The worst part of the heat wave is over, but it’s still very muggy, and it will take a couple of days fore the heat to bleed out of the brickwork.  Tomorrow, please expect no more than a Personal Update.  I have a follow up with my Ocular Oncologist, and when I return, Wendy will come over.  She isn’t here today, because she took her mother to the beach for the weekend.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:54 (average 4:32).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From NY Times: Donald J. Trump belittled the parents of a slain Muslim soldier who had strongly denounced Mr. Trump during the Democratic National Convention, saying that the soldier’s father had delivered the entire speech because his mother was not “allowed” to speak.

Mr. Trump’s comments, in an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News that will air on Sunday, drew quick and widespread condemnation and amplified calls for Republican leaders to distance themselves from their presidential nominee. With his implication that the soldier’s mother had not spoken because of female subservience expected in some traditional strains of Islam, his comments also inflamed his hostilities with American Muslims.

Khizr Khan, the soldier’s father, lashed out at Mr. Trump in an interview on Saturday, saying his wife had not spoken at the convention because it was too painful for her to talk about her son’s death.

Only one adjective is sufficiently vile to categorize Rump Dump Trump’s bigotry: Republican.

From YouTube: Real Time with Bill Maher: New Rule – The Notorious HRC (HBO)

LMAO! To the Regressives, who will try to use this as proof, and the idealists taken in by and parroting them, Bill was using SATIRE! Winking smile

Also from YouTube: Real Time with Bill Maher: Interview with Bernie Sanders

In this segment Bill was serious. Bernie made his position clear. "Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate in the modern history of our country and he must be defeated." "The political revolution must continue the DAY AFTER THE ELECTION, and Hillary Clinton is President." Not only was his support for Hillary unequivocal, but also, made electing her a priority over his own revolution until after the election. Bernie made the only way forward for Bernie supporters clear. Those who claim to support Bernie, but help Trump instead, even unwittingly, do not support Bernie.

"The regressive left… leap(s) whenever any (not merely their own) liberal democratic government commits a policy error, while generally ignoring almost every fascist, theocratic or Muslim-led dictatorial regime and group in the world.

    —Maajid Nawaz[1]

The regressive left is a term coined by anti-Islamist activist Maajid Nawaz to describe a perceived segment of the left which ignores certain reactionary attitudes in the name of tolerance. Nawaz originally used it to refer to misguided leftist tolerance of conservative and fundamentalist Islam (underbelly and all) in contrast to their progressive stance against the scourge of conservative and fundamentalist Christianity, but the term has since been extended to encompass many (but curiously not all) leftist positions that appear contradictory to progressive values.

While the term originates from within the left, with progressives challenging regressives to stand up for their alleged leftist values in all matters, thus implying an internal criticism (the argument being that regressives are not consistently liberal), the term has also been picked up from the outside and has been used by conservatives (and others) as a snarl word directed at any leftist positions they don't happen to like like, similar to the snarl usage of the term "social justice warrior". As is to be expected, rival camps revel in the infighting of their opponents."

It looks like TC uses it to snarl at those who disagree with him…

As Bernie has said umpteen times, he is the servant leader of the movement, which is not hierarchical like a dictatorship or fascist leader.  Consistently ignoring that aspect and telling people who voted for him to treat him as if he is a totalitarian leader now is really mind boggling with the rational disconnect of the position.

    • For months now Reich and other Bernie supporters have made it clear that it is up to Clinton to earn the support of Bernie's supporters.  She and the DNC had a chance at the convention and made it clear she had no intention of doing so as she choreographed her day at the convention to go more conservative to give Republications the convention they didn't have and focus on winning their support, which is diametrically opposed to winning progressive voters' support.  Bernie is keeping his promise even though he knows they are wrong to pretend his voice should suffice.

    • For months now Reich and many other Bernie supporters have made it clear that it is up to Clinton to earn the support of Bernie's supporters (I have seen emphasis that he so advised her, too).

Those that believe his supporters should support her should be pressuring her to earn our support (although I have no expectation my vote will get counted any more than it was in the primary unless we get international election monitors with some clout).

    • JL Accusing me of snarling is another personal attack.  You have already been warned once.  If you do it again, you will be banned from the site.

    • I'm a little late to the party here, but I finally found this quote from C. S. Lewis:

We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man. There is nothing progressive about being pig-headed and refusing to admit a mistake.

As I said on an earlier post, if Hillary wants to "regress" back to FDR and Glass-Steagal, bring it on.  It doesn't take into consideration all the technical innovations, nor climate change, but it's a start.

    • ISLAM AND THE FUTURE OF TOLERANCE, A Dialogue- Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz!!!! One good book!

