Boycott Facebook

I cannot quit Facebook.  I resigned many years ago, for several reasons.  Changes in their privacy policy, their association with Goldman Sachs, seeing fine bloggers succumb to entertaining but meaningless pursuits, and seeing myself wasting far too much time there all contributed to my decision.  Now I’m convinced that Facebook actively colluded with Russia (and possibly the Trump campaign) to interfere in our 2016 election.

Representatives of Facebook told congressional investigators Wednesday that the social network has discovered that it sold ads during the U.S. presidential campaign to a shadowy Russian company seeking to target voters, according to several people familiar with the company’s findings.

Facebook officials reported that they traced the ad sales, totaling $100,000, to a Russian β€œtroll farm” with a history of pushing pro-Kremlin propaganda, these people said.

A small portion of the ads, which began in the summer of 2015, directly named Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, the people said, although they declined to say which candidate the ads favored…

There is actually far more to this story than meets the eye.  In fact, it takes Rachel Maddow almost twenty minutes to explain it.

In short, Facebook would not have engaged in months of denials, were they not covering up their own collusion and betraying our nation for profit.  The only way to punish them is by taking away their business.  I recommend pulling the plug.

RESIST THE REPUBLICAN REICH!!

  1. Might not be a bad idea before joining/registering for anything to check this site up front and find out how hard it will be to get out if you later want or need to.    Facebook is considered “Medium”, as is Linked In.  I once had to remove a deceased colleague (whose family didn’t do it – they were not as computer literate as he) from Linked In, and it was tedious, but possible.

I have never been on Facebook, and have no plans to.  Same with Twitter.  I’m avoiding Pinterest and YouTube  because they are acting so much like social groups.  Not that this is enough to protect me from seeing junk advertising … though I can train them some.

Have I not read that Mark Zuckerberg is thinking of running for President in 2020?  Srsly?

  2. I, also, have never been on FB, but had to be tutored about how to exit Linked-In about a year ago, or more.  Technology remains a double-edged sword!

  3. I am on Facebook, mainly because Ancestry.com bought out MyFamily.com & my far-flung & distant cousins had all joined FB…and my close sisters (who dislike email, but know how to FB)..so I’m on it. Don’t like it, have blocked bunchs of trolls, one of my distant cousins, & learned not to read comments if I want to keep my blood pressure okay. On Facebook you can check out any time you like..but you can never leave! πŸ˜‰

  4. Thanks, Tom for posting.

  5. I have a FB account but I am never on FB to the consternation of a few friends that use it religiously.  I have been invited to sign up on Twitter and Reddit but I refuse.  I signed up on LinkedIn only because my naturopath at the time was going to publish stuff there.  I’ve never been back on.  I am not much for social media — I guess I am not so social!

Here is another story from CNN about the Facebook/Russia debacle.  In it, CNN talks with Sen Mark Warner – D Virginia who has indicated that the $100K buy in ads on FB from Russian internet trolls may be much, much more.  He also mentioned that prior to their election, the French government identified over 50,000 accounts from Russian trolls trying to influence their election.

  6. In between flights neither the time to comment much nor watch videos, but from the little I’ve picked up on the news and from your comment, TomCat, this doesn’t come as a big surprise. I’ve never joined Facebook because I felt it was all about money right from the start, and the way Facebook scrupulously abused privacy to make more money only made that more clear. Facebook now having sold ad space to Russian trolls just fits the pattern.

Yes, by all means boycott Facebook and hit it where its hurts the most: their bank accounts in some tax haven.

  7. Have always disliked FB and now I know why….Care2 falling into that category if things don’t get fixed soon.  Since I can’t comment on the site, stars to everyone,  and special hugs to you, TC, for keeping on keeping on!
