I’m on a secured public network, but my access is very slow. Yesterday there was a surge that fried my cable modem, and I’d have no Internet access at all, except that my tower has a separate Wi-Fi antenna. Comcast is coming to replace it, between 10 and Noon, after which I will have to get all my other devices working with it. I slept poorly and was already very busy, so this is today’s only article.

Today’s took me 3:50 (average 4:56). To do it, click here. How did you do?
Short Take:
From NY Times: Tropical Storm Harvey strengthened into a hurricane on Thursday as it headed to coastal Texas, where it was expected to bring life-threatening flooding, meteorologists said.
The National Hurricane Center said that Air Force hurricane hunter planes had spotted Tropical Storm Harvey strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico, with about 60-mile-per-hour winds more than 300 miles off the southern coast of Texas early Thursday. A hurricane warning, meaning hurricane conditions are expected, had been in effect from Port Mansfield in far southern Texas to Matagorda, about 100 miles southwest of Houston.
But later in the day, the planes spotted the system strengthening, and the estimated maximum sustained winds increased to close to 100 m.p.h. the hurricane center said early Friday. It was expected to make landfall Friday night or early Saturday.
To all in the path of the storm, except Republicans, please take all necessary precautions to stay safe, and God bless you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Republicans, go play at the beach. You know all that science stuff is fake news, so the storm doesn’t really exist. RESIST!!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
5:17 I had a difficult night too, up every two hours to clean out my nose, and it shows. August has been like that (though this was the worst). I got so spoiled in July when it was better than it had been for years – but just for the month, apparently.
Daily Kos also has an updating article on the hurricane which may be more personal than the NY Times. And an article on what ICE is doing about the hurricane. (Because of course they are).

Cartoon – TC, I am not in competition with you on that bridge. The bridge I am selling is a different one – the one in this story –
I’m so sorry you feel poorly. It’s ironic that we had the same problem.
Those SF activists should consider a bombing run too.
Sorry to hear about your lack of sleep due to allergy problems (?), Joanne. I appreciated the “crappy” story you posted, though.
Thanks, Lona. Yes, mine is allergies.
It’s hard for me to fathom how those people would choose San Francisco as a place to hold a “rally”. The MOST Liberal city in the US!
Glad you got back online so fast!
They are specifically targeting all the most liberal left coast cities – San Francisco, Berkeley, Portland, Seattle. Clearly they are looking to incite violence. But apparently they chickened out of San Francisco. Berkeley is still on for tomorrow, however – maybe.
Back online and totally pooped! Hugs!
I take it that means your modem is replaced and all is working again.
Let us know what type of surge protector you were using (you were using one, weren’t you?) – so we can avoid that brand.
It does.
I forget. It’s a top brand, it’s in a place where I can’t get, and I’ve had it for years. I suspect that the modem failing may have been what caused the surge that tripped the circuit breaker. However, Wendy will replace it when the Cutler-Hammer I just ordered arrives.
Maybe the Good Lord has me here for a reason, (TX)., but after the fire(s) last week, and now in a Category 3. Hurricane,….I’m prayin’…As we used to say in the Navy, ‘we’re battening down the hatches’, (making things secure).

Got my sandbags this morning, and helped my neighbor next door, with his.
WOW, busy day, get some rest too. Take care, and Thanks, Tom.
*Joanne: Loved your link, how awesome is this?
Thanks, Pat – I am so proud of my birthplace. There is some disagreement as to whether it constitutes assault – I say no, but you can bet they will try to make it into that.
Also, good news from the ACLU – a stroke of genius. For many years they have often taken heat for defending ALL free speech. Now they are through with at least one kind of heat! They will no longer defend anyone who mixes “free speech” with guns.
Whatever part of Texas you are in, BE SAFE! And evacuate if that’s what they recommend.
Stay safe, Pat!
It’s mid morning here and all news channels are giving constant updates on Harvey which has upgraded itself to a category 4 by now. Queenslanders know all about that category after a typhoon of that strength hit them in the beginning of the year. My thoughts are with all the people in Texas. I hope Harvey is going down in strength again before it hits the coast.
Sorry about your trouble with sleeping and your internet connection, TomCat. Use your time wisely and take it easy, if that is possible in any way.
Puzzle — 3:53 Tea anyone?
NY Times — I just checked CNN online and Harvey came ashore at Corpus Christi as a category 4 hurricane. The winds are extremely strong and people who did not evacuate earlier are being told to hunker down and not try to make a run for higher ground. Based on what I could see, anybody who tries to make a run north by vehicle will be blown right off the road. There are reports of a phenomenal amount of rain expected, so between storm surges and rain, there will a lot of flooding.
Pat B, Ted W, Terrie W and any other friends in Texas, please take care. The kids and I are thinking about you and just said kitty prayers for you all and the animals caught up in the storm.
Cartoon — The only bridge I’ll consider buying is a bridge that leads to peace!
Resist, Persist and Remove!!!
Silence is Consent!!!
Thanks all. Running out of gas here.
Yeah, you can’t sell the Brooklyn Bridge, thane is mine! (lol)
I’m in N.J., but felt some impact from Harvey…a cousin, land her husband, living in Austin, not far from Pat, it turns out, took a flight east yesterday, a day early, to be sure to get off the ground, and we all had some nice face time together, before they took their connecting flight out of Newark airport, today.