  3. NYT: Thumplethinskin never made a sacrifice ever!!!!  in his pampered life! What very, very disrespectful comments to say about  Capt. Humayun Khan and to his parents. It was and is, a very moving speech.

YT1 & 2: Love Bill, great video! LMAO!! 2. Beloved Bernie Sanders. He is, and always has been. I feel his words.

    Cartoon: LOL.

Best to you tomorrow, as you go to your Oncologist and for your day in general. It's always hot here, it seems, until November or so, and the rain we have had is a great relief. Enjoy the rest of your day and evening, take care, and Thanks, Tom.

  4. 4:46  It's a long way from this to seeing an actual tuna.

NY Times – Is that the same interview that was on with Lawrence O'Donnell?  When she spoke, obviously cvhoked up?  The Khans truly are the best that America has.  Drumpf – isn't.

YouTube – Wonderful laugh IMO.  The Notorious HRC?  Well, it's working for RBG.  Bill makes it VERY funny.  And – almost attractive – which is scary!

YouTube II – Beloved.  He is indeed.  And his deep commitment to what is best for America is certainly one reason why.  (Although with the number of people areound who seem to think Obama hates America [maybe because he's black?] or even that Hillary hates America [maybe because ahe's a woman?  It's beginning to sound like America is restricted to white males – not that I have ever seen any sign of hate for white males in Hillary OR Obama] – maybe they can't see Bernie's patriotism either.)

    Cartoon – Oh.  My goodness.

  5. Farewell all who are not on Care2.  Disagreement with the evidence to support it is not welcome here and I do not welcome the consistent attacks in the posts themselves against all who disagree.

    • JL, you are wrong.  TC does not stifle disagreement.  I have seen a number of times when others disagree. Rather he points out where he disagrees with someone and why.  Your arguments are getting tired and do nothing to ensure Trump does not take the WH.

    • I'm sorry to see you go, but given your present mindset, I think it's best.

    • Thanks all.  Hugs!!

  6. Good luck tomorrow!

NY Times:  Mr. Khan was on almost all the Sunday morning talk shows and he showed such class and dignity in rebutting Trump that he deserves a medal.  He called on McConnell and Ryan to repudiate him, lets see if they have the nerve to do so.

Youtube:  Stillhaving trouble with sound, hate Windows 10, so I could not hear the videos.

    Cartoon:  Yep

  7. Puzzle — 3:16  My boat sprung a leak!

NY Times — The CBC ran a story as well:

"I think I've made a lot of sacrifices," Trump told ABC News in excerpts of an interview posted on Saturday. "I work very, very hard."

Drumpf is too much the narcissist and egomaniac to understand the true meaning of Khan's words.

Youtube — I wonder how long before some Republican idiot tries to use parts of Bill's monologue as evidence that Hillary is crooked?  He is funny!

Youtube 2 — It beggars disbelief why some of Bernie's supporters cannot understand his point.  He stated it very well and clearly.  He has not given up his positions.

Cartoon — Congress, at least the Republican caucus, has gone to the dogs!

  8. Let's hope the weather remains cooler for the rest of the summer, TomCat. If it's as erratic as it is over here, there's no telling what it'll do, though. For now, enjoy the lower temperatures when the building cools down and have a safe trip to the ocular oncologist tomorrow.

NYT: Drumpf's smutty insinuations made our late national news too yesterday evening, with clips of Mr Kahn's impassioned and moving speech and of Drumpf mouthing him off. It was brought under the caption of Drumpf's next completely inappropriate response which has also angered members of his own party.
We're in for three more months of increasingly sharp attacks on this thin-skinned megalomaniac who'll respond with increasingly vile, personal and beside the point attacks because he simply can't help himself in an interview or when making a speech without teleprompter. Soon we'll only hear his voice echoing from the deep pit he's dug himself into.

YouTube-1: ROTFLMAO with Bill Maher. Republicans had this coming and he did a magnificent job for HRC. Excellent piece of satire, Bill, and turning "notorious HRC" into a honorary nickname Hillary will be proud to wear. 😉 You gave Republicans a cookie of their own dough, as we say.

YouTube-2: Bernie Sanders, the master himself, has done what needed to be done, will continue to do what needs to be done and has explained the why and where-to better than anyone else possibly could. If disgruntled Bernie supporters will not listen to him, they are not going to listen to anyone. They just won't listen, period.

    Cartoon: Break the chain!

  9. NYT: Rump can not put two thoughts together in a rational manner. He told a reporter that "I've made sacrifices,. I've created thousands of jobs." Can someone tell me how that is not an oxymoron, from the flaming orange moron!

U-Tube: Maher is in rare form, with his Hillary piece!! I'll check out the Bernie piece tomorrow.

'Toon: Is this congress s a whole, or the GOPigs screwing themselves to death?
