Nunes showed complete and utter disregard for their district.  Focusing on the issues that are important to the residents of each district, and not on what we think should be important to them, is out blueprint for success.  That’s what Conor Lamb did.  There are dozens of federal elected offices and far more state and local offices, where Republicans are disregarding the needs of their constituents.  Helping local activists position themselves to meet those needs is our best plan to…

RESIST THE REPUBLICAN REICH!!

  1. You are SO right. Living in a District where the incumbent is a – well, I’m not sure what to call him – he bills himself as “the most Conservative member of Congress,” and he ain’t talkin’ about the environment, believe me – we have continually failed to unseat himon issues OR character. And he has got this down. He assumed office in 2007, so he is now in his 12th year, and is starting to send literature for his 2018 re-election campaign. He has sent two huge postcards. The first stresses satisfied constituents whom he (I’m sure the real work was done by his staff) has helped resolve issues with the government. The second stresses how wonderful the “Tax and Jobs Act” is for Colorado (some fact checking would be good there, but voters are unlikely to see any, even if we try.) In his emails, he waxes eloquent about his efforts to get Colorado a new national cemetery – which certainly would help DEAD veterans. Wouldn’t do much for live ones. We should have a candidate … but he will probably romp home again.

  2. What you commented, Tom, is par for these republicons!

Get this slimeball out, and get Mr. Janz in!!

  3. Future historians and students of history will wonder how the Blue Blazes the USA survived the tRump regime.

Provided, of course, that it does.

  4. The history of this period in U.S. politics will fuel bigly numbers of political science, sociology, and history Ph.D. papers!
Nunes is what we used to call a pig!

  5. Nunes = ???

First and foremost, Nunes must be kicked out of the House by the voters of his own district. And hopefully replaced by Andrew Janz.

Yes, new candidates will have a better chance winning if they listen to their constituents in their own district, but then their campaign must be a realistic combination of representation of their district and voting on larger issues in the House with what’s best for that district in mind. Don’t go “Tea Party”or “Freedom Caucus” on voters in the district; don’t promise them the moon and then turn around and do the exact opposite, or vote against everything because it’s not exactly what these voters want or isn’t extreme enough for them. Democrats need to find a balance instead between what they heard their voters in the district need and what the country needs. Sometimes, and hopefully most of the time, they are the same. If not, Democrats need to be accountable for decisions that go against the best interest of their voters, something Republicans never ever are.

    • I fully agree.  While basing their campaigns on what their constituents need, they must never run on blue sky, the way regressive candidates like Jill Stein do.

  6. Nunes is a contemptible little twit who has no business in government.  He reminds me of the worst used car salesman trying to curry favour with the boss who is an unethical POS.  May Janz put an end to Nunes political career in high style!

  7. Thanks and hugs.  A progressive Democrat is best, but a moderate Democrat is better than a fascist Republican.  10

    • Apropos of which, Republicans in West Virginia have a candidate on their primary ballot who makes Joe Manchin look like Sir Galahad – Don Blankenship.  He doesn’t have the nomination yet, but he has a lot of money and zero scruples.
