Here in Portland it reached 91° yesterday.  96° is forecast for today.  Even with AC, it’s oppressive, and I’m spending as much time as I can at rest.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:32 (average 4:42).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (GQ Channel): What if Trump Actually Fires Mueller? | The Resistance with Keith Olbermann

If average US citizens spent half as much time every day making themselves politically aware, as they do sitting on the toilet, the US would be a shining example of progressive governance. RESIST!!

From The Last Word: Paul Ryan’s challenger: Ryan not listening, Trump untrustworthy

Wisconsin ironworker Randy Bryce will challenge Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan for re-election in 2018. If Bryce wins, it would be the third time since 1862 that a Speaker of the House has lost re-election. Lawrence O’Donnell talks to Randy Bryce

Kudos to Randy Bryce. I’m not holding my breath, but I’d love it, if Bryce dumped Lyin’ Ryan.  RESIST!!

From NY Times: Senator Dean Heller of Nevada, perhaps the most vulnerable Republican facing re-election in 2018, said Friday that he would not support the Senate health care overhaul as written, dealing a serious blow to his party’s attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act just days before a showdown vote.

Using remarkably harsh language, Mr. Heller, who is seen as a pivotal swing vote, denounced the Senate-drafted bill in terms that Democrats swiftly seized on. He said the measure would deprive millions of health care and do nothing to lower insurance premiums.

“I cannot support a piece of legislation that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans,” he said at a news conference in Las Vegas, standing next to Nevada’s Republican governor, Brian Sandoval, who accepted federal funding under the Affordable Care Act to expand Medicaid.

Heller, knows his career is over, if he votes for it, but he’s just one. Counting on Cruz, Paul, and Lee to oppose it would be crazy.  We need three Republicans to reject it or it will pass. RESIST!!

  1. 3:17  oh, hon, you don’t want to be eating this.  Thy something else in the same family, like a nice potato, tomato, or eggplant.

Keith #89 – It may not destroy him, but it can’t possibly help him.  True that.  But – a big difference between then and now – the people who are in league with Dolt.45 are actively working on killing as many of us as possible as fast as possible.  Well, that may have been true then too, although certainly not as obvious.  But now it is obvious, and they hold all three branches of the Federal government.

TLW – Thank you for featuring this.  I’m not holding my breath for this either, but he does have the AFL.CIO behind him, and it is Wisconsin.  And, I realize this is different, but there was also Eric Cantor.  Yeah, being speaker is powerful, but not invincible.

NYT – Heller is eally the only person in opposition right now for the right reasons.  Because Cruz, Paul, and Lee are agin’ it for the wrong reasons, they will almost certainly cave.  Heller may not.  Susan Collins is making a few noises, I hear, but even if she were a definite “no,” she and Heller are only two, and we need three.

Cartoon – There was more going on with Henry VIII than simply women’s rights, but most of it was also highly Republican.

  2. Keith: I guess I’m one of the weird ones, in regard to politics and Nixon: I followed the Watergate situation daily, via the NY Times.  A friend at work, Beverly Davis, and I would sit and read, and joke, somewhat like we do now about Rumpy, at the shenanigans going on in Washington.  Just as I am in favor of NOT taking away Idiot’s Twitter account, I almost wish he would fire Mueller, for the very reasons Keith refers to.
Last Word: Anyone who can oust Ryan, who might just become really vulnerable s the time goes by, is MY man (or woman)!
    NYT: Watching and waiting!!!!!

    • I’m w/ you – do NOT take away Twitler’s Tweeter!  It’s a gift that keeps on giving – especially from a legal aspect.

I have similar feelings WRT Mueller, because as Rep. Adam Schiff said, Congress would turn right around and appoint him as Independent Counsel.

      • I sure wish I had Adam Schiff’s confidence that this would happen!  Those people are REPUBLICANS, dammit.  The only thing for which they can be depended upon is coming up with new evils.

  3. KO: Very informative, and hope the investigation(s) continue. Yes, Resist!!

TLW: Love this guy! I’m all for Bryce! Working people want to be heard.

NYT: I doubt Cruz will stay the course, and will buckle eventually. Kudos to Heller though.

    Cartoon: Ugh!!
It’s a balmy 80 here, with rain coming for the next couple days. We need it. Hope that you stay cool, and rested. Enjoy your evening, take care, and Thanks, Tom.

  4. Puzzle — 3:31 Pretty posy.

YouTube — “If average US citizens spent half as much time every day making themselves politically aware, as they do sitting on the toilet, the US would be a shining example of progressive governance.”— I agree.  I started coming to PP in August 2011 in hopes that by looking at US politics, I could gain understanding of Canadian politics, specifically how our Harper and his Harlots were operating.  The structures are different but the politics are similar.  I put a fair amount of time into it but my knowledge and understanding were greatly increased.  With just a modicum of effort, the average American can gain knowledge and understanding too.  If people don’t participate, they can’t complain.  And the all or nothing attitude does not work either.  It only breeds extremes.

The Last Word — More power to Randy Bryce.  Given how Lyin’ Ryan is at the head of the line to repeal Obamacare and to strip away the social safety net, it is amazing that his constituents have put up with him this long.

NY Times — I read a blurb this afternoon about Drumpf calling Senators who said they would not support the proposed healthcare bill.  Apparently, there are at least 5.  For all of your sakes, I hope there are 5 Republicans who will stand up to this bully.

Cartoon — As I recall, Henry was dissatisfied with his wives who failed to bear him a son until finally his third wife, Jane Seymour, did the honours.  It seems that Henry was a Republican in that he did not believe the science of conception.

    Resist and Persist!!!

We apparently had high temp at 32 C (90 F) today and 28% humidity.  There was also a steady breeze at 4 km/hr.  Tomorrow will be hot too which means that the church will be stifling.  I hope it is a short sermon.  I stayed in all day and did not notice the heat which is unusual.  Tomorrow is a different matter.  I hope it cools down a bit for you.

  5. Keith Olbermann: It is much harder to reach this tipping point where more people, unaware of it before, suddenly become aware of Drumpf’s impeachable behavior then it was in Nixon’s time. Many Americans are not only dumbed down politically and intellectually over the past decades, they are also numbed down by the sheer number and rate of lies, U-turns, madness and hubris coming at them through tweets, speeches and rallies and all possible forms of news coverage. A very potent combination of analgesia to keep the average US citizen from waking up and see the smoke billowing out of the White House. And with the Republican firemen looting the Oval office while telling the public they’ve got it all under control, they doze off again until Drumpf obstructs justice in yet another way.

TLW: Lawrence O’Donnell is right in saying that it’s not impossible to beat the Speaker of the House in his own district, and certainly not when this Speaker is Lyin’ Ryan, I might add, but it might take several campaigns to do so. So I wish Randy Bryce the best of luck, but the chances that he’ll beat Ryan, despite all his straightforwardness an honesty, are still rather slim at this point in time. But it’s a very good start and America could do with a lot more candidates of Bryce’s caliber.

NYT: On the 23rd there were 5 GOP senators opposed to the bill, sadly three of them, Cruz, Lee and Paul are the most conservative Republicans in the senate and oppose it for all the wrong reasons; it just isn’t cruel enough for them. There were also 4 GOP senators that had expressed concerns with it, three of them the least conservatives in the senate and all three of those women. But the situation was very similar in the House when their health care bill was put to the vote and we all know in the end they went along like the good sheep they are. So when they do so again, it will be no surprise and therefore not a disappointment.
But it will be a disaster for America! 18

  6. Thanks all.  Hot Hugs!  And AMEN!!
