Hard as this is to believe Republican Border Control and ICE Officers have diverted resources from saving storm victims to capturing undocumented workers.  As a result, many have not taken shelter for fear that they will be deported.  This even been a problem in sanctuary cities, liker Houston, because Republican’s passes a law that outlaws sanctuary cities in Texas.  It was due to go into effect tomorrow, but a Federal Judge granted a reprieve.

A federal judge in San Antonio on Wednesday blocked Texas from enforcing its ban on so-called sanctuary cities, questioning the constitutionality of a law that has pitted Republican state leaders against several Democratic-leaning cities.

The judge’s ruling was only temporary, and prevents the law from taking effect on Friday while a suit against it goes forward. But the decision, which Texas said it would appeal, served as a legal blow to one of the toughest state-issued immigration laws in the country and puts the brakes on a measure backed by the Trump administration that critics had called anti-Latino. The law has become so divisive that it served as the backdrop of a shoving match at the Texas Capitol between Hispanic Democratic lawmakers and their white Republican colleagues.

The law, known as Senate Bill 4 or S.B. 4, prohibits cities and counties from adopting policies that limit immigration enforcement, allows police officers to question the immigration status of anyone they detain or arrest and threatens officials who violate the law with fines, jail time and removal from office. It also directs local officials to cooperate with so-called immigration detainer requests, which allow foreign-born detainees to be transferred to federal custody after they are released from state or local custody.

A number of the state’s biggest cities, including Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas, all of which are run by Democrats, joined a lawsuit against Texas seeking to strike down the law, which was passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature and signed by the Republican governor, Greg Abbott, in May… [emphasis added]

From <NY Times>

Rachel Maddow reported the story.

Who would have ever thought that Rachel is capable of a short segment!!

Kudos to Judge Orlando Garcia!  I fully support the lawsuit by the Democratic Mayors to defend against Republican "small government" intrusion into their local governance.

Remember, Republicans oppose immigration reform for three reasons only.  They are bigots.  They fear the political power of more naturalized Latinos.  Most important, Republican businesspeople can exploit undocumented workers, because they fear deportation for reporting the abuse.

RESIST THE REPUBLICAN REICH!!

  1. Rachel – Rachel’s segments are ALWAYS just the right length.  Hey – did you see that swan?  It was used to get a midwife to an expectant mother later that day!  She (the midwife) had been wondering how she was going to get there without damaging her gear (herself, she could walk, it was about waist high, but she was never trained to carry that much stuff on her head LOL).  She ran into the swan and arranged to borrow it.  the baby has now been born and mother and baby are doing well.

“White supremacists” behavior clearly demonstrates they do not think they are superior.  On the contrary, they know themselves inferior and are terrified.

  2. Love Rachel! So glad that Judge Garcia stopped SB4 from going into effect. WTG, Judge Garcia!!!
I had heard about this during the storm, about some of the folks who were flooded, and homeless refusing to go to the centers. What kind of sane person does this to another human being? Oh….that’s right, repugs. I believe that Latino’s will stand up to this hate and bigotry, and fight for their rights. They deserve to be here, as much as I am. I’m with them, and hope that SB4 withers and dies.

  3. I hope SB4, withers and dies a horrid, but fast death!
Joanne, I have a distinct feeling that you are right about the supremacists! But then there is always the Dunning-Kruger effect to consider.

  4. I hope this horrible law is overturned!

  5. Haven’t there been Tweets coming from the White House throne yet that Judge Gracia isn’t a real but a Mexican judge? Because I can’t imagine Drumpf showing much restraint after he heard this judge granted a reprieve. How dare he do this and show such humanity at this particular time! Oh well, back to the drawing board and have Border Control and ICE officers pick up all the more illegal immigrants drowning in cities that haven’t declared themselves sanctuary cities.

And I hope we do not see a disgusting backwash of this soon: Republicans refusing to send federal money to rebuild to Houston, or any other sanctuary city hit by Harvey, unless they renounce that status and turn any illegals over to ICE to “process”. ‘Because the taxpayer’s money to rebuild is not going to be wasted on harboring illegals.’ Do I really think it’ll come to that? 47

  6. I wonder how long it will take Drumpf to sound off about Garcia’s decision especially since this is Texas where he wants to build his border wall.  After all, it did not take Drumpf very long to lambaste Judge Curiel in the Trump University fiasco.

I surely hope that Garcia’s decision stands permanently!

  7. Thanks and hugs to all. 29

If Trump has reacted to it, I have heard nothing so far.  Either he is too tied up with the investigation or the media is.
